Signed for Swope Park Rangers in the USL. They finished miles ahead of St Louis.

Good news then? Hope he can get regular game time for them as he did at St. Louis?

why do all these second tier USA teams have such dodgy sounding names?

Doesn't help someone's chances of getting a call up when the name of your team sounds like a joke

Even if Musa is eligible he seems well done the centre back pecking order now. Esp with Durante & Smith back available, and emergence of Brotherton.

Likes of Wynne & Colvey may spend most this US season playing in the USL (with their MLS feeder teams), but they have effectively been signed on MLS contracts.

Musa is on a straight USL contract, and needs to be playing at a higher level or hope for a raft of injuries to come back into AWs reckoning.

Isn't this team part of the expansion for next year?

Hasn't he been mostly playing as a DM for the last couple of years?

No. Might be confused with Henderson's team Indiana Eleven which has applied to be part of the MLS expansion.

Actually see that Swope Park (based in Kansas) are only 2 years old, and the feeder USL club to MLS side Sporting Kansas City.

According to Soccerway was a centreback in today's USL game

Wynne has not signed an MLS contract yet. He could play for the Whitecaps if they needed to but his contract is with Whitecaps 2 like de Vries

What's the reasoning on deciding Musa is eligible?

Wynne was announced by NZF.
Roux and Burfoot we assume as have been listed as injured/in wider training groups since, and Roux has talked about wanting to play.
De Vries was under a cloud at the same time as Musa last year, but has since had his Fifa nationality listed as NZL.
What have we got for Musa?

Permalink Permalink

NZF has said every player that was applied for was granted the exemption. So the assumption is he was applied for.

Except that statement was pre: the de Vries/Musa situations coming to light last year.

Someone I know played junior youth football with James Musa and is a family friend of him.

He told me, around last year maybe October? or Somewhere around there that Hudson wanted him to get his eiligibility sorted. That's all I know.

Is that not a job for football New Zealand?

From what I know of the process, it requires players to provide evidence of their reasons for moving to NZ etc

Had his Fifa Nationality listed as 'New Zealand' in Auckland City's Oceania Champions League teamsheet - you reckon they're lying?

Musa's Swope Park Ranger's beat Deklan Wynne's Whitecaps II by 3-1.  Looks like Musa has played last few games as a DM.

Ben McKendry scored the Whitecap's goal.   Francis De Vries not in matchday squad for Whitecaps II.

Interesting experience for Musa earlier today as his Swoke Park Rangers team hosted Phoenix Rising. In Phoenix side were Shaun Wright-Phillips and Didier Drogba.

Home crowd only 1,400 souls as finished 2-2. Bit of a come down from a packed Stamford Bridge. Drogba got a brace

Can only presume Phoenix has signed such big names as have an owner with deep pockets and/or seeking to bid for a MLS licence like Craig Henderson's Indiana Eleven.

Didn't realise Henderson had moved from Sweden. Playing alongside Mexican legend Gerardo Torrado.

Swope Park had a 4-0 home win over the weekend, and currently lie 3rd in the USL Western Conference.

Musa is definitely now playing as a DM, and this season has started 13 of 15 games. This Thursday travels to Vancouver to play Whitecaps II (12th place in same conference) and it's Kiwi contingent.

Would he be worth another look-in at the Nix? Or is there some promise in him getting a gig somewhere in the MLS in the next couple of years?

No mention of Musa in NZF's article about Kiwis playing in the USA.

Before the developments of recent weeks, there were only four New Zealanders plying their trade in the Major League Soccer (MLS) system – Jake Gleeson (Portland Timbers), Kip Colvey (San Jose Earthquakes) and the Vancouver Whitecaps pair of Deklan Wynne and Francis de Vries. But that figure has now doubled in a short space of time with Myer Bevan and Stefan Marinovic adding to the Kiwi takeover at Vancouver, Michael Boxall linking up with Minnesota United and Bill Tuiloma strongly rumoured to be joining Gleeson at the Timbers.

The New Zealand influence is nearly as strong in the women’s game with four current or former Ferns starring in the NWSL – Rosie White (Boston Breakers), Katie Bowen (FC Kansas City), Rebekah Stott (Seattle Reign) and Abby Erceg (North Carolina Courage). Away from those high-profile leagues, there are a couple of others on the books of professional outfits with Craig Henderson featuring for Indy Eleven in the North American Soccer League (NASL) and Chris James recently returning from injury for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the United Soccer League (USL). There are also a myriad of Kiwis in the college system, including Football Ferns Daisy Cleverley (Berkeley University), Martine Puketapu (Colorado University) and Stephanie Skilton (Syracuse University).

Seems weird considering they even talk about Henderson and James. Is he not eligibile after all?

NZF may still be hurting after he skipped an agreed return to Sth Melbourne after his last stint at TW.

I believe it was a beef between Musa and South Melbourne. ( who signs off International transfers - NZF from memory signed off transfer to USA)

Guessing it is basically an extended trial the way his deal is set up, so not sure he will get any MLS game time. Hope he takes his chance & does enough to get his contract extended. We could use another DM in contention for NZ selection.

how is the deal set up? would they use an international player spot on a player they may not use? i am not really up on the rules in the mls regarding overseas players and would be interested to know.

How long has be been over there? Might be close to getting a green card perhaps.

MLS is different in that you can buy and sell the number of internaitonal players spots you have. Think Minnesota piad $50K to gain a spot to have Boxall filled.

Deal until the end of the season with options for 2018, 2019 & 2020

MLS clubs can sell international roster spots to each other, so they are pretty easy to get extra. For example the Whitecaps bought a spot for $50k allocation money in order for Marinovic to sign and another one for 75k yesterday to sign someone else.
