FC Porto, currently on loan, mother is a Kiwi.   Midfielder.  Tried to loan him to Villarreal last year but it fell through.  Been a professional for 5 years.  Played for Portuguese U21.

Picking up from a comment on the Winston Reid thread, if the above information is correct then this is an avenue well worth taking.

Yes it could be an interesting option for Ricki Herbert to complete his midfield, especially with MLS maybe going on strike. In this case, Elliott and Oughton might be out of form for the world cup...

Gourdie, time to work your magic again.

Very interesting indeed.  I think this is well worth a look.  Does anyone here actually know Gourdie?  Someone point this in his direction.

If it is true... then this could be hiuge for us.

Breaking into the Portugal national side will not be easy and he may never make it... e.g Arteta and Spain, so this could be his only real chance to play international football and make the WC.

The WC should be a huge carrotm with him on loan he'd probaly like being put out in the largest football shopping window there is.

And we need a quality CM, big time!!

LOL that's what I was thinking, I'm guessing his English is "limited."

Who cares if he speaks English or not lol. I'd imagine we'd cop a bit of flak from the foreign media if we played a guy with a name like that! Wonder what name he'd want on his shirt? Nuno, Miguel, Prata or Coelho?

Who is Gourdie??? Is it a journalist or somebody who knows Herbert?
Actually I have no problem to trust the info because his father is originally from Timor Leste(Portuguese colony) which is close geographically from NZ.

Timor Leste may not be too far from NZ but I wouldn't believe it based on that.  Looks somewhat suspicious (to say the least) but would be awesome if it was true.

He's definitely got a Kiwi look (if this is actually him??). Hilarious.

Hey if we edit Mikel Arteta's wikipedia page so that he has NZ parentage too can we get him to play for us?

If there is a possibility it is true we must look into it. Simple if not, what will it cost us, a couple long range phone calls??

If someone tole me they were talking to a guy over facebook about playing for nz and getting positive feedback i'd think it a laugh... oh thats right it worked.

Why can't this turn out the same?

I think we should call every decent player who hasn't played international football yet. Surely they're eligable too.

Three for me, and two for them.
