Remember the name Tiahiti Colombani. The Tahiti U-16 Men’s captain has lit up the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship in Papeete with some brilliant individual performances.

Technically gifted Colombani, whose grandfather Roland is a former Tahiti international, is one of the brightest young talents in Oceania. And he’s has just signed a contract with French Ligue 1 side AJ Auxerre after spending last season at Ligue 2 side ASM Belfort.

Age difference aside (U-19's 🇸🇧 v U-17's 🇦🇺) that is still an excellent result for the Solomons.

NC maybe the best chance to push the AWs in WC qualifying. Won last December's Pacific Games in Honiara - on pens over hosts the Solomons. And have a few players based in France??

Missed the recent Nations Cup due to the violence there, so we didn't get a look at them.

But still overall the AWs, should coast through qualifying. Especially with the semis & final to be in NZ. If a weakened AWs can win the Nations Cup easily in Vanuatu, really it's a battle for that 2nd spot (and the WC qualifying repecharge tourney) for the Island teams.

Australia U-17's won their second match with the Solomons 4-1.

Played their final match of the tour today against Vanuatu U-19's where it finished 3-3. Aussie blowing a 2-0 H/T advantage.

Another pretty credible result for an OFC nation though.

Expect more of these sort of tours. Brief mention on SBS here in Oz, that FA is investing (might be some corporate cash or Aus Aid as well) about $4M into a closer football relationship with the OFC countries.

Could very well be politically motivated as China continues to push into our back door yard. Kiribati's leader currently in Bejing this week being charmed.

Good job. Wonder if Harmon will ever pay the fines. CAS are based in Lausanne, Switzerland

https://www.oceaniafootball.com/court-of-arbitration-of-sport-cas-dismisses-appeal-brought-by-lee-harmon-former-president-of-the-cook-islands-football-association-cifa-against-ofc-appeal-committee-decision/

On 21 August 2024 the Court of Arbitration of Sport dismissed an appeal brought by Lee Harmon against a decision issued by the OFC Appeal Committee on 21 May 2024.

The OFC Appeal Committee found Mr Harmon had breached the OFC Code of Ethics on three occasions, namely breaches of Articles 13 (General rules of conduct), 15 (Loyalty), 20 (Offering and accepting gifts and other benefits), and 21 (bribery and corruption).

Following the governance reform undertaken by OFC in 2018, the OFC Judicial bodies (Disciplinary and Ethics Committee and Appeal Committee) have been responsible for investigating and deciding on breaches of the OFC Code of Ethics. The bodies are composed of legally qualified independent members.

(Photo Credit OFC Media via Phototek)

In light of the above findings, on 21 May 2024 the OFC Appeal Committee issued a decision imposing the following sanctions:

Mr Harmon is banned for 5 years from taking part in any kind of football related activity at the national, regional, and international level (administrative, sports or any other) for the period of the ban commencing 23 August 2021; and

fined the sum of NZ$50,000.00 payable to the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC).

Furthermore, Mr Harmon shall pay to OFC the costs and expenses of the OFC investigation and adjudicatory proceedings in the sum of NZ$40,910.16 as well as costs incurred for the appeal proceedings in the sum of NZ$17,000.

The ban on Mr Harmon shall continue to apply past its date of expiry until the above fine and the costs are paid in full to OFC.

As a result of the above mentioned decision, FIFA have extended the ban imposed on Mr Harmon to have effect worldwide across all football-related activities. This ban will remain in place for the period imposed by the OFC Appeal Committee and continue to apply until the fine and costs are paid in full.

Following the dismissal of Mr Harmon’s appeal by CAS, the above OFC Appeal Committee decision is considered final and binding.

Oh, didn't realise it was streamed on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ygPeFqoWY0

Watched in the last couple of hours at work. Vanuatu did well to hold them out to almost H/T.

Aussie very dominant overall, but we're lacking a cutting edge, they also looked relatively uncomfortable on a typically bumpy/bouncy uneven Pacific island football field. Welcome back to the OFC lads!

For what it's worth, Vanuatu carved out some very decent chances for themselves. They were lucky to not at least have picked up a goal for their efforts - Worked some very nice 1 v 1 efforts which they should have capitalized on to be fair.

Everyone's favourite from the OFC Nations Cup Johnathan Spokeyjack was lively and threatening - think it was him that created a gilt-edged chance for his side completely against the run of play after 20 minutes which was blazed wide. He had a couple of other half chances as well. Godine Tenene I thought was excellent for Vanuatu. Lightning quick that lad - liked his tenacity and his quick feet, happy to take on players too which was good to see from an OFC player against higher quality opposition. Was heartening to see him get stuck in and press the Aussie defenders too. Just a shame they couldn't quite press as a unit more effectively, as they hemmed them in a few times only to have one player not quite pressing with as much intensity given them an easy out.

Good prep for for WC Qualifying for them though.

Also see Fiji beat the Solomon Islands 1-0 a couple of days ago - No Krishna, late penalty to seal the victory.

And earlier today Hong Kong beat the Solomons 3-0 in Fiji.

Fiji take on Hong Kong in a few days time in that Tri-Nations matchup to round out their September international window.

Half Chinese/half Kiwi, Matt Orr (NZ dad) with one of Hong Kong's goals in their 3-0 win over the Solomons in Fiji. That's him in the photo above and below.

