Likely packing his bags and not involved in a 0-0 draw vs Cremonese.
Reports suggest he's moving to Serie C on loan, but staying close to Turin (Novara or Pro Vercelli are in the lead for now).
Also, I read on LinkedIn that his dad is moving to France for good with his French wife (Matthew's mum) so he will have more support which can't be a bad thing. His brother is also reportedly playing in Italy which I need to investigate further.

Not in the match day squad in a 4-1 win vs Monza (friendly game). I did read somewhere that he was not in full training so could be recovering from an injury or could just be that he's on his way out.
No concrete news about his loan move to Serie C

Garbett not in match day 22 man squad. Time for that loan deal - Serie C or where ever.

Has barely played any senior men’s football, anywhere, his career to date. Time to change that

He only has about 150 more career senior club minutes than All Whites' minutes across his 12 international caps and if you add in the game-time at the Olympics, then that becomes 864 club minutes to 872 international minutes. If you break it down even further, about 500 of those club minutes are lower tier in Sweden or back in the ISPS before he went to Europe.

He's been at Torino for close to 18 months now, and has just the 9 minutes in the cup tie which they won 4-0 against lower league Cittadella. Being signed to a Serie A club sounds good, but if he's playing less than he would be if he was in Serie B/C, Austria, Switzerland or Slovenia then it's not beneficial. He's 21 in a couple months, so no longer a 'youth prospect', he needs to play every week. We saw in the previous World Cup cycle promising All Whites players be in big clubs' systems, but never really break through: Sam Brotherton at Sunderland, Adam Mitchell at Crvena zvezda, Monty Patterson at Ipswich, Deklan Wynne, Francis de Vries and Myer Bevan at Vancouver etc. Those guys probably weren't as regularly involved in matchday squads, but the (at least) 13-man Serie A benches also probably belie the situation compared to the 7-man benches of old.

Hopefully his absence is due to him completing a move elsewhere, as Torino didn't even fill their bench allotment, as Hellas Verona had a massive 13 on their bench, compared to Torino's measly 11. Ajdin Hrustic, who came off the bench for Australia against Tunisia, Denmark and Argentina got 5 minutes off the bench for Verona, as Torino came from behind to draw 1-1.

Actually I now note Soccerway had Garbett on a 13 man Torino bench for this game.

But semantics, it’s overdue time for a move to some level where he will be playing

Everything you said. Can't "this" this enough.
Another thing I will note is that the Torino manager, Ivan Juric, has actually thrown a few youngsters in the mix and given them opportunities, so it's not like we can blame it on an overly cautious manager. Matt must not be doing what he wants.
All I can say is that from what I've seen of him in an AWs shirt and in the fairly competitive Primavera league, that he looks a proper player. Room for improvement of course, but he needs a team that allows him to continue to develop and this means playing week in week out.

Will continue to keep an eye on the transfer news

He should go to France I reckon. Not sure where his family are from over there but he could do really well at a lower Ligue 1/higher Ligue 2 club like Metz, Troyes, Caen, Montpellier, Toulouse etc.

Needs to play senior football, plus it would be nice to tick another top 5 league off the list. All going well we could have Wood in the Prem, Libby in Serie A, Sarpreet in the BuLi and Garbett in Ligue 1. Would just need someone to crack La Liga then (Riley Peach at Barca surely 😂).

What worries me a bit is that the only transfer rumours are on the Torino website or some large newspaper/websites (who are probably fed information by Torino club officials). There is nothing about a possible move on the Facebook pages or websites of the teams allegedly rushing to get his signature...
Still 2 weeks to go so no major rush but I hope we get confirmation of a loan deal soon

According to some reports, one of Torino's starting midfielders is injured. They have two players there who are now locked into the CM position (and have the coach's faith) but as replacements there are 3 young players (including Garbett) with 8 senior caps between them.
So a chance may come up for Matt...
This might also explain why he hasnr left, the coach might want to keep him around for as long as possible just in case

Great news if so. He's played really well for the AWs last 12 months, but getting zero senior football in Italy. See on Breda's website they have already signed 4 new players this window, and either sent some players back to their youth team, or told them they are free to leave.
https://www.nac.nl/nieuws/vier-spelers-terug-naar-nac-o21-twee-spelers-buiten-de-groepstraining

They are a big club for the Eerste Divisie (Dutch 2nd tier) with a 19,000 seater stadium. Prior relegation in 2015,  they had 15 successive seasons in the top tier.  They currently sit 9th (but effectively 8th as 7th placed AZ II can't be promoted), and 8 pts off 4th placed Almere City (promotion playoff spots). Top 2 automatically promoted (looking like Thomas's Zwolle & Heracles).

