Carl Zeiss Jena avoided relegation with a 4-0 win over 1860 Munchen in the final round.

They only finished 1 point above the drop zone.

Rogerson made 2 appearances off the bench July-August last year. His last match day squad followed in November.

Mostly injured since then sounds like, incl surgery.

One year to go on his contract.

Again from this week's Flying Kiwis.

"“Our FCC and Logan Rogerson are now going their separate ways. The 21-year-old New Zealander, who moved from Wellington in the summer of last year, Jena and the FCC have agreed to terminate his contract early. We wish Logan all the best for the future!”

He was only there a year but Logan Rogerson has asked out of his contract in Germany, leaving by mutual consent. The 21 year old was mostly a reserves player with Jena, only featuring for 54 minutes across two subs appearances for the side in the German third tier league. That was all at the start of the season too and there was an injury in the second half of things which would have added to the whole thing. It didn’t help that the coach and sporting director that brought him in didn’t last too much longer and the new brass wasn’t as keen on his potential, kinda isolating, him hence this decision has been made in the best interests of all involved.

So what’s next, Logan?

LR: “First of all, I'm in U23 New Zealand for a month. We want to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. That's my big goal. I hope I can stay in Germany afterwards. A few clubs have contacted me. We are in talks, but there is nothing concrete yet. But one thing is certain: I want to continue playing in Germany… The main thing for a footballer is to play. If a good regional league club comes to me and offers me a perspective, then that's a consideration. But: In football, many things change extremely fast. For example, when I was in Kiel, I hurt myself abruptly. So now I just look forward and want to make as many games as possible. You will see where that will be.”

Straight from the horse’s mouth, mate. We’ll see what happens with that Pacific Games squad now that Fritz Schmid’s gone but Rogerson is definitely one of those fellas in the mix for the Olympic qualifying squad later on. Along with a large selection of other top notch under-23 players. Following on from the deserved hype of that last U20 squad, this next Olympics effort will also be all sorts of exciting.

Up Next: Hopefully the Pacific Games"

I'm guessing Sweden. Seems to be the only European league that is starting soon which would explain him leaving before the final.

Best of luck to him. I think he has potential in the right system and coaches but on the balance of probabilities he'll probably be back here within 2 years.

He played a great game for ACFC this weekend. Always an interesting chap to watch as he constantly beats himself up when things don't go right. You seem him just scolding himself. Really hope the kid succeeds.

What's all the secrecy about his new club about? Unless he's signed for Real Madrid, that's pretty unusual isn't it?

New club probably wants him to pass medical etc before announcing.

ACFC had to make some sort of statement about him leaving given he was gonna miss the final, in other circumstances they would have likely held off announcing that until the new club was ready.

Last year's Finnish champions. Rogerson joins David Browne at HJK.
Veikkausliiga starts 25th April. 2 year deal.

Hopefully goes better than his stint in Germany.

HJK and Logan Rogerson , 22, from New Zealand  , have entered into an agreement for the period 2021. The agreement also includes a two-year option.

Through extensive background work based on the game data of HJK's scouting team, a player was found whose characteristics are close to those of David Browne  , who previously arrived at the Club from the same direction  . The same partner also helped make the transfer happen.

Wow really good move. Almost too good a club you would think... Not because he isn't good enough - but because it might be harder to establish himself in a team that is so good in its national league

I mean he did come right from Auckland City... a team pretty dominant in it's own national league.

I think 'formerly dominant in a now non existent league' would have been a better fit 😏

But excellent move for Rogerson. Good for New Zealand/AW's as well, after a glut of players heading to Europe over the past couple of years, there was a bit of a quiet period in terms of kiwi's making moves. Good to see another Kiwi lad in a professional environment.

Slight difference in the two leagues though I'd say. Still, he was recruited there meaning the coaching staff must rate him highly. All I was saying is it might be harder to get a shoe in. That being said, if he does crack the first team/get a good run of games, he'll be in an very attractive shop window.

From this week's Flying Kiwis.

