After watching him recently, his far too good for PEC, really feel like he could cut it in a higher league

He's shown the way for every NZ kid who wants it enough.

He didn't have that good of a season for PEC this past season though. 33 appearances (31 in the league), 1 goal and 6 assists. I'm not sure how you can think he belongs in a higher league when he didn't do that well this season.

A lot of those games were as a sub and him coming back from what was a pretty injury plagued season. Not to mention the whole team struggled.

First saw him playing under Declan as a small kid with a good touch. He's now a hell of a lot more than just a bigger kid with a good touch, he's an athlete who seeks to impose himself on every game. It's a mental thing. Not enough Kiwi kids have it. Not in football anyway.

Just my opinion.

Do you know if Ryan Thomas has any passport beyond a NZ one?

I know he sacrificed an awful lot. Right player with the right coach I guess too.

Great shot of him here (from the Ole site) toe to toe with Porto's/Mexico's Hector Herrera

Would love to see him in the Serie A, this league is all about pace and skill. It would really suit him and would give him such a great opportunity.

Serie A all about pace and skill? I'm not sure that's right. The pace seems slower than other major leagues and games are more often tactical battles

I don't know if that stereotype still holds true, the Serie A had the most goals per game out of the big 5 leagues in Europe.

That doesn't mean there's an emphasis on pace and/or skill though. I watched a few Serie A games this season and I didn't get that impression. The quality of defending has definitely dropped and there's a few blowouts

Thomas extends with Zwolle until mid 2019. Thoughts?

Odd. Surely can get a contract at a better club. Hope theres a relegation clause

I think is a case similiar to the Reid one. He can play in a better side but prefers to stay where is sure he will be a starter

I don't watch Thomas much and I assume that is the same as most people. Having said that, his goals per game isn't so much that he screams someone who should be playing in a higher league. Obviously this is football and simply a number of goals/assists is not very telling. I'm just not sure that other clubs would really be racing to sign him.

Looked through the last 50 or so PEC Zwolle Instagram posts, the top three in terms of likes have all been about Ryan Thomas. Seems the fans adore him, why not stay where you're a hero?
How do you know this? Is there function on Instagram which tells you what the most popular posts are?
over 8 years ago · edited over 8 years ago · History

Nah, just scrolled through them all and checked the numbers. There's one announcing Thomas' new contract, one talking about his friendly debut, and another announcing that Ryan Thomas is back training for the club after the Confeds, they're the account's 3 most liked posts as far back as i could be bothered to scroll ;)     edit: I missed an entire club photo with quite a few likes, so it's only 3 out of the top 4 now (however Thomas' contract extension is still the most liked by a long way). The caption Zwolle made  with the club photo asks what fans' favourite player in the team is, I'm seeing quite a few Thomases.

Not sure if it has been mentioned but former Melbourne City manager John van’t Schip is now in charge at Zwolle. Heard a few whispers that Marco Rojas could be about to join - over in Holland right now.

Would be great to see Rojas have another crack at Europe. I reckon he would go okay in the Dutch League. If he got train/play day in day out, with Thomas that would be an added bonus for AWs.

Hopefully Thomas's consistency, determination and physicality (for a slight guy) would rub off on Rojas. Fingers crossed rumour comes to fruition.

Agreed. Most exciting NZ football rumour I've heard in a while.

Looks like he's playing a little deeper - similar to his role for NZ.

It's easy to forget that he is still only 22 - he's got a long career ahead of him still, I think it was the right decision to stay.

Yeah at the base of the midfield, deep lying playmaker? Was involved quite a bit in the highlights too, good to see.
