📖 | Getting to know Rebecca Lake
— Wellington Phoenix 🔥 (@WgtnPhoenixFC) August 6, 2023
Canterbury defender Rebecca Lake was unveiled as Paul Temple’s first new signing for the upcoming ALW season
Here are five things to know about Rebecca Lake 👇
A very good fullback I've rated highly for several years.
Physically strong and reads the game really well.
Definitely one I would have rated as Phoenix material.
Shows that Temple's scouting is pretty good.
The squad is shaping up nicely.....

Not good news for Rebecca. Is she an Auckland? Wonder if she will join Auckland FC since her contract was only for one season.

She's a Cantab, so I can't see her having too many loyalties lying that far north

Cool, didn’t take long to find a new club. Pity is only about 6 games to go in regular season then finals. Season runs April-Nov with a number of Kiwis in this Canadian League
Maybe Lake can get a ALW gig after Nov.
Problem is there will be 20 odd free agent Western United players also now looking for a new job

Posted on Insta that she's signed a pro deal in Vietnam

Seems strange that she'd leave after becoming an important player in Vancouver winning the title last November.

Lake was straight in to the matchday team on arrival and came on as a sub after 57 mins in her first game on Sept. 14 in a 7-0 loss.
Vancouver improved after Lake arrived - they shipped ten goals in the first two games she was in the matchday squad (with Lake only getting the 33 mins in that first game and not appearing in the second).
Once Lake was starting every game from her third game onewards, Vancouver's record was W:2 D:2 in their remaining four regular season games.
That took them to the league semis where they defeated Ottawa over two legs with Lake starting both legs.
Lake played the full 90 in the final, beating Toronto 2-1.
Maybe it was a question of being paid more in Vietnam?
Her profile must have risen after winning the title in Canada.

I believe she was intending to play NPL before the Vietnam contract popped up as a opportunity, it wasn't a case of going from Canada to Vietnam.
I dont think the Canadian League is particularly strong or high profile (I assume below the quality of ALW but cant say Ive watched - happy to be corrected) and most women's footballers at that level have to supplement income somehow - sitting around for an offseason isnt really affordable for many.

Rebecca Lake debuted for Thai Nguyen on her 27th birthday and almost got a goal to show for it... until it was credited as an OG instead
But they did at least give her some cake and a party hat🎂#FlyingKiwis pic.twitter.com/cDWlwyUBck
