I'm sure someone on here would know the answer.   I couldn't really find anything on the internet about it. Seems strange especially since netball, rugby sevens and hockey are.

Who cares. The commonwealth games are a joke competition anyway. Much like the Uefa Cup or the Scottish Premier League.

Three for me, and two for them.

Sure it would be a joke, just like the rest of the Commonwealth Games, but it would be another chance to see New Zealand rep team in action on the international stage.

No country could ever send a half-decent team, considering the Games fall in the World Cup years, and usually take place during the club season. Good luck trying to convince FIFA to create a window for that.

Besides, most other countries (Oceania excluded) get planty of international football with the World Cup, contintental championships and the qualifiers for both, so there's simply no interest anywhere for something like this.

Apart from the Comm Games being a relatively tinpot event, it's a little surprising that they haven't tried to bring in a variant like futsal, in the way that 7s has found its way into these multi-sport festival thingies.

It should be noted that team sports like Netball & Hockey are relatively recent introductions to the Comm Games (since 98 I think, and basketball for the first time in 2006).

Futsal might be a worth a look at. If any one cares.

I know, I know, its serious!

just personally I don't like football at the olympic games, there's already a world cup, and various championships for football.......I know it's only the under 21s but even they have world champs etc....

But why the hell is there an U-23 competition at the Olympics? Along with 7's rugby it's a complete joke. The full sport should be there or not at all.
Having 7's rugby means it should be acceptable to have half court basketball. I understand players can't get released for the Olympics so it needs to be U-23, but come on it's so farcical!

my main concern is ath the olympics is supposed to celebrate amatuer sports, now I know that there are very few true amatuer sports around, but surely we can do without things like footy, golf, rugby 7's and all the other professional sports that are applying to be in the olympics.

Commonwealth games and olympics are for competitions and events, not sport.

Allegedly

Because IOC want football at the Olympics - still draws massive audiences on TV and in the grounds. There's no way in hell FIFA would hand over full national teams to the IOC and thus risk competition with its own flagship event (which is bigger than the Olympics anyway, so FIFA ain't going to do anything to jeopardise that), so the U23 (plus 3 over-age players) is a compromise they've settled on for now.

The Commonwealth Games is a micky mouse event left over from a colonial era that doesn't exist any more.

Football at the Olympics already doesn't do it for many people.