Orr also the captain. He's actually playing in the Chinese Super League (CSL) this season. Previously he'd just played China 2nd tier or his local HK league.

No starts for his CSL club Shenzhen Peng City but 16 appearances off the bench and 1 goal.  Sort of guy that would definitely have been AWs capped by Anthony Hudson if eligible. And the CSL ain't the worst level, so even now he'd be in AWs contention - given no Kiwi striker apart from Wood is scoring goals. He had a breakout 15 goal season in the Chinese 2nd tier last year.

Surprised Hong Kong are ranked as low as 159. They qualified for the Asian Cup earlier this year and didn't disgrace themselves.

Solomons had Le'ai and also a recalled Micah Lea'alafa playing.

Surprised no one's picked up on the OFC 1st Round World Cup Qualifiers which kicked off today.

Winner of the final on Tuesday will join New Zealand, Vanuatu & Tahiti in Group B for the 2nd round of qualifiers kicking off in the October window.

Hard luck for both the Cook Islands & American Samoa - It's one and done for them for their 2026 World Cup Qualifying campaign.

Hong Kong drew 1-1 with Fiji in Suva, to complete the 3 nations tourney with the Solomons.

Tonga are half an hour away from progressing to the 2nd Round of OFC World Cup Qualifying!

Currently 1-0 up against favourites Samoa in Apia.

Curiously, if they do hold on, they'll go on to face New Zealand for the first time ever in November, as part of said 2nd round.

OFC going global baby!
Absolute madness of an idea though. Hawaii!?! That must be a 12 hour flight from Australia's east coast, given it's about 9 from AKL.

Good luck to whoever is putting this competition together. 🤯
03 Dec 08:38 · edited 03 Dec 10:21 · History
Well there is no MLS or even USL team in Hawaii. And it's a far wealthier place than most islands in the wider Pacific. There is also a pretty strong relationship between Taihiti and Hawaii I understand, about 5-6 hours apart by plane.

But the more I think about it, NZ is better to stay out of this comp. Was an interesting read after the OFC Nations Cup, about how groundskeepers in the Islands struggle to grow ryegrass species that you typically need to have in a football pitch to have it as a true smooth surface. The local native tropical grasses just naturally take over. That means bumpy pitches and shark football.

I reckon best NZ focuses on getting a 3rd A League club, and spending some of that FIFA WC 2026 qualification millions on improving the national leagues, academies and other pathways.

Seems any Australian participation in this league, is almost being driven by the Aus Govt with 'Football as Diplomacy' to counter the evil CCP doing their cunning stuff in the region. Who knows maybe any Hawaiian entry will be run by the CIA!

04 Dec 18:26
I really struggle to see the point of this for New Zealand (and Australian / Hawaii) sides.
The current National Leagues continue . So a professional NZ side would not be eligible ?
The Oceania Champions League continues in its current format so no entry to CWC through this competition.
why would an Australian team enter in preference to the NSD and longer term entry to the A League.
If Hawaii can justify a professional side then MLS/USL would be their option. They did have a team in the old NASL at some stage (think it was called Team Hawaii).
Can see some benefits to the Pacific Islands but not sure whether they outweigh the financial costs.
Seems a crazy idea but Oceania maybe desparate to spend some of FIFA's gold.
Would be interested in hearing NZ Footballs view and how it would work here and whether they in fact support it..
05 Dec 03:16 · edited 05 Dec 05:45 · History
Can see the league being really good for the Island nations.
Be great for young kids, and players there to have a local professional pathway. Academies setup around each club, all helping to raise standards. You listen to Brian Kaltak talk and realise just how tough it is for talented kids there, to get any sort of opportunity to play overseas. Sounds like in Vanuatu as an example they are excited about the prospect of taking part. That's cool for their community.

If FIFA with cash reserves of over $US4 billion, are there to underwrite the whole thing as well, and make sure it survives, even better.

NZF as a member of OFC, should definitely support it getting started. But that doesn't mean we need to be part of it, as we are very much a country levels above the rest in Oceania. That's the blunt truth. Having a team(s) in the league would really be of minimal development value, in NZF's pathways.

Any Australian (and maybe US/Hawaiian) involvement is definitely being driven from Canberra as part of a geopolitical regional focus. The FA with Aus Govt backing, has just started sending age group teams to play in the Islands as part of that.

This is what we should be doing but if it also means more games for our pro players then that too has to be a good thing for the international game.

Queenslander 3x a year.

Hawaii because OFC grandees, plus others stumping up cash wanna go there?
Interesting idea, but the logistics haven’t changed any.

The Football in Oceania podcast started up again last month. I used to listen to it like 4-5 years ago and never had the heart to unsubscribe from it even though they went silent for a long, long time.
Well, it was worth the wait. Available on Spotify or wherever you get your podcast fix usually...

Papua New Guinea and Samoa have completed their passage to the semi-finals of the OFC Women’s Nations Cup in Fiji.

PNG secured their spot in the tournament’s last four with an emphatic 8-0 win against the Cook Islands, while Samoa beat Tahiti 3-1.

Both teams will learn their semi-final opponents when Friday’s Group B games are completed.

PNG will meet the runners-up from Group B, while Samoa will face the winners of that group.
