Early thread as we don't even know the teams yet! But deserves a weeks banter.

Hoping for a Germany v Uruguay final with Uruguay winning. But think Germany v Holland with the Germans winning.

Still a week and a bit away but really excited for this! Don't know if I'll be able to watch yet but should work something out.

My final pick:

Germany 2 (Ozil 96', Klose 114')

Holland 0

Picked an Argentina v USA final pre-tournament, and and was right pleased with myself when the US topped Englandin the group to make it possible.

All gone downhill since then.

The romantic in me wants a new winner, so I'm tipping the Netherlands to beat whoever they face in the final.

Given the way I pick, I guess that translates as "Well done Germany"

germany v dutchies, best team vsersus easiest run in......Spain will not have enough to stop the Germans and Uruguay have played their final and were lucky to survive v Ghana.

Thinking about it and assuming Germany win the title, man they'd have had a tougher road then most.  Argentina, Spain, then the Netherlands/Uruguay. loyalgunner2010-07-05 16:09:44

I notice you didn't mention England in round 2

I'll be happy to see Netherlands win their first, or even a Uruguay win because it would be very funny to see how the commentators handle that scenario, especially if Luis Suarez scores the winner... but I'm most keen to see Germany win, based on the brilliance of their play so far,l and with the side-benefit the fact that NZ will be the only unbeaten team if Germany win. :)

What if they win the final in a penalty shootout?

Hampster, when the two teams have been decided for the final i might try jazz up the OP similar to my QF threads but with more detail and pictures. I can give you all the info if you wish.

Yeah that'd be excellent. Can't guarantee I'll be on so if I'm not maybe get a mod to edit it in to the first post or put it in your second post. Awesome.

Since I am half dutch. I am definitely backing them. It helps when I hate the Germans and don't particularly like the spanish

What are golden boot standings? I took Forlan for golden boot in a school sweepstake for cheap dollars, not looking so bad now. That is pretty much the reason I want Uruguay to go far and win!

Of the remaining teams.

Villa - 5

Sneijder, Muller, Klose - 4

Forlan, Suarez - 3

Three for me, and two for them.

If I'd mentioned them it would have undermined the entire point of my post which was the toughness of their road to the final.

I'm glad others picked up on the joke.

got him at 40/1 but despite having 2 matches to play I don't think he's got enough on the board. best result is to lose to Dutch then have him play 3/4 oplay off against demoralized and weakened Spanish so he gets 3 or 4

Things we've learned this morning: The Dutch have made their 3rd World Cup final. The World Cup trophy will remain in Europe. This means that Europe will win its 10th World Cup, breaking the tie with South America, which has won 9. This also means that we will have a first ever World Champion from Europe which achieved the feat at a tournament not held in Europe.

We also learned that if the Netherlands win the final they will be the first team since West Germany in 1990 to concede in more than one match in the knockout stages (thanks ZM).

We've now also learned we will have a first-time World Champion, for the first time since 1998. Spain or the Netherlands will become the eighth country to win the World Cup (Uruguay, Italy, Germany, Brazil, England, Argentina, and France being the other winners).

Only consolation as a German supporter is that I took Holland-Spain final at 23-1 before the tournament started.

And from the 'that's fairly interesting' file, Spain have the chance to be the 2nd Euro champions to go on an win the World Cup*. The first being Germany in 1974. Now, just who did they beat in the final?

*For the trainspotters, France also held both trophies in 2000, but did it in the other order.

I know, I know, its serious!

For what it is worth, I'm picking the Netherlands 2-1, but I'd prefer spain to win because of the whole New Zealand as the only team unbeaten thing. So many t-shirt, banner and pub quiz opportunities there.

Totally neutral but would like to see Netherlands win too.

The rational part of me (ooh err) says Spain.

I don't give a monkey's what the octopus chooses - it's bl##dy ruined this world cup.

I'd like the Netherlands to unpick Spain for sentimental reasons, they were in the first final I ever watched in 74.  But from this morning's performance Spain are tough nuts on the ball and the Dutch would have to pull them out of position to win.  Darn, I wanted a high scoring final but I reckon it'll be a low scoring dullfest.

The Netherlands have gone 25 games unbeaten. The last team to beat them were the Aussies 2-1 in Holland in 2008.
I think Spain, if they play to potential, will will easily.

And that is why i take exception with people saying the final will be a bore or a dullfest. Two teams both playing well who can still find another level (or possibly two), i think it will be a fascinating game.
