Great news for Wood, another month with Birmingham

"Kiwi frontman Chris Wood will be staying at Blues for another month - and fellow strikers Marlon King and Nikola Zigic are also both closing in on a return to action.

Wood, 19, has performed well since arriving from West Bromwich Albion at the start of August and has penned another short-term loan deal until after the game at Nottingham Forest on 2 October.

His full-blooded style and never-say-die spirit has impressed Blues fans and he has already found the back of the net twice - late on in the 3-0 UEFA Europa League home win over C.D. Nacional and in the 2-2 npower Championship draw at Watford last weekend.

Manager Chris Hughton believes Wood (pictured above and below) is a player that is improving by the day and that's why he was keen to secure his services for a longer period of time.

Hughton exclusively told bcfc.com: "Chris is someone who has got better in the period of time he has been with us. Being in and around the team and getting games under his belt has done him a world of good.

"I'm delighted we've got Chris for a longer period and with the players who have been injured on the way back we can get back into a situation where we have competition for places up front, and that can only be good."

Good news but can anyone provide an explanation for these short term deals?

The initial one month loan seemed slightly odd but this one even more so, I'd have thought if he's performing well give him at least until the next window.

Or perhaps this kind of deal is more common than I realise? I'm certainly no expert.

Both clubs may be a bit hesitant about a longer loan, brum bc they have other strikers coming back from injury and WBA in case they have injuries or poor form and need wood in their squad at some point. Hence, short term allows wood to get games under belt from WBA point of view and gives brum striker option during busy period. But if WBA sign another good striker, odemwingie returns to fitness while wood playing well for brum it wouldn't surprise me to see longer loan next time. But many variables and uncertainties for both clubs at mo, hence short term for now seems to me.Marius Lacatus2011-09-04 21:37:07

Giving him one month contracts also gives him a bit of extra motivation to perform on game day. With a one month deal he knows he has 4-6 games to earn a new deal, rather than getting too complacent/comfortable after signing a 6 month loan. I don't mind what Birmingham are doing at all, as long as Chris continues to play.

At the start of the year they were playing one up front but recently have had Rooney and Wood playing together which seems to be working.

This tweet was just reposted on BBC's live football blog:

From Dave, excited WBA fan, via text: "Re 1427. When Chris Wood turned Cannavaro and nearly won it for New Zealand against Italy at the 2010 World Cup, I knew we had a special player. Great experience for him on loan."

And again, Wood the flavour of the day it seems:

stewiew_t on Twitter: "Chris Wood - First New Zealander to score a hat-trick in European football, I think."

Can anyone clear this up? Is Wood even the first New Zealander to score a hat-trick in English football? Ceri Evans only scored about three in total for Oxford Utd, so that rules him out.

European? Wynton never got three?

England possibly - although define the level as FrankieMac may have in Southern division 120 for London Poly 6ths.Hard News2011-09-12 01:49:54

Hopefully some highlights can be found. Great for him - Might get a bit more game time at West Brom when he returns if he keeps scoring.

5 in 3 games, not bad!

They answered it. Killen got three for Oldham in 2004 in the FA Cup

well done woodsy!! You've needed this. Keep it up boy. More goals, especially in Europe, and you'll be going places.
Just keep getting game time and goals, this is the time to prove yourself, and you dont wanna be sitting on the benches for anyone!

Well done!

Watch out for Chris' goals tonight on "The Football League Show" Sky Sport 2, 10.30pm
Also his goals are on the TV3 website:

Tip for viewing football (or any footage) on UK websites such as BBC Sport, BBC iPlayer or ITV Player which have territorial restrictions (i.e. ordinarily can't be viewed outside UK):
I find this free software download very useful: assigns you a UK IP address which you turn on when wanting to view footage: "Expat Shield":
Same software also recommended and available from cnet.com (ultra reliable software review and free download website):

Great news! Although I think the EPL with west brom may be too hard for him to get into, try get promoted with a side and he'll have a great chance. Maybe should have stayed at Brighton, looking how they're going.

Only bad thing is that now I'm cheering for scummy Birmingham.....
