This conversation has probably been had before but does anyone else find it odd that Toronto have spent such an absurd amount on players, but have a bargain basement coach? He's the Roberto Di Matteo of the MLS!

He is a massive reason why they got Defoe. What he lacks in coaching credentials he makes up with his footballing contacts.

Fair enough, but you don't need to be the head coach to use those footballing contacts though, that could just as easily happen if he were assistant. Not suggesting he doesn't deserve to be there or isn't doing a good job, I love Nelsen as much as the next guy. I just think it's interesting how much of a disparity there is between the calibre of player and calibre of coach (at least at face value).

It is interesting - likely because he was recruited prior to there being a huge investment in players.

Anyway, great opportunity for him.

Roberto Di Matteo actually had something of a decent coaching background before becoming coach...! Had been with West Brom and all...

A fair number of TFC fans are questioning the fact that Ryan had zero coaching experience when he came to Toronto.  In the end, it's all about results. If we don't make the playoffs this year, I'm not sure that he'll be staying on.

Today's game vs Montreal will be massive. Also, TFC will be playing Columbus on the 9th at 7:30 EST.  That game will be equally, if not even more important. Columbus is right behind us in the standings, so it's a six point game.

Oduro has looked very good for them recently. I think all the left backs in the MLS would be a bit nervous to play Toronto at the moment.

He has been a great mid season pick up for them, no one can keep up with his pace and he draws so many yellow cards when they keep dragging him down.

A good breakaway goal by Gilberto put Toronto up 2-1 in the 79th minute against Chicago. However, Chicago just equalised with time almost up.

Fulltime 2-2.

Toronto didn't make up as much ground as they could have from their games in hand on the top sides. Now nine points adrift of Sporting KC with one game in hand:

He'll want more than the players.

Nelsen to buy an A - League liscence and start his own Auckland Franchise.

Interested reading the comments on their Facebook page, seems support is mixed but more support for Nelsen that not. That could be because they are near playoffs and it seems a silly time to be changing coaches.

I'm an optimistic pessimist.
I'm positive things will go wrong.

The timing of this move is atrocious. And now it sounds like we may be losing Jermaine Defoe too.  In terms of "was this out of the blue?" I'd say that if we hadn't made the playoffs, nobody would have been suprised by Nelsen being fired. This happening, now, however is a surprise.
Last week we found out that the GM of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (who own TFC), Tim Leiweke was leaving. Leiweke was a massive supporter of Ryan's. When we heard that Leiweke was leaving, Ryan's leaving at the end of the season was more of a distinct posssibility.  The rift between Ryan and Bezbatchenko (TFC's GM) only became really obvious after last night's game.
There were signs of unhappiness with the players who were starting to shout at each other and look totally unorganized.

None of this bodes well for us. We are now on to our 9th coach since 2007. The team is an epic mess.

Many of us will miss Ryan, and wish him all the best!!

Will be interesting to see Nelsen's next move. Iirc he still doesn't have all his coaching badges does he?

So the boy wants to show he's the boss. I hope TFC turn to even more crap just so he gets to be shown up for what he is. Nelsen will get another job and show he is on the right track. Defoe could end up at QPR but if so I hope it is only for pay as you play as he is too injury prone.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I wonder if this had happened a few months earlier whether he would've applied for the All Whites gig..

I think he was doing the right thing and trying to isolate his players from the politics, however the comments themselves seem pretty minor. Much more going on in the background obviously.

10 game guest stint at the Nix on the cards?

I really hope he gets a gig somewhere else. Could be a very good coach given time to develop I think. Wonder if he'll look for another gig in in MLS, or try his luck with a British lower league team. I hope he doesn't end up in Asia.

Doesn't have the required qualifications.

If he is serious about coaching, he should now be looking at getting his licenses.
