His international status may count against him if he's not going to be in the side on a regular basis but 5 centre backs is about right for a squad in a comp like that.

He was offered a contract to come back. Time went on and he didnt respond.

This is a bizarre quote from that article.

Started against Timber today. Didn't last the first half as he just picked up his second yellow.

Has he ever played a good game?

Honnestly all the games that i have seen Boyens playing in Toronto he was often struggled and they waived him at the end. Other than that I remember that he had a pretty bad game vs Spain in the confederation cup

pretty bad is about right, if you watch the highlights of that game he was personally at fault for i think 4 of their goals. not to say no one else made mistakes but he just seems to make far too many costly errors for a professional centre back

Had a good game against Wales with Siggie.

When he signed from Otago was he a standout in the national league? From what I've seen, he would struggle in the A-League.

He's one of Ricki's favourites,  no way he won't play for the AW's in the future.

well I hate to say it but for him to be one of Ricki's faves Ricki must be a f**king idiot

Old had a good Olympic campaign, hasn't done too well with getting time at his club.

Boyens has also had problems getting on the park, but has picked up a new club, so we'll see this season.

Just watche Toronto FC vs Chivas with Boyens getting full 90(1-1). And i have to say that Boyens had a pretty good game specially saving a goal on a Maicon's temptative

I think that Andrew has been suffering from a lack of match fitness which is why hes looked crap recently for the AWs.  Hopefully a season of starts will see him get back to the level he was at when he made is debut against Wales in '07.

Playing in a winning team and not conceeding goals. Maybe he's finally finding some form, wither that or his defensive partners must be awesome!!

As I said, just needs to get a decent run of games behind him to get his match fitness and confidence up.

He definately has the stature to be a commanding presence as a CB. Not too slow either. Needs to really work on his distribution though as that is his biggest weakness in my eyes.

Boxall / Reid / Nelsen all at some stage in their career have had a little time in a DM role, which i think is why they are reasonably comfortable with the ball at their feet and have a better passing range.

Unfortunately got 2 yellow cards in the game against Real Salt Lake. Not sure how many games he misses. One?

Isn't that his second red for the season (both off double yellows).

6 games in (rough guess) and two red cards already.

King of the Goat Parade was kind enough to answer our questions about Chivas USA ahead of their visit to Red Bull Arena this evening.

1) Robin Fraser was hired with the objective of improving Chivas' defense. Has this been realized and how has Andrew Boyens performed this season?

Jeff King: I think the defense is much better. Through 8 games, we've conceded 7 goals and earned three shutouts. Last season, we had conceded 11 goals in 8 games with two shutouts. It's a marked improvement, certainly. And Boyens has been a very capable fill-in for Conrad. I suspect that Conrad will get the starting nod when he's healthy, but the Kiwi has been great

But even more surprising is the way Fraser has stocked his roster with castoffs, some of whom seem to have come straight from the Island of Misfit Toys. Defender Andrew Boyens and midfielder Simon Elliott were both available to anyone that wanted them, yet have proved to be important contributors. Midfielder Nick LaBrocca has been a revelation in an attacking midfield role since being acquired in a trade for forward Alan Gordon, validating Fraser's decision to pass on acquiring U.S. international Benny Feilhaber. Forward Alejandro Moreno was chosen in the expansion draft by Vancouver, who promptly traded him to Chivas, where his three goals are tied for the team lead.

The Island of Misfit Toys! That's a great description of New Zealand actually.
