But the thing I'd like to know, are these players any better than some of the young talent still in the country? You can make a div 2 US college without even being a current NZ age grade rep.

It's a really good point, because I know that there are good young locals players that never would dream of trying to make it overseas and have fallen through the cracks due to lack of coaching quality and lack of family support. Without those two things in your back pocket, you are very much doomed to stay stagnate at the top local regional league and never be seen until it's too late.

However the fact remains that these set of boys have taken the opportunity to receive quality coaching at established professional clubs. Most of them, at the very least, will probably end up at Jeremy Christie's playing ability. Better than NZFC, not quite A-league but should be able to cope with league one or USL division one playing level. Hopefully they get that decent coaching mentor and able to progress to the next level. They should just take in all the coaching and start thinking about their game so much more that they should able ask questions about how they should organise their own game. Getting the best tips from pros and trainers and alway improving at the club. Hopefully they would be better than A-League playing level that they are playing in the top european leagues at the end of the day.AllWhitebelievr2010-10-31 19:20:56

Does playing in the Brisbane Premier League count as overseas? Got to be a similar level to Belgian third div!
Permalink Permalink
about 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I don't think so: I prefer that a 19 years old play in the belgian 3rd division and have the chance to improve and get noticed by a better team than playing in an australian amateur league

Here is the profile of Rory Kelly, while I didn't find any begian club playing in brugge in the third division . But Dylan Windust spoke in an interview about a kiwi friend playing in belgium and it might be Saric. At the end vicelic is an australian from the gold coast not a kiwi.

Here is another kiwi playing in germany, Danijel Duvnjak who is eligible for the 2012 olympics. Scored two goals this season.

He's a dad? got the right guy?
Yes, even on twitter you see him speak about christchurch earthquake. Also being a dad at the age of 21  is very possible!

Sry, but the SV Winnenden plays in the "Kreisliga".
They are at the end of the table(Place 15.).
The "Kreisliga" is the eleventh league in Germany.
Windust plays in the fifth league.
So I think Duvnjak isnt a really player for the U23.

How old is he though? He went over with Coey Turipa, who is now on the books with the champion team, not sure of the name though, Brisbane United I think. But Coey was not deemed to be playing at a high enough level for these threads.

In the following article, players born after july 1988 are sayed to be eligible for the olympics.I always thought that you have to be born after 01/01/1989 Can somebody confirm this info?? If confirmed, in addition of Reid and Fitzgerald, Michael Boxall and Cole Peverley would also be eligible!

You are right, from the FIFA London 2012 Regulations:

Mens Tournament
3. All players participating in the preliminary and final competitions of the
Tournament shall be born on or after 1 January 1989. However, a maximum of
three male players who do not meet this age limit may also be included in the
official list of players for the final competition.el grapadura2011-07-11 11:16:14
