This is why I dislike FIFA

Interesting. Of course I was generalising, about both players. I just find it hard to fathom quite how Maradona seems to cause such rage, you referred to him as a twat earlier, in people. Bizarre. Personally, I think Maradona is one of the finest footballers of his generation and his various indiscretions don't change that for me. Also, from a personal standpoint, I look rather less favourably on someone getting pissed and beating their missus up than having a rant at a press conference.

Also, your reply would suggest that you are somewhat sympathetic to Gascoigne's personal failings while not extending the same sympathy to Maradona's. The expulsion from the World Cup was a direct result of his personal failings.

As for Maradona's apparent animosity towards England and the English, as a Scot that only makes him more endearing to me!

I admire the ability that both players had, I'm not knocking either of them, or you for your opinion. As I said, just trying to get a handle on the fact that, in my experience, the mere mention of his name seems to have a very strange effect on some people, notably those from England.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I'm not sure where you are going with the getting pissed thing ( thought you were Scottish)

I guess you have to be English to relate to the Maradona thing. I was 12 at the time and living in England. It was one of those moments that transcended football- like you suddenly realised the world really wasn't a fair place.  You could argue that England didn't deserve to beat that Argentinian team anway ( and I can understand that argument) though the flipside is that such a great side shouldn't have had to resort to such tactics to win the game. Has it affected my objectivity concerning Maradona and Argentina- probably.

With regard to Gascoigne,I  lost a lot of respect for him as a person when I read about the physical abuse in his  autobiography, and I'm certainly not going to defend him or anybody for that kind of behaviour.

I think drawing comparisons between the two men is of limited value, really. Gascoigne has never been vaunted as one of the game's greats, and nor should he be. This does not lessen his failings as a man, but it does mitigate the damage he was capable of doing to the game. However, Maradona's  profile, and the status in which he is held by people such as your self, should demand that in his official capcity he operates with the highest degree of professionalism. I just don't see that from him.

You have to bear in mind that one of my footballing heroes is the man who holds the record for being sent off the most times in British senior football  (although, I hasten to add, that statistic is not the reason why he has my admiration!)

Is that who  Chic Charnely is then?

Anyway, despite my feeling towards Maradona/ Argentina - do I  want them to meet England next year? You bet your arse I do, preferably in the final ( i'm sure the thought of England in a final makes you laugh...me too). Such a great footballing rivalry, so much history  which is what makes the game so great.
