Yipe Herdman starts & is captain of Whitecaps II today. The MLS first team play next weekend in New York (5 hour flight) so I thought he may have been rested from 2nd team duty today.

Oh & the Whitecaps MLS coach is Italian. He probably had an urge to give him a kiss on both cheeks before running on.

Herdman, Old, Dibley-Dias, Stamenic & Garbett a potentially exciting Olywhites midfield - more yes if Singh goes as well. Conchie may have to hope for a travelling reserve spot at best. Though I guess Singh & Old could go as attackers alongside Wood & Waine

Not in the squad this time around for the Whitecaps trip to New York.

Highly likely we'll see him turn out for Whitecaps II in Utah tomorrow against Real Monarchs SLC in the MLS Next Pro - 2pm kickoff (NZT).

Full 90, a goal and an assist for Herdman this morning in a come from behind 4-3 win over LAFC in the MLS Next Pro.

Assist to make it 3-3.

And the game winner off a header after losing his marker in the box.

While we're here, Finn Linder came off injured not long before H/T.

I think it's Tony Readings who has a similar sort of cool story on Tyler Bindon. Hanging around Ferns trainings as a wee kid when his mum Jenny was the Ferns GK.

Now Readings is one of Bazeley's assistants

Loan move to Calgary. Can only guess that the CPL is seen as a better place to develop than the MLS Next Pro (basically a youth player league).

He certainly doesn't seem close to breaking into the senior MLS squad at the moment. Lots of young Caps II team mates, have more recently been called up.

Done deal 🤝
Will be good to see how he goes at senior level, hopefully he gets some good minutes under his belt.

Cameo debut for Herdman. On at 90 mins in a 2-2 draw.
Probably best he doesn't mention abscondee Myer Bevan's name around Cavalry. Not that he likely knows him at all.

Herdman's time at Vancouver may have permanently come to an end. If so, head across to Toronto to join Dad?

With four games remaining in the MLS Next Pro season, Vancouver Whitecaps II have loaned Jay Herdman across to the CPL. There he joins a team which had six games left, positioned to make a run at the playoffs and maybe even for the championship. Not sure how to compare the two levels (American academy team versus Canadian semi-pro team) but this will mean consequential senior football for the next month or two.

The Whitecaps perspective is the trickier one. In the past, they’ve used the ol’ CPL loan deal as a prelude to releasing blokes. Herdman has had three short-term MLS stints this year – including making an MLS debut – but so have several other academy lads along the way. There’s a limit of four of those call-ups per year before you have to sign that player to a permanent contract, hence why Herdman’s been allowed to chill at the Olympics and with the reserves since the most recent of those call-ups back in April. And, to his credit, he’s been awesome for those reserves. Six goals and three assists in 20 matches. It’s been a breakthrough campaign for him.

However, at the same time as Herdman was loaned out, Jeevan Badwal and Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau were both given multi-year Whitecaps deals from out of that same VW2 team. This was right before rosters were frozen in both leagues so it was kind of a now-or-never situation (at least for this year).

Can’t say that Badwal (an attack-minded midfield) and Chateau (a striker) are totally different positional options than Herdman because they’re not. Maybe they were simply chosen instead of him? Maybe there wasn’t room at this time for JH but they still wanted to get him some senior experience ahead of next year? Thing is,
his contract with VW2 expires at the end of the season so we can’t discount that he might have played his last game for the club he joined as a 13-year-old. This all remains to be seen.

If he does get released, Chief needs to get on the phone asap

Not so sure. Didn't really impress much at the Olympics.
If he's a good prospect you'd think his dad would be able to get him in the Toronto wider squad.

On at 81 mins today for Cavalry (2-0) in a 2-0 win.

Bit of a blowout at the moment 4-1 Cavalry against 10 man Pacific.

Breakout game for Herdman though with his first senior start at club level.

Headed goal for his first senior goal.

First assist at senior level too for good measure.

Good start... hopefully he does well and gets a chance at a higher level after the loan. Would be a good pick up for the NIX IMO if they do choose to play a fast paced 1 touch type game up top.

Yeah a great game for Herdman & Cavalry (42 pts) up to 2nd, though unlikely to catch Forge (1st, 47 pts) with 2 games left before the playoffs.

But a bad day out for home team Pacific. They had their keeper sent off in the 3rd min. 88 mins Dyer (1-4). Pacific 6th on GD, one spot out of the playoffs.

Cavalry with the upset 1-0 win away at Forge (Hamilton, Ontario).
Means they get to host the CPL Final in Calgary.
https://canpl.ca/video/recap-forge-fc-cavalry-fc-2024-cpl-playoffs

Forge to host Atlético Ottawa in the semi final, to find the other finalist.

Herdman started and got 71 mins (1-0). Myer Bevan played in last year's CPL final but Cavalry lost to 2-1 to Forge in ET. So some revenge today

Forge beat Ottawa in the semi, so CPL will be a repeat of last year Cavalry verus Forge this time in Calgary.

And Cavalry are CPL champions!  2-1 win over Forge
71 mins for loanee Herdman (2-1).

Be interesting to see what happens from here. Whitecaps still think he has a possible MLS future, or is his loan deal made permanent?
Released to sign up with dad in Toronto?

Involved in the leadup to the winning 2nd goal.

Jay Herdman: “I was fortunate to join a top side like Cavalry, coming into one of the best teams in the league. I'm playing with a lot of players, great players around me, and that’s getting the best out of myself. It’s a physical league with some really quick and technical players. So, joining the CPL, it’s been a good step for me. The main difference is the CPL is men's football. MLS Next Pro is great in that academy kids can make that push and hopefully get a first team deal in MLS. There's also a line between winning and developing. But here in the CPL, people just want to win. I think it was the right time for me to try something else, try something new.”

Herdman got six goals and three assists in 20 MLS Next Pro games. He had one goal and one assist in his eight Canadian Premier League matches. Also can’t overlook his nine minutes of MLS action, nor sitting on the bench for some CONCACAF Champions Cup. It’s been an eventful year.

Up Next: To be determined...

Could be an interesting pick up for either of the A Leagus sides. Clearly has potential... but is he good enough?

Well Dad can't help him, having left Toronto. A gig in the CPL might be his best bet for now. Seemed to do well at Cavalry.

Our friend from Canada, Juneof86 was sceptical about him being good enough for the MLS.

Presumably he has a UK passport through John, so he might get a crack with some trials over there. Doubt he's looking at the A League, though the Nix have shown there is a pathway into Europe from that comp.

Yeah, couldn't agree more to be honest. The A-League shouts were probably a bit premature given he's only had a handful of senior matches.

He's staying with a successful team over in Canada, and has the added incentive of continental competition with CONCACAF Champions Cup matches against Mexican club Pumas next month as well.

Impressive result for little Cavalry. Pumas one of the biggest clubs in Liga MX.

Maybe the Mexicans literally froze. Game was played in Victoria, Vancouver Island, usually one of the more mild regions of Canada. But apparently a snow event was blowing through and it was sub-zero temperatures. Looks like in the video they all have the leggings on.

It will be several degrees warmer next week in Mexico City.

A few injuries and Herdman would have to be in AWs contention.
