At this rate... with Wood, Greive, and Waine possibly all out of the Swedish match... could he be considered as a striker for the All Whites? Seems to be scoring as many goals as any other kiwis around the world.

Could he or Thomas play as a false 9? Remember Thomas doing it for PSV briefly when they had no fit strikers.

Mata will be in the mix. And doesn't sound like Greive's ankle injury was longterm one. Waine's was also an ankle problem at Plymouth, so hopefully he's on the mend.

Edit - McCowatt off at 72 mins (1-1). Finishes 1-1

Helsingor (5th) travel to Sonderjyske (3rd). Final season game, with nothing on it.

Vejle
(1st) and Hvidovre (2nd) already comfirmed as promoted to replace Horsens & AaB.

No McCowatt in match day squad.
Helsingor trail 2-1 approaching HT.

Edit - Helsingor lost 3-2.
McCowatt with 9 goals for the season. 7 of them post the mid season winter break. Still 1 season his Helsingor contract from memory, but if an offer came in, I reckon they would sell him. Helsingor not the biggest Danish club and I think they sold both Just & Liam Jordan.

Første træningskamp og sit første mål i den nye sæson 🙌🏻

Little Danish practice: first training game and his first goal of the new season.

Helsingør made the trip south down Zealand to Superliga side Lyngby - whose miraculous escape sent Horsens and Eli Just down - and won 2-0 today. Callum continued where he left off and scored one of the goals. Hopefully Lyngby (or any other side based in Copenhagen for that matter) liked what they saw up close because it seems like McCowatt is just flying at the moment.

Helsingør did just sell 10-league-goal, 18-year-old, Denmark youth international Alexander Lyng to the Swiss runners up Servette, so scouts do watch them.

Great news. With the regular goals towards the end of last season he was bound to get noticed eventually. That tidy finish vs the Swedes also can’t have hurt.

A quick google tells me they’re a mid table team. Hopefully he can get some consistent game time and the goals come from there.

Great move! Happy for him because I was a bit worried he was gonna get stuck in the second tier for a bit too long. His numbers have improved every season and he looked the best I've seen in the Sweden game so hopefully, he can kick on from here.

Yes a really good move hopefully for McCowatt. The fickle world of football. A year ago his great mate Just is the one signing for a Superliga team (Horsens) and it seems that McC by comparison is stagnating. Now it's Just back in the 2nd tier, and his mate up in the top flight.

Silkeborg is stronger oufit than Horsens. They finished 7th last Superliga season, not making the top 6 cutoff, but comfortably clear of relegation. They won the Superliga in 93-94, and were 3rd as recently as 21-22. Though have also been relegated a few times.

They were in the 2nd tier in 20-21 (got promoted that season), McC's first season at Helsingor, so would have crossed paths there.

As Carlind has already pointed out previously with likes of Just (didn't make much of an impression with Horsens) and Liam Jordan (struggling for game time in Swedish top flight) - it's a big jump up from the Danish 2nd tier. But McC was on fire 2nd half of Helsingor's season in the midfield. Be interesting to see where Silkeborg play him. In midfield or further forward.

From Wiki " Silkeborg coach Kent Nielsen managed to impress this time in the top division. His attacking style of play with focus on possession and short passing game"

Not that common for a Kiwi lad, but iirc Elijah Just signed to AC Horsens on a four year deal last term (although that hasn't exactly gone to plan thus far) and Marko Stamenic got a four year contract for his recent move to Serbia.

Long term certainty for all involved, and promising signs for three players who will be prominently involved in the national team set up for the best part of the next decade or so.

From Flying Kiwis.

SIF sports manager Jesper Stüker: “We are incredibly pleased that we have succeeded in bringing Callum McCowatt to SIF. He is a dynamic player who is good at challenging and can find solutions on his own in front of goals. He has proven in Helsingør, in his home country, and for his national team that he is goal-oriented player who excels in the final third. We believe we can develop Callum's abilities even more here at SIF where we believe he will fit well into our system. He covers many of the offensive positions. In SIF he is initially intended for a role of 8 but we know that he is also skilled as a 10.”

