if toronto has soo much money to splash out on players, how come they didnt sign a qualified coach? maybe theres something they know about nelsens ability that we dont.

Don't discount the value of Ryan's connections in the Premier League etc. to Toronto which allowed him to convince Defoe to come to Toronto (and captain Steven Caldwell from Birmingham last year). Ryan also knows a lot of major players' agents and has "off-field connections" which according to this report enabled him to snap up top Brazilian striker Gilberto from Internacional:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/soccer/source-toronto-fc-lands-brazilian-gilberto-in-bid-to-boost-offence/article15953600/

“A great coup for the club,” said Nelsen, whose off-field connections helped cut through the red tape of dealing with Brazil.

It’s also a coup for the North American league, which in the past has had to settle for aging overseas stars.

Gilberto is young, has played at a high level and comes with solid credentials. MLS fans should see him flourish rather than fade...."

So Toronto will have a Brazil World Cup player on their roster!
I saw a Brazilian pundit say the other day that Scolari prefers Cesar as his number one. Has been in the Brazil squad for friendlies the last six months. Jefferson to be number two apparently.
It's great the way Ryan can tap up his former team-mates at QPR and Spurs. Charismatic dude!

it speaks volumes for the guy, great stuff

so far i'm enjoying my stint as a toronto fc supporter, even last year's struggles were really cool to follow

it was admiral (pardon the pun) how nelsen consolidated the team into an effective defensive unit

With the squad he has he will need to get results early to convince the owners they have the right man. That been said, they probably realise that without him they probably would never have got Defoe and others.

they'll get results.  he's going about things the right way, unlike many doomed teams in the epl that bring in 20 players in the off season, he already has a defensive base.  he's improved that with bradley in midfield and has added quality to the attacking third

currently 2-0 up away at Seattle, Defoe already off the mark. Looking good

2 - 1 result, good start to the season, both goals by Defoe

Just won 1-0 against DC United with Defoe bagging another.

Great start for Toronto.

First time that we've EVER won our first two games of the season. The Seattle win was a total suprise - they've always beat us there. Hope we can keep going like this!

To be fair- Cesar, Caldwell, Bradley, Defoe.

Now that's a spine that wouldn't shame some EPL teams.  Defoe and Brockie up front right anyone?

Has there been any talk of Brockie coming back to Toronto?  Just curious.  I know there was talk of him coming back to us when he left to go back to NZ last year, but we've heard nothing since then.

Highly unlikely now considering Brockie's very poor form for the Phoenix this current season. Relegated to the bench mostly and hasn't seen many minutes the last few months. Has looked as likely to score as a eunuch in a bordello.

LOL, ok not likely then.  Wonder why he had such a bad season with the Nix.  He only scored once with TFC, but set up some lovely assists, so not bad overall in the time he spent here.

We'll swap you Brockie for Defoe

Shhh, Pete. You're meant to say he's been amazing and we sure hope that no other club comes and tries to buy him ;)

I think it might be more realistic to hope they will take him if we give him away. He's been so good they dont need to pay us anything for him! We dont want to stifle Brockies journey to the top

The loan fucked Brockie for this season. Guy never really had a break. Needs one

isn't that what he uses the 89 minutes in a game to do?

Totally agree - same thing happened to Danny McBreen at CCM who was out on loan in China and was pants on returning. His loan even extended a few games into the early A-League season. And now he's buggered off to China for good.
Both last season's top-scorers seem to have been stuffed by loan deals...bad for the league as well as their clubs....

Nice ten minute video feature "Toronto Rising" with interviews with the Toronto President, Bradley, Defoe, Cesar + match footage of first game vs. Seattle including Defoe's goals and behind-the-scenes in the locker room at half-time and post-game with Ryan:

http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2014/03/27/rebuilding-toronto-fc-mls-insider-chronicles-events-ryan-nelsens-hiring-mich?utm_source=TWIMEmail&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=Hero&utm_campaign=03282014

Could have three World Cup players come June - and Bradley and Cesar are likely to be starting for USA and Brazil. With this kind of goal-scoring form and lack of proven international goal-scorers (apart from Rooney) for England, Defoe must have a good chance not only of making the squad but getting playing time.

Guess MLS will continue during the World Cup? That will affect Toronto a lot if they lose their three key players for a month. Even if the USA and England don't make it out of the group stage, the players will still be with their national teams the whole of June.

Maybe he means Drake?

haha but seriously, Drake came out and said recently that he was the key to getting Defoe signed, as they were already good mates.
