What does the captain do on the pitch?

It's not like being a cricket captain where they have to make tactical decisions, because the coach on the sidelines seems to do all that.

It seems to me their job is only to motivate players, and talk to the media after the game?

Who was the Nix captain last week after Coveny went off?

The captain's the only players who's legally allowed to talk to the ref.

Three for me, and two for them.

The Captain's role really depends on a team. Like B II said, they are there to officially communicate with the ref, provide leadership and motivational qualities, and in some cases serve as the extension of the coach/manager on the pitch in terms of organising tactics, tempo of play, etc. But ultimately it really depends on what exact qualities the manager/club are looking for in their captain, and the captain's own personality.

By the way, Richard Johnson took over the captaincy after Coveny went off against Perth.

'Fraid not, Buffy.

The Laws of the Game do not give the captain any special privileges. He's got no more, or less, right to talk to the referee than anybody else on the park. The idea that the captain of a footie team has special rights with the ref is just a misconception that some people seem to have got from watching the egg-chasers.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

That's interesting, since on at least a couple of occasions I've had refs refuse to talk to me as I wasn't the captain at the time.

It is interesting. Maybe the refs concerned were making life easier for themselves. No basis in the Laws tho'!

From the FIFA Laws of the Game:
"The captain of a team has no special status or privileges under the Laws of the Game but he has a degree of responsibility for the behaviour of his team."

Jag, i think you'll find that most Ref's, RUles or not, will allow Captaisn to talk to them, unless there complete F**ks, i've seen it all throughout my time playing

Not arguing with that, Muso. I wasn't saying that the referee should stop a captain talking to him. I remember once being asked by a BNU coach if his captain could speak to me regarding decisions etc. I don't have a problem with it. Just pointing out that it seems to be have been wrongly accepted as part of the Laws of the Game that only the Captain is allowed to speak to the ref because it's normal in League and Rugby.

Some referees, like myself, will let any player talk to them. Just as long as what they are saying is within reason!!

Above all the captain should be the leader of the team, both smart and inspirational. You really need both qualities, otherwise you get a Richie McCaw-type character. It's great being the boots-and-all guy leading from the front, but you can't make the sound decisions for the team if you don't also have the ability to pull back and see the big picture.  So a good captain has both facets of the game in spades.

you need somone who can help lift the spirit of other team members and lift their performance but not let his own performance drop at the same time

The only ref that has refused to discuss things with me as captain when i have had any issues also promptly red carded me 15 minutes later for dissent (a yellow card offense) for saying "that's ridiculous" 20m away from him, to a teammate when he allowed a goal that was offside and flagged as such by the linesman.  He racked up 13 red cards in 3 weeks.

Just like King Leonidas who led the Spartan 300 against the Persians. There's a captain if ever I saw one.....!!!
