Odd move? Relegated from Serie B last season and club in financial difficulty according to wiki. Aren't they one of the clubs Morris pagniello farms non euro kids to?

Seems Jesse has his brother Harry staying after it didn't work out at Central coast Mariners - maybe he'll try out at Vicenza too.

Have been looking for info on Vicenza Calcio and they have an interesting history, mostly in Serie A and Serie B:

Vicenza are a larger Italian club fallen on hard times comparable to say some of the top-flight English clubs who've been down the divisions in the last dozen years like Sunderland, Man City, Southampton, Leeds, Wolves.

Played in Serie A most seasons 1955 - 1980's, yo-yoed in 1980's due to match-fixing scandels etc., in Serie A 1995- 99 & 2000- 2001

2001 - 2013: 12 consecutive seasons in Serie B

Matches in Serie A : 986 (30 seasons)

Won the Italian Cup 1997 & made the UEFA Cup-Winners' Cup semi against Chelsea 1998

Thrashed the Dutch Eredivisie team Roda our Ivan Vicelich played for a few years later 5-0 at home in that competition.

Have boasted major players in the past like Roberto Baggio, Paolo Rossi, Luca Toni, Francesco Coco, Benito Carbone, Paul Okon, Mohamed Kallon, Joachim Bjorkland...

Lots of youth talent even in recent years: they've had nine Italian u-21 internationals play for Italy u-21 while at Vicenza the last decade:

http://translate.google.co.nz/translate?hl=en&sl=it&u=http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicenza_Calcio&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dvicenza%2Bcalcio%2Bserie%2Ba%2Brecord%26rlz%3D1C1AFAB_enNZ468NZ468%26espv%3D210%26es_sm%3D93

Their stadium has a capacity of 21,000 (but only "officially" 12,300 seated - in successful seasons they cram many more in standing).

"Since 2006 the club has a modern Technical Center, located at Isola Vicentina. The property is spread over an area of 65,000 m² and is divided into two symmetrical units, one dedicated to the first team with locker rooms, warehouse, medical rooms, a gym and outbuildings executive offices, meeting rooms and a conference room, and one dedicated to the youth team with the same services, in addition to a large gym. Outside the surface is structured in 5 training pitches, of which 4 grass and a further one in clay."

Jesse, like another Kiwi playing for a club in the same division, Liam Graham, will be full time & won't have to have another job, despite Vicenza's well-known financial problems....

In Italy, supporters of Hellas Verona refer to supporters of, their rivals, Vicenza as "Mangi Gatti", (cat eaters) in reference to some otherwise long forgotten 16th Century siege.

I remember at a Vicenza - H. Verona match a while back, the visiting Verona fans brought Whiskas banners.

Gareth should be told.

Jesse's international clearance only came through two weeks ago and he's now straight into the reserves at Vicenza Calcio in Serie C:

Finally my clearance came through! Made my debut for the reserves today. Drew 1-1 and played the whole game at CB against Venezia (Venice).

"First Kiwi born player to score a full-time pro contract in Italy!" - see www.nzherald.co.nz/Bay-of-Plenty-Times/sport.

Declan's stocks just rose that much higher.

Always thought he looked decent at DM previously and has by all accounts looked solid as a CB.

Still a while off an All White call up probably, given its a third division team, still great to see.

Declan must be laughing so hard right now. Continually challenged and mocked he clearly has the best success record out of any coaches mentoring youth currently.

"Next year he should line up for New Zealand at the Under-20 World Cup alongside childhood friends, All Whites Ryan Thomas and Tyler Boyd. It surely will not be long before all three are lining up for the All Whites, just as they planned as bright-eyed 12-year-olds in rep teams."

Am I correct in thinking that Ryan Thomas and Tyler Boyd are both too old for this..?

Come on.  People on here fizz their pants when a young kiwi gets into an English academy, and that's not even pro football.  I think if you can find someone to pay you to play you're doing bloody well wherever you are.  Doesn't mean you're an All White in the making, but let's remember how tough it is to even get to that stage.  You go to a new country, learn a new language and try and prove you're better than guys who have been there all their lives.  It's not easy

I agree. Take the Edge name away and we'd all be fizzing. Best of luck to him - pretty sure the angst has been real for a while for a DM so let's hope he can be the man.

Jesse made the first team squad at Vicenza in Serie B for several games this season - Vicenza have had a sensational season and are third in the league and close to promotion to Serie A.

39 games played - three to go. Four points off second place. The top two sides gain automatic promotion - the next six enter the play-offs.

Would be sensational if Vicenza gain promotion and they retain Jesse.

He's been on the bench for the first team six times this season. Also playing for the reserves.

Jesse Edge stats this season:

http://int.soccerway.com/players/jess-edge/193487/

Serie B Table:

http://int.soccerway.com/national/italy/serie-b/20...

The season finishes May 23 with the play-offs for a couple of weeks afterwards.

But Vicenza will probably release him for the u-20 World Cup since he's only a fringe first team player.

Jesse is back in NZ and played in the u-20's games vs. Panama and Qatar last week.

 https://twitter.com/jesseedge

Meanwhile, his Italian team Vicenza are in the hunt for promotion to Serie A.

0-0 away draw vs. fifth place Spezia leaves Vicenza third on the table on 64 points (equal points with Bologna)

Four points behind second-placed Frosinone.

Two more games left - Carpi have secured promotion for the first time in their history (as champs)

Vicenza have eighth placed Livorno away next weekend.

And if they get a result in that game, and Frosinone stumble, it sets up a decider for second place when Vicenza play Frosinone at home in their last game on May 23.

Biggest couple of weeks in Vicenza's history since they were last in Serie A in 2001 and won the Italian Cup in 1997.

Vicenza drew on the weekend with Livorno.

Leaves them third on the table equal on points with Bologna.

A win next weekend will secure third place for the season plus a better promotion play-off draw.

But it will be tough because they are playing second placed Frosinone, although at home.

First two teams, Carpi and Frosinone are already promoted.

Vicenza have already cemented a play-off spot.

Jesse's club narrowly missed out on promotion to Serie A, after finishing third in Serie B and losing out in the promotion semi-final to Pescara 1-0 away and 2-2 at home three weeks ago.

Bologna were promoted after winning the promotion final.
