Monty Patterson (Hønefoss BK | Norway)
Braintree Town. He must be good then.
So the Nix get to pick up the All Whites who are not good enough for Hudson's Colorado?
(although I'd love to be proved wrong on this view)
Is he really better than Parkhouse?
Parky, while a terrible defender, is a decent a league squaddie and has moments of capability. Very one footed, and hasn't been the greatest finisher. However, quick, can dribble, can counter, can cross sometimes and the left peg is a decent one.
What have we seen of Monty at A-league or above?
Sorry, but Parkhouse is very limited - how he has got this far as a winger whose job is to cross a ball with effectively one leg is beyond me.
Playing him on the left just helped him to hide the fact - now its know, watch every defender in the league push him onto his right.
Other negatives include: his abiity to butcher golden chances when shooting - inability to header, inability to beat a man, inability to defend and inability to grow a beard.
Patterson, from what I have seen with the AW is a far busier player, better off both feet and technically a lot sharper. The only area he might lack a little is pace - but we have that in the team already, we just need players who can release it. Personally I think he has a lot of parallels to Rojas.

Parkhouse is way below a squaddie, he is crap.
Parkhouse is a known quanity, has never really set the world on fire, Aussie
Patterson still is in the 'potential' bucket, Kiwi
I know which one I'd want.

In what way is he parallel to Rojas? He has no pace and haven't seen him dribble past anyone before.

But, apart from that?
is he short?
Patterson routinely took on and beat players at the U20WC and if you read the various article about him when he signed at Ipswich they all talked about his technical ability.
Rojas came from the NZFC - Patterson is at least coming in from a pro environment.
When he has played for the All Whites he has genuinely looked like one of the few players in the team who actually prefers the ball on the deck.
i really hope you prove correct,
From what I see of Patterson they are chalk and cheese
Once again I hope I am wrong so let's see

We need more players who meet this criteria
I thought Patterson did ok last night. This is a step up for him, I think he could become pretty decent

i didn't mind watto. like anyone, he needed regular games and some sort of plan around him. but yeah, i agree with your assessment

I did not see Patterson stray into an offside position last night.
Patterson lacks the pace to play out wide; a bit concerning.

This occurred to me too. When he was chasing the ball most of the time he lost out to the Perth defense.
Thought he looked busy and wanted the ball at feet - happy with that.
the pace thing is an interesting one and it does limit his options and the fact that he is right footed probably means that he has to play on the left as an off the shoulder type wide striker, rather than as a winger on his natural side.
he's a striker not a winger yeah?

He was on for 45 minutes and I don't recall a single offside...
In seriousness, I think Watto could have delivered more with consistent game time, same as many of the younger players. Ridenton was one of the lower rated youngsters and through lack of injuries and necessity he has got some good minutes and now look. Hopefully Patterson gets similar chances.
I thought Monty worked really hard, but I'm not convinced he is suited to play where he was deployed. Then again, he's not really a big target man either, so it's up to the coach to find him a spot where he can score or create chances for others.

He actually prefers to play behind the striker or on the wing. Basically in the 3 of a 3-1
Confirmation that he has been released by Ipswich http://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/ipswich-town-release-m...
Can't see us signing him...Did OK in the last game prior to injury though.
He's cheap, a kiwi and better than parkhouse

I agree with the kiwi part of it
I'm going to go back in this thread and find out whom when he was signed compared him to Rojas
He did okay for about 30 minutes when he played centrally as an attacking mid, but just looked slow and definitely didn't seem up to standard
Going from almost scoring in a match against Crystal Palace in the FA cup to playing semi pro football and now he is released in the same season.
I'd sign him. He has a lot of promise

sorry but we don't need (or have time for) players with a lot of promise, we need players that can perform straight away
also from what I've seen of him. I don't agree with you

Regardless of whether Patterson is up to the standard or not, the idea that the Nix should not be signing young New Zealanders that have potential/promise is ridiculous.

Yes we should be signing Kiwis with good potential but we already have Cacace and Singh in that category. While I have no opinion on Patterson being great or otherwise, I am not sure how many more promising Kiwis we should be signing right now instead of a few more experienced campaigners that we would need to steady our leaky boat. We cannot be just banking on Kiwi youth alone while we still have the license. Finishing the season higher than CCM is not a bar I consider high enough for us, regardless of how many seasons we have left.

I agree - if we won't take a chance on young kiwis I don't know what the point of the Phoenix is

The point of the Phoenix is to provide a pathway that promising kiwis aspire to
