Ballsy bringing on Krul.

Ballsy to not use a sub to bring on fresh legs at some point in the extra half an hour of play, just to have one available to switch keepers for a shootout if it happens.

Or, it might actually not just be ballsy, but also kinda dumb. If you brought on a fresh striker or mid you may well have won it without needing a penalty shootout.

Anyone else notice Krul warming up with the GK coach with the counting down and pointing one way and Krul having to react?

I saw that UG! Immediately clicked that he was going to bring him on for the shootout.

Tbf it's a gamble and it paid off big time. A moment that will be remembered for years to come as well i suspect.

Three for me, and two for them.

He put on Huntelaar to do exactly that.

I went back and had a look, and yeah, they didn't have any more strikers on the bench after Huntelaar. However they did have a couple of midfielders, De Guzman and Clasie, who could have come on for, say Wijnaldum, who was looking cooked by the end. Fair enough leaving on the experience of Van Persie, Robben, Sneijder and Kuyt though.

Edit: So I guess not so much dumb as very unusual and risky to not use all your subs on outfield players in 120 minutes of knockout football in hot and humid conditions.

As it came off he is a hero but perhaps might have been different had it not. Great to see the keeper being taken off with his arms around Krul as he was being subbed. Not sure I would have done that.

Would it be worth learning a few words of an opponent's language, in order to confuse them or ask for the ball when they weren't looking?

It seems that Tim Krul was actually telling the Colombian strikers "Yo sé a dónde va a patearlo".

When did he get the chance to speak to the Colombian strikers?