Silkeborg were one of the best clubs in Denmark throughout the 1990s, winning the league in 93-94 and competing in Europe several times. They’ve been relegated five times since the turn of the millennium however they bounced back up at the first attempt after each of the four most recent drops. Bit of a yo-yo team... until they shocked folks more recently with back to back third-placed finishes in 2020-21 and 2021-22. Only finished ninth last season but were comfortably clear of relegation.

So this is different to Eli Just joining newly promoted Horsens and then getting relegated after one year in the top flight. Silkeborg should have sturdier foundations. Also, as it stands, McCowatt is the only non Scandinavian player in the squad.

Good move for him. He wasn't going anywhere with his current club. This will test him and see what he's really capable off. He has so much potential...

Side question. How would you rate the main Scandinavian leagues? Dennmark/norway/sweeden? In that order?

Possibly Sweden then Norway, though the Norway vs Sweden debate is one far deeper than I can talk about.

Denmark has the richest/biggest team in Scandinavia - FC København - while teams like Midtjylland have made the Champions League in recent years, and Nordsjælland have sold players to big clubs in the top five leagues. They also have the smallest league, as both Eliteserien and Allsvenskan are sixteen team leagues compared to only twelve in Superligaen. The Danish Krone is also up 15% on the Swedish Krona (to 1.6 SEK to 1 DKK) in the last 11 months, so more appealing there too.

Malmö have also made it recently (21/22 maybe), finishing bottom in a group with Chelsea, Zenit and Juve maybe. There hasn't been a Norwegian side since Rosenborg in the mid-2000s if I remember correctly, though Bodø/Glimt had a very good Conference League run in 21/22, going out to Roma (who they beat 6-1 in the group stage) in the semifinal stage. Molde have also had an okay Europa League run in recent years.

Listening to Danish IFK Norrköping player Vito Hammershøy-Mistrati, who used to play for Randers in Denmark, he says Allsvenskan and Superligaen are comparable to twelve teams, but the extra four lower the standard. He does currently play in Sweden though, so I wouldn't expect him to deride the league too much. Another thing is Denmark play a split year season, the other two follow the calendar year. That makes it harder for teams who get into Europe, as they achieve that in November and then have to wait until July/August to play.

Looking at player output, so take a big pinch of salt, but a guy like Veton Berisha had 60 Eliteserien g/a in 68 appearances at Viking from 2020 to mid 2022. He went to Hammarby in Stockholm and only lasted six months; he's now back in Norway. Sweden's population is twice that of Norway's though, so. Also, Djurgården (another of the big three Stockholm clubs) were in a Conference League group with Molde last season and did the double over them, as DIF got 16 points and Molde finished third on 7.

As for Silkeborg, they were in the Conference League last season which is possibly a reason why they were not at the same level domestically. Adding six group stage fixtures in a group of West Ham, Anderlecht and Romanian side FCSB (who may or may not be former European champions) was always going to be tough. As it was, they beat FCSB home/away and lost the other four.

Another, possibly not insignificant, factor is that Silkeborg are one of only two Superligaen sides to play on artificial, the other being Nordsjælland (the two actually play for the El Plastico 'trophy'). Helsingør, of course, also play on artificial, so McCowatt should be used to the differences the two surfaces provide. He's not the only Silkeborg player signed from Helsingør either, striker Tonni Adamsen scored fifteen 1.Div goals in 21/22, which earnt him the move. He scored fourteen goals last season in his first Superligaen season.

Great move. I was really impressed with his recent games for the AW’s- mostly his movement. I can see why they are looking at his as at 8 as his late runs into the box showed a real desperation to score.

Danish Superliga kicks off and it's Kiwi derby straight up. Well it would have been if Joe Bell was there. But he was absent for Brondby who won 2-1 at Silkeborg.

McCowatt made his Silkeborg debut though. Came on at 82 mins (1-2).

Apparently the second goal came in the 22nd minute of first half stoppage time. Does anyone know what that was all about? Unless of course it’s just an error on Google.

There was a long delay for lightning in the area just before the half hour mark.

Would've thought they'd have just stopped the clock and resumed from the point they went off. Certainly does seem a bit odd. 😅
