Jeremy Christie trialed in Nov. 2009 with Paul Cunningham for the 2010 S-League Season; Jake Butler and David Mulligan trialed in Nov. 2010 for the 2011 S-League Season. I don't think any of  these players were offered contracts. Judging by this, maybe Cunningham does have the level to play for an A league team and even the All Whites.

Ian Ferguson of Glory been spotted in the crowd at recent game/games. By all accounts he wants the kid.very odd that NZ national coach has not shown much interest.. if he is good enough to be considered as a foreigner in the A-League wouldnt you think he would be a shoe-in for the Phoenix. I am curious does anyone know if he actually has been offered anything by them and maybe he has turned it down, there must be more to it. that does not explain national duty though??

S League not great League, NZFC level.  I think until he starts playing A-League he will be off the radar joining the likes of James, Old, Bright etc.

With central defenders Paul Cunningham and Goran Subara impressive at the back, Ruhaizad Ismail's cool finish past Sasa Dreven in the 85th minute proved enough for a classy Balestier to claim all three points, and leave Tampines, in the wake of their opening 2-2 draw away at Brunei DPMM, still looking for their first win of the new Great Eastern-YEO'S S.league season.

Heard Cunningham has signed again for Ballestier, looks like it's a good team with only Cunningham and three others retained from Last year's squad.  They also have a new coach, Australian, Darren Stewart.

Have just read the article on espnstar.com. If we are looking to build a strong defensive unit for the next World Cup, then surely Cunningham needs to at least be given a chance to prove himself in the All Whites.

agreed.

ideally we'd all like our players to be plying their trade in Europe's top leagues, but that doesn't mean there aren't quality players in the less-illustrious competitions.

especially if it's someone like Cunningham who's a star in the S.League, then surely he deserves a chance to show what he's capable of at international level at the very least.

Yet to be convinced. Who do we replace him for? You've got such depth in the defence at the moment that even the MLS boys aren't getting a look in.

Agreed. Its nice to know he's there if we have a horrendous run of injuries or suspensions though

If herbert had taken 22 players instead of 18, Boyens and Boxall would have been selected for the AW's

Was fortunate enough to catch Cunningham in action a few weeks ago while in Singapore on business. They played Tampines Rovers (Defending League Champions who earned a spot in the AFC Cup both this year and last). Donning the armband Cunningham was a rock and deserves a lot more credit than is given to him. He has a cultured left foot and did not lose anything in the air. Tampines's strike force consisted of 2 internationals just to put things into perspective one Singaporean in Duric and the other a Macedonian Gligorov.

He would quite easily walk into Lochhead's spot in a second if given the chance. and slot in to the centre half position if needed. Friendlies are where we can try things out and give someone a chance that is a lot closer to home then our European based players and would seriously not disappoint..

Is he a left fullback then? For some reason I thought he was yet another central defender. In that case give him a run, we need more options out left

Lochhead
Prattley
Milne
Hogg
Rowe

We need Right back options more.  Can he convert?

If he's that good why is he still playing in Singapore which is hardly known as a high end league?

None of that list are anywhere near the same level as our central options though, and well I'd accept that Lochhead is better than him I wouldn't automatically assume any of the others would be. Although there's also the option of playing Smith out there too...

Balestier's defence managed to shut out Canadian Midfielder, Jordan Webb, in their game against Hougang United.  Balestier won 1-0.

Watching that video footage, I'd say that the S League looks Northern League, ASB Premiership at best.

Deep into injury-time, the visitors did manage to get the ball into the back of the net when Cunningham once again put his aerial strength to good use by outjumping Dreven before lashing home the loose ball but this time, they were denied by the whistle as referee Abdul Malik Bashir called for a foul on the Stags custodian.
