The Illustrious Third Place Playoff. Who cares?

Due to family lineage im usually a netherlands supporter at world cup time but they obviously became my number 2 team when nz qualified.

With NZ's performance, and if the netherlands can somehow manage to defy the spanish and win this thing, then this will be the best ever world cup i could've hoped for in my lifetime. Disclaimer: unless NZ manage to continually qualify and expectations rise - fingers crossed!

On that note, the only additional thing i needed to make sure this world cup wouldnt have anything sh*t about it would be to make sure it is not the lowest scoring world cup ever. By my calculations, with forlan's awesome goal to make it 2-1, this world cup has now officially avoided that accolade... ps what a game this is

It avoided it some time ago paul. The lowest scoring World Cup to date is Italia 90 where only a meagre 115 goals were scored across 52 games.

Three for me, and two for them.

sorry i should clarify, i meant lowest scoring as in goals per game - a total isnt really a fair reflection given the increases in team numbers that have occurred over the years

the lowest in that respect (also italia '90 funnily enough) was 2.21. There were only 52 games back then, there's 64 now. So we needed 142 goals in this world cup to exceed that average.

Forlan's goal was the 142nd.

so what does this mean for the golden boot - forlan and muller both now on 5 with villa, and sneijder with 4 the only contenders?

Great game.  Wish Forlan had equalized at the end so it'd go to 4-4 in extra-time with Germany winning on penalties.  Wasn't to be but thoroughly enjoyed it.  Forlan has to be one of the most awesome players to watch at this World Cup.  Would accept him at Arsenal (or the Phoenix) any day of the week.

Sorry, my friend. He is Atleti!

Player of the tournament? I thought that he had scored at the end. What a player. He shoots from anywhere, with either foot. He is fantastic. That goal was unreal, such an amzing volley.

Really proud for los uruguayos- who had a wonderful tournament and were living their dream. Took them to my heart.

Absolutely immense at this tournament. Without him that team doesn't go beyond the second round. If that far in fact.

An enjoyable game. It may be the game no one wants to play/see but there are usually plenty of goals.

Did Paul get this one right?
To answer my own question yes he did.

Still hoping Wenger will go and have a quiet word with his manager.  Tbh, if I had to pick a la Liga team it would be Atletico Madrid as they have Forlan, Reyes, and Simao plus a few others I can't think of off the top of my head.

Very much agree with EG, though, that Uruguay would have been very much toothless without Forlan and would most likely have failed.

Great game, shame Forlan could give the game half an hour more awesomeness with his free kick at the end. He's still player of the tournament for me!

Was Klose injured? If not, that is cold.
Loew showed it was a game that wasn't the be all and end all, by naming a number of second stringers in the starting XI. I know the team should come before the individual, but if there's ever a time for sentiment, it's the 3rd & 4th playoff.

In a match known for it's high-scoring tradition, if Klose had managed 1 goal, he would have:

- broken his tie with Gerd Mueller, and become Germany's highest ever World Cup scorer
- tied Ronaldo as the highest ever scorer at World Cups with 15 goals
- moved into a tie for the Golden Shoe at this World Cup with Forlan, Mueller, Sneijder, and Villa. Assuming that Sneijder and Villa failed to score in the final, and that there is no tie-breaker (least minutes played?), he could have become the first player in history to win two Golden Shoes.

If he'd scored 2 goals, he would have moved into the outright lead in the Golden Shoe, with only the final to be played, and become the highest-ever scorer at World Cups.

Very low, Loew.

This - it was stated before the game Klose wouldn't play due to a back injury. Podolski and Lahm (and Loew) with the flu.

Ah, knew someone had the flu. Had my wires slightly crossed there.

Cheers for that. FIFA didn't sell English commentary rights to Thailand due 'piracy' concerns (WTF?), so I've been watching the games with the volume fairly low, and not really paid much attention to the commentary.

I'll forgive Loew then
