Last round ACL pool games.
Kofu (1st, 8 pts) travel to Thailand to play Arthur Papas's Buriram United (3rd, 6 pts).

Melbourne City (2nd, 8 pts) host Chinese club Zhejiang (4th, 6 pts). All 4 teams still in the race to progress to the next round.

No Woud in match day squad for Kofu. What for him in 2024 I wonder?
Still a year to go on his deal with parent club Kyoto Sanga (J1) from memory.

Kofu won 3-2 (3-0 up at HT), topped the pool, and go through to the next round. Great effort by a J2 side.

Melb City drew 1-1 with Zhejiang, conceding in the 99th min, to finish 2nd. Even with a win they would have been 2nd. They now await other results to see if they also go through to the next round.

So Woud won't get to feature for Kofu again in the ACL. Kofu have drawn Ulsan from Sth Korea, in the round of 16 (February).

What next for Woud? Still under contract at J1 club Kyoto Sanga. Mutual termination? Him, Sail & maybe Marinovic must all be strong GK options for Auckland FC.

He's had some clangers in a NZ shirt, but surely he's better than J3. Not forgetting Bazeley picked him twice in goal (Australia & Grrece) over the Oct & Nov windows (ALM keepers not picked).

I guess wherever he goes he wants to be the no 1 keeper, after barely playing the last 2 years. From Niche Cache.

Michael Woud: “First of all, thank you for your experience at Ventforet Kofu. I am sincerely grateful to all those who have supported me. I'm glad that I got the opportunity to participate and contributed to the team. Good luck to the future of Ventforet.”

Confirmation that Michael Woud’s loan at Ventforet Kofu has officially come to an end. The clock has run down and he’s now a Kyoto Sanga player again. But perhaps not for very long because KS had a club function recently in which it was strongly suggested that Woud would be leaving again by the fact that he no longer has a designated shirt number. Kyoto Sanga just signed another goalie so that’s a dead end for him. We already knew that though, didn’t we?

The rumour seems to be that J3 team Nara Kurabu are the frontrunners. That’s a long drop from J1 – even when he went to a J2 club on loan it was more so that he could play Asian Champions League.

Nara Kurabu did finish fifth in 2023 immediately after promotion and will have expectations of rising further up the pyramid, with a Spanish flavour to their coaching staff. Head coach Julián Marín Bazalo has specifically said that they want a few more transfers with goalkeeper being one of the main positions they’re targeting. If there’s any truth to that, we’ll find out in the coming days.

Auckland FC? The J3 (not great for his AWs prospects)? Something else?

Surely he'd almost be a certainty for Auckland FC?

There were a few guys floating playing at New Lynn etc who came to NZ from J3?
It’s hard to say that anything he’s done recently has suggested he’s an A league starter.

Apart from a bit of a gaffe against Greece, I thought he was okay in his AWs games last year.

Solid also when his J2 team played Melb City in the AFC CL.

Corica and McFlynn have had plenty of time to check him out

Didn't he also play 1 year as the starting keeper in the top dutch tier. I know he did a year or two in the second division.

You don't get that kind of opportunity unless you have something. He's also still very young as a keeper.

He's 25 now, so not that young. But yes his best years are hopefully in front of him.

He's made some bad howlers, but they have almost all been to balls along the deck. Surely that's something one can iron out with some good GHK coaching. Otherwise he has the attributes to be a good keeper. Good enough for the ALM anyway.

He only had 5 games in total with Willem II in the Eredivise, then 1.5 seasons in the 2nd tier Eerste Divisie with Almere City. Then Japan, which didn't work out for him at all.

Auckland FC not quite last chance saloon, but yeah he needs to consistently show those bad gaffes are out of his game. Look at Matt Crocombe it's taken him to age 27-30 to have a couple of consistently good back to back seasons.
