Hmm well I don't know the standard of S-League - seen a couple of highlights and it didn't look very flash. TBH NZFC looks at least as good. Not as good as the A-League.

But Paul is the vice captain of his side and has started 9 out of 11 games so he must have something there. Would be nice to see video of him to judge.

Paul Cunningham of St Frances Douglas High - New Plymouth and Palmerston North Boys' High School. He played for NZ Schools on their tour of Europe around 2003.

He spent 1 or 2 years in the Middlesborough youth academy before returning back to NZ.

He played NCAA Div 1 Big East football for West Virginia University making the top 16 (Maybe top 8) in 2007ish along with Jarrod Smith and another Kiwi Mitch Snowden.

After leaving there he tried his luck in England to no success and found himself in Perth but managed to get contacts to Singapore. He is a big strong lad who can win headers galore. He'll love being 5ft taller than all the little asian boys. Although by the looks of it there are a quota of foreign players in each team.

He can't be doing too bad consindering we ram Darante and Paul is now playing for the same team Darante has played.

Review of Balestier's last match a week ago (highlighting Cunningham's contribution). Sounds like he's doing real well. Though his team are struggling somewhat.
They have a long season- 9 months from Feb to Nov.
Balestier are also in the Singapore Cup quarterfinals.

"A late deflected free kick from Chun Jae Woon was enough to clinch a fifth consecutive league victory for Home United, as they edged a stubborn Balestier Khalsa side 1-0 at Toa Payoh Stadium on Thursday evening....
With 85 minutes of the match gone, the Tigers had repelled everything their visitors had thrown at them, with New Zealander Paul Cunningham a colossus in the heart of defence....
...The latter would have the first effort on goal on 18 minutes, after an excellent chip from Chun into the penalty area found him. However, Cunninghams timely intervention would take the power out of Juns shot, with keeper Ahmadulhaq Che Omar gathering the loose ball...
...Just a minute later, Cunningham was called upon again to deny Chun for the second time in the match. Substitute Shahdan Sulaimans low cross was arrowing towards the Korean in the penalty area, but Cunningham arrived just in time to scramble the ball behind...
First up was the impressive Cunningham, who got his head onto Poh Yi Fengs corner on 89 minutes, only for Protectors keeper Lionel Lewis to hold on to his firm header

If he turns himself into a RB then he may have a chance. Has a bit of competition at CB.

Musa isn't a centre back.

Three for me, and two for them.

According to the Asian papers- he is a central defender.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

As I understand it, Cunningham was not trialing for an A-league contract (he is under contract in Singapore with Balestier Khalsa FC) I believe he was playing so Herbert can consider him for national selection in the near future. If New Zealand don't make a move and get this young defender capped Singapore will without a doubt attempt to push for his citizenship to nationalize him to play for them.

I could be wrong but the A-League would be doing quite well to entice the lad to play with the kind of remuneration this caliber of player is on in.

China is a perfect chance to filter some of these players in, it will be interesting to see if Herbert does give some youngsters who deserve it a crack.

Do you think that Paul Cunningham and Kayne Vincent, after all the overseas experiences that they had, have the level to play for an A league team like the phoenix? Cunningham already played one game for the reserve last season, so Herbert might have some interest to sign him for next season

The S-League season doesn't finish until November so there's a bit of overlap there for Cunningham. Ricki obviously knows about him so I guess it wouldn't be out of the question. Apparently he played well in the game he had for the reserves. No idea on Vincent.