One of the major narratives leading into the weekend’s Premiership Grand Final was the absence of Logan Rogerson for Auckland City after he’d scored 8 goals in 13 games to get them to that stage. Safe to say they missed his presence running in behind the defensive line too but that’s another story. Rogerson had picked up a pro opportunity in Europe that he initially was gonna take at the end of the Premmy season but then the season got pushed back by a week thanks to the ol’ lockdown and that was a little too late to change the plans so he missed out on that last game.

With that one in the bag though, the focus turned to where exactly he was off to. Initially “a professional opportunity in Europe” was all the crumbs we were left to feed upon, which led to the obvious speculation of Scandinavia given the impending start of their season. Now the riddle has been solved as Rogerson’s been unveiled as a new signing for HJK Helsinki in Finland.

The contract is for the 2021 season with a two-year option that the club can pick up if they like what they see. HJK Helsinki just so happens to be the biggest club in Finland. Reigning champs from 2020 with thirty league titles in their history, including nine of the last twelve. HJK is the only Finnish club to have competed in the Champions League (back in 1998-99) plus they also made the Europa League groups back in 2014–15. Every season they get a qualifying campaign in for one or the other competition (or both). They’ll enter the first round of UCL qualifying for next season’s tournament in the midyear.

It’s also the club that a previous Auckland City FC hero, David Browne, happens to play for. Papua New Guinea international Browne signed on the same terms out of ACFC (with his two year option taken up) and played 14 times on the club’s way to the league title last year. Rogerson has been identified as having similar attributes as Browney... though there is a bit of acceptance that he may need time to adjust to the league. Rogerson previously played professionally in Germany for Carl Zeiss Jena but injury meant that stint never really got going. Of course, playing in Finland also means he’ll come up against Nikko Boxall (SJK) a few times across the journey of the season too.

Miika Takkula, HJK's Director of Sports and Development: “Logan is a speedy and technically skilled wide player who brings depth to our attacking department. He comes to us from a different operating environment, so of course we have to give him time to adjust. At his best, he will able to produce a lot of team-helping games in the third quarter of the season, so we are confident about the future.”

HJK have already eased their way through the league cup group stage, albeit not without a few scares, with a draw and two wins – Browne started the latter two and game off the bench in the first game adding up to 147 minutes, scoring in a 6-1 win vs KTP to polish things off. The league season begins in a couple days. Not sure we’ll see Rogerson so soon but you never know.
(Also if you’re wondering the line that he says at the end of the video is: “On vain yksi Klubi”. Which the club mantra – e.g. You’ll Never Walk Alone – and it means: “There Is Only One Club”... the more you know!)

Flying Kiwis.

Nothing too fancy here, it was only a friendly game and there was a mostly rotated eleven involved as HJK continue to build towards the start of the league season (following on from a couple of comprehensive cup victories to take them into the final of the Suomen Cup)... but there was a significant moment with about ten minutes left when Logan Rogerson was subbed on for his first game in an HJK jersey. Not an official debut but still a milestone.

HJK won 4-0 against AC Oulu with three of the goals having been scored before half-time (and the fourth straight after it) so unsurprisingly by the time Rogerson got out there things had descended into a casual kick-around as teams awaited the final whistle. You only get a look at him from a distance on those highlights. The coach did say when Rogerson signed that they’d ease him in... but still this was an important step for him. Good to see. He also later played the first half of an academy game against FC Honka a few days later. Slowly getting those reps up.

Of course, Nikko Boxall is the other kiwi involved in the Finish top flight. He got ninety minutes with a yellow card in the Suomen Cup quarter final defeat against Inter Turku a couple weeks back – the same team that HJK would beat 4-0 in the semis.

Up Next: First game of the league season is at home to FC Honka at midnight on Anzac Day morning (NZT)

Hopefully there is a good reason (injury?) for why rogerson is playing in the reserve team. Finland top tier is not strong so it's a bit of a concern he hasn't cracked the first team.

Yeah he's been there 5 minutes, and HJK are the best team in Finland. Never easy to break into a winning side. Just wonder whether a more mid table club might have been a better initial choice.

HJK are strong by Finnish standards, but far from it by European standards. In their last 3 Europa League campaigns they've been knocked out by Latvian, Slovenian, and Macedonian opposition. That is...not good.
Logan is also about to turn 23. Playing Finnish reserve football at that age is not doing much for his professional career prospects.
