Seems to keep getting these cameo appearances from the bench so he can’t be off manager’s radar entirely. Hopefully one or two starts in cup games coming up? Might be a tough call whether to stay or go at the end of the season if they end up qualifying for the Europa league or conference league (which would presumably mean more games for the fringe players).

Newcastle sitting 6th after 11 games, 1 point of Europa spot, they are a game behind Man U in 5th however, they could realistically be figthting for a Europa spot, long way to go before the Jan transfer window.

Isak injured. He’s 3rd choice striker behind Wilson and Isak currently, with other wingers able to play centrally. Might change if he starts getting goals. But that’d be like Sotirio last season, unexpected on pedigree.

Can’t say that if I was him signing up for a relegation scrap sounds like fun.  But he knows the PL and the EFL very well so may wish to go back to a favorite club or place. Getting assists from James Maddison would be alright I reckon! Something odd between manager and owner though there.

Wood doesn't strike me as a Brendan player but I don't think he'll be at Leicester for much longer.

Leicester (my other team) doesn't really need a ST got Vardy, Daka and Iheanacho so can't see him getting any gametime. I'd say the only prem club I could see him getting game time would be maybe Brighton not sure if he suits their playstyle or Southampton or Everton are the only other clubs he'd be able to really compete for a starting spot.

Wolves? 5 goals in 11 games.
Not seen them play for a minute, but they obviously have problems at the attacking end.

I'm hoping he will get more minutes in this one rather than coming on with 2 mins left. It's Newcastles 3rd game in 7 days, and Wilson was coming back from a Hamstring injury in the first of those. Isak is also still out (until after the WC I believe). If he can't get 30 minutes or so today then he'll be getting pretty frustrated I'd say.

Surely, if Newcastle can stay in ocntention for 4th Woodsy wants to stay, even if he's a bench player for a season or two before retirement he'll get some games in Europe.

Big ask for Newcastle to stay in the top 4, plus is always chance they will release Woodsman early. But I'm sure he would be excited to be at the club if they qualified for the UCL.

He's already played in the Europa League from memory.

Yep, one season as a teenager at Birmingham on loan (11/12), when they were in the competition as a Championship side, having won the League Cup the previous season. He scored a goal in their playoff win against Portuguese side Nacional, and also a 90+10 winner away at Club Brugge in the group stage.

The other side of the coin if they do make the Champions' League (long time yet), is that he'd be far from the only player to have aspirations to play in the competition. Add in the Premier League spending power, the PIF's spending power, the increased competition in the UCL, and the allure of UCL football, it seems quite unlikely they wouldn't strengthen their squad. Wood is already getting crumbs, so could well be a candidate to be improved on or moved on.

Also, when clubs qualify for Europe, some of them don't have a big enough squad to do justice to either Europe or the Prem. At his age he might be happy to be backup in the Prem than play lower down or in the drop zone

Woodsy did a great job for the8 or so minutes he was on. Won several balls, was brought down making a good break. Worked hard to keep the defensive lines tight. Good job.

I think Howe sees him as reliable in holding possession, pressing and following instructions. But not a player who’s going to threaten and create a lot with ball at feet outside the box, the way he expects his other forwards to.

Newcastle in a 4-0 canter. Wilson a double plus an assist.

Wood his now familiar 5 min cameo (4-0) on for Wilson

NU with Southampton, Palace, Chelsea (H) Leicester & Leeds next. They could be in the top 4 for awhile more yet

Poor Woodsy can’t catch a break. Had a glorious chance to break his goal drought with a volley on his left peg at point blank range, but skewed it. The Villa defense were absolutely traumatised so likely the kindest defence he’ll face for a while too.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe
Wilson is ill. Will Woodsy get a start?

Cynic- what’s the odds on Isak being back?  Or Joelinton/Saint Maximin given the starting duties up front?

Optimist- starts and gets a hatty!

Reputation in the PL is such a short term phenomenon. Though some always remember his Burnley goals, a run of goals and performances and everyone will remember that he’s actually been a long serving thoroughbred. Murphy and Almiron have lifted their stock to the point where Grealish is eating crow and Howe is looking like a genius. Hope Woodsy likewise turns perceptions around.

1st Premier League goal this season. Hopefully not the last!

Get in!

On after Wilson subbed at halftime, Wood joins the party with a nicely taken second half goal in the 58 minute.

😎

So much delight on his face and those of his teammates!

That's pure strikers instinct that one. Gets the ball with back to goal & then shooting on the turn. Incredibly difficult, and he made it look very easy.

I don't watch much football (compared to most on here anyway!). I make a point of watching 2 matches each week for the last several years though, Nix and whatever team Wood is playing for (Newcastle at the moment!). First week in a long time I miss either and Nix win 4-1 AND Wood scores a nice goal! Love both results, but wish I saw them watching the live coverage!

Was a 4-1 win to Newcastle in the end. Impressive result on the road, and up to 3rd. Who knows they could be a real chance of UCL qualification.

Wood might get a start a midweek in League Cup verus Palace.

So glad Wood is off the mark. Hopefully this won’t be his only PL goal this season but he needs more starts. He’ll likely get a start against Palace and that can give him a chance to convince Eddie he deserves a start in Newcastle’s last PL game before the WC which is against Chelsea.

He won’t be a starter based on form though will he? He is a sub in the team now and only gets the late substitution and non-PL games unless there is injury.

Wilson is injury prone. Wood could easily end up getting a run of starts at some stage. Scored a very nice goal against Southampton.

It's only the League Cup tonight, so I'd say he's a good chance of running on.

Lots of games too depending on their results. Howe rewards form and it’s done very well for him so far.

Wilson was off at halftime last game.

It's likely Wood will start against Palace in the league cup I think. PL will be priority and I'm sure Howe will give most of the guys who have been getting 90 mins each week a rest.

Looks like Sky doesn't have it on there schedule though? Despite having a few of the other cup matches at the same time...

Wilson was off at halftime last game.

From Flying Kiwis, Wilson had been sick in the lead up to the St Marys game, and reported he was dizzy at HT. Hence Woodsman got his chance.

Wood gets the full 90+4 mins in the cup match. 0-0.

Scores from the spot (taking the first kick) in Penalty shootout as Newcastle win 3-2!

When it comes to penalties, Wood just doesn't miss.
