Yeah it's a weird one that.. For non-contract players it means they can be registered to two clubs so long as they're not in the same league. But I haven't heard of it in a professional environment before. Maybe because Beograd are in a different league they call it dual registration in Serbia because you're registered in two different leagues.

I note Belograd is also based in the big city of Belgrade - so probably a better club, for a young Kiwi of Croatian parentage, than the earlier mentioned loan deal to Javor Ivanjica in "backwoods" Serbia.

No offence intended to the liberal thinking, racially tolerant folk of rural/provincial Serbia.

Good test for him. And great experience for a young Kiwi defender

Sure to be a shark fight, physically demanding league. Serbs generally don't take a backward step...

Mitchell made his debut for OFK Beograd on 15 October in a 1–0 home loss against 1st place FK Macva Sabac. They lost by the same scoreline to Sloboda Uzice (2nd) one week later on 22 October. Mitchell's team is currently 16th (last), however only losing by one goal against the two best teams in the league isn't too bad.

On Sunday they play at home against FK Zemun. Zemun are currently 10th so this could be a good chance to get some points.

Mitchell has played 8 league matches for OFK - the team is stinking up the league, coming last by a country mile.

At least Mitchell is getting a run, getting used to playing in foreign conditions?

I heard he had left from mutual consent.

Looks like he's joined

NK Celje in Slovenia.

Looks happy enough: https://www.facebook.com/nkcelje/photos/a.328887823911333.1073741828.328850037248445/996013670532075/?type=3&theater

Unfortunately, he didn't feature in the Celje's game  this weekend...

I see the Slovenian season has started with Celje losing away to Olimpija Ljubliana 1-3. Mitchell not in the match day squad.

Anyone know how he is going at all?

just to completely contradict myself I also heard a rumour (different source) that he may sign somewhere in England.

I understand he is back in NZ at the moment.

U23 football is rubbish though, watched Chelsea Chelsea Chelsea's U23 side lose to my PAFC's youth side in the EFL Trophy (on pens).

He'd be better off in the (inset name) NZ Premiership or trying to land a gig in League 1/2 UK or elsewhere in Europe at a similar level.

He’s tried both Serbia and Slovenia already, and got virtually zero playing time. He needs to be playing.

Those 6 mths in Eastern Europe wouldn’t have been easy. I understand he is a Croatian speaker not Serbian?? Still regardless he has taken a more difficult route, than the US College football path that someone like Brotherton initially took.

He may just mature quicker/develop a mental toughness earlier - which will go a long way to helping him succeed thousands of miles away from friends and family.

Also far more scouts will get to view him in the UK than NZ. So ups to him for preserving up north.

Good luck to him, and hopefully he can crack a pro career somewhere in Europe long term.

Bolton are playing like shark this season anyway, so might need to call on him for the first team. Obviously has talent if Crvena zvezda signed him, hope he can show it here

Croatian and Serbian are basically the same language - Croats use the Roman alphabet and Serbs use the Cyrillic alphabet but in spoken form they can all understand each other perfectly fine. At least as far as I know. El Grap can correct me if I'm wrong

As a Serb, I can tell you that there is a lot of discussion among the linguists (if that is what you call them) on both sides if the Croatian and Serbian are the same language. Will leave those discussions to them, but what I can tell you is that I can perfectly understand many of my Croatian friends and they can understand my Serbian - no issues.

About Adam, correct, he didn't get any game time for Red Star in Serbia (apart from 20 or so mins in a friendly against Olympiacos Athens - and I thought he did really well in that game).

He then went on loan to OFK Belgrade , a team that played in the 2nd tier in Serbia at the time and played 8 or so full games for them.

Serbian 2nd div is not great, but not terrible either, so Adam probably learned a few things there.

I certainly hope he succeeds in England. He is a nice chap that comes from a really nice family.

He also had a really short stint (loan deal from Red Star?) at some lower Div 1 Serbia team, that was based in a pretty small town/city from memory. Very short stint, and who knows rural Serbia may have a bit of struggle for a young Kiwi kid. Bit different to Belgrade I imagine.

Anyway my point being he’s taken a reasonably tough road to his career so far, and yes Im sure he’s learnt a lot.

Guessing that Ivanjica would be quite a culture shock...

According to Transfermarkt he was born in Croatia and is a dual national Croat-New Zealander. So obviously Croatia and Serbia are very different, but apparently he's Eastern European so not as much of a culture shock as if he were born and raise in Waikato or something.

Mitchell was born in NZ, and has pretty much spent most of his life here. He does have a Croatian mother as far as I know (or maybe she just has Croatian heritage, I'm not 100%). Neither country is actually in Eastern Europe, and they're actually quite different culturally. Furthermore, Ivanjica is a very small town in the backwoods of Serbia, so it's not really a place like Belgrade or Novi Sad where he could fit in relatively easily.

But other than that, yeah OK.

As a reminder see above. And my mistake the loan deal to the rural Serbian Div 1 side Ivanjica fell over.

Out of interest OFK Belgrade finished dead last, 2016-2017 season and were relegated. So his time there would have been challenging on and off the field.

Anyway good luck to him at Bolton

Yes, I think the Red Star wanted to send him to Javor Ivanjica (which is really quite rural and remote - definitely different to Belgrade !), but Adam didn't want to go (and I cannot really blame him !).

Bolton struggling in The Championship. If relegated doors may open for Mitchell. Regardless seems to be making an impression

Bolton lose to fellow Championship strugglers Burton 2-0.

Drop to relegation zone, with 1 game left. Is tight with Barnsley only point above out of the drop.

Bolton host mid table Notts Forest in their last game.

If Bolton drop to League One probably a positive for Mitchell’s playing prospects next season.

Bolton U23's win 3-1, to make PDL final.

Get feeling from afar, that he is one of better players in their U23's - and maybe not far off the first team squad. U23's had been struggling lately, but first game back for Mitchell after injury, and they win.

A few others from U23's have been promoted to their struggling Championship side, in latter half of season.

Bolton U23s win Professional Development League final with a 2-1 win over Notts Forest U23s. No idea on strength of this league, but just general feeling Mitchell maybe only an injury or two off the 1st team squad.

Certainly the U23s were struggling when he was injured.

Of course Bolton's Championship side could be relegated to League One tomorrow. That would no doubt selfishly, help Mitchell's chances of first team football.

Last day drama in The Championship!

Bolton beat Notts Forest 3-2 to stay up. Two late goals. At the 86th minute mark, Bolton were down 1-2.

A draw not enough to save them from the drop. Then bang & bang two goals in two minutes to win.

They still needed both Barnsley & Burton Albion to both lose or max draw, and both did lose. Barnsley thumped 1-4 at Derby, and Burton lost 1-2 at Preston.

Helped Bolton's cause that Derby and Preston were both still chasing spots in the promotion playoffs, so motivated to win. Derby got there and Preston missed out. Notts Forest in contrast had nothing to play for being mid table.

Anyway hopefully Mitchell can plus for a spot in Bolton's senior team match day squad, next season. He's only 21, so still plenty of time. Though if Nix are looking for a quality young defender?