Be nice if Garbett signed, quickly became a starter, Breda were promoted (long shot maybe) and made the move permanent from Torino.

Yeah but he might still have 2-3 guys ahead of him at Torino. He's only been on the pine for Torino's Serie A games because they carry 12 man benches.

He needs to be playing regularly. And that's far more likely in the Dutch 2nd tier (still a reasonable level) than Serie A. Even in Torino's 4-0 cup win over a Serie B side back in Oct last year, he only got a 10 min token cameo late on (his club debut). He doesn't appear close to getting much regular action at Torino.

It's only a potential half season loan deal. He's goes to Breda, plays well, they don't get promoted and he comes back to Torino closer to being Serie A ready. Or the Dutch like him enough to pay Torino, a nice transfer fee to make the move permanent.

Confirmed: Matthew Garbett is Joining NAC Breda on loan from Torino. 9th In the Eerste Divisie (Dutch Second Division). Seem to play a conventional 4-3-3, will be interesting to see where he fits in, wide or central?

Breda travel to Zwolle on 18th March. Hopefully by then Garbett is a starter for Breda, and we get a Kiwi matchup. The old midfield dog against the young pup. Both versatile players who don't score as much as we would hope! Early days of course for Garbett, but similar in a way.

A 20 yr old Thomas made a name for himself in the Dutch Cup, and next week Breda host top tier Heerenveen (Rojas's old club) in a Round of 16 tie.

https://www.nac.nl/nieuws/nac-huurt-matthew-garbett-met-optie-tot-koop

NAC HIRES MATTHEW GARBETT WITH AN OPTION TO BUY
The 20-year-old midfielder will come over from Torino FC on a rental basis until the end of the season. Matthew immediately joins the group training. NAC has stipulated an option to purchase.

Garbett played in New Zealand in his younger years, including in Wellington. In 2020 he was transferred to the Swedish Falkenbergs FF. After a year and a half in Sweden, he moved to Torino, where he was part of the Under 19 team. Last October he made his official debut in the first team of Torino FC. Nine minutes before the end, he came on in the Coppa Italia match against Cittadella.

NAC has a young midfielder who is comfortable on the ball in Matthew Garbett. Matthew likes to attack, but he is not afraid of defensive work either; a so-called box-to-box player.

At the age of 19 he made his debut with the New Zealand national team. He started in the starting line-up in the 1-2 win against Curaçao. To date, he has already played twelve international matches for New Zealand. B
ecause Matthew also has a French passport, he falls outside the non-EU scheme.

Welcome to NAC, Matthew.

Yes!!! Even though it's just till the end of the season for now, let's hope he gets the game time he needs and deserves. Hopefully Thomas doesn't pick up an injury close to the Breda vs Zwolle game and he and Garbett can have a nice chat after the game. Obviously through no fault of his own, Thomas is yet to play with Garbett in an AWs squad but I do wonder if they've perhaps talked over the phone at all in the time Garbett's been in the Netherlands.

There’s an age gap but both are ex Ole/Declan. Also there’s an AWs/overseas player WhatsApp group, so I’m sure easy enough to have a chat if Garbett wanted some advice about the league. But he likely left most of it to his agent. I think his folks now also live in France so plenty of support for him on the continent

He’s got young peers Stamenic, Bell & Just all nearby up north in Denmark

Yeah I did wonder if the significant age gap between them would be an obstacle. Still, like you said with the Zwolle vs Breda game, hopefully Garbett will be a starter by then and we can see him and Thomas up against each other.

2nd tier Holland.... fark me. Better than nothing I suppose.
There are many factors that determine success for a player at any given club and sometimes it just doesn't go well. Here's hoping he genuinely does have what it takes and a reset is all that is needed.

Enjoyed watching Libby play against Torino the other week. Guna enjoy seeing what coverage of Garbett is available. As a fan of players you want to see them play!

And hopefully he excels and Torino recall him or someone in that tier gives him a second look. I don’t think he’s so far behind Thomas or Singh as someone to drive a team from the midfield.
Hopefully he’s made contacts at Torino which help him later too.

Breda could also be promoted to the Eredivisie. They are currently 8 pts off Almere City (Michael Woud's old club) who sit in 4th a promotion playoff spot.

Breda are a big club for the Dutch 2nd tier (spent 15 consecutive seasons in top tier up to 2015) and appear to have made alot of new signings this Jan window. 8 pts is a big gap, but still a chance they could bridge it over the remaining 16 games to finish the season.

But the main thing is Garbett needs to be playing. He's only 20. Plenty of time to sign for a bigger club later, if he never 'makes it' at Torino.
