The good news continued for Herbert as star striker Shane Smeltz returned for Perth Glory in their 1-1 draw at Adelaide.  Smeltz was injected into the match in the 68th minute to break the deadlock but the returning All White was unable to steal the match for the Glory.

Channel 9 sports news Perth had a story saying Perth Glory are trying to release Smeltz from his contract which has a year to run.

It also stated that he was on $400,000 per season and that his family were living in Brisbane.

Not to mention the fact Smeltz doesn't like living anywhere for longer than two years... just gets too boring after a while.

Perth have clearly been trying to cut costs for a while.  All that money spent on that team with Ferguson in charge.  What a waste.  If Perth get the mix right with manager and players they could be brilliant though - such a tough place to go

I agree with the ref, was certainly the ball that left that boot shaped wound on his forehead.

Smeltz needs up to six weeks to recover from latest facial injury

By: AAP | Latest News | Friday March 29 2013 18:44

All Whites striker Shane Smeltz believes he needs up to six weeks to recover from his latest facial injury but says he will return to playing duties next week if the Perth Glory reach the A-League finals.

Smeltz required 15 stitches to his forehead last week after copping an errant boot while playing for New Zealand in their World Cup qualifier against New Caledonia.

The star Kiwi will miss Saturday night's crunch clash with Adelaide, but says he will play on through the discomfort if Glory sneak into the finals.

Perth will be guaranteed a spot in the finals if they beat Adelaide.

But if Newcastle Jets fail to gain maximum points from Friday night's home match against Western Sydney, then Glory will only need a draw to secure sixth spot.

Smeltz has become somewhat accustomed to facial injuries over the past year.

In last season's grand final against Brisbane, Smeltz required around 50 stitches to his lip and nose after being hit by a stray elbow.

Smeltz will have his latest set of stitches taken out on either Monday or Tuesday.

And although the gash will limit his ability to head the ball, he is determined to play if Glory squeeze into the finals.

"It's not going to be healed up for probably four to six weeks," Smeltz said on Friday.

"It's pretty tender, but all the swelling has gone out of it, and next week should be fine.

"It's just frustrating because it's on a bad position on the head.

"If it was the side of the head or the top it would be all right.

"But knowing me, first five minutes I'll probably have a header and split it open again."

Although rumours are building that Smeltz may seek a move away from Glory at the end of the season, the German-born Kiwi said he had no plans to leave the club and would serve out the final year of his contract.

Perth will be without a number of key players against Adelaide, with Liam Miller (suspended), Travis Dodd (knee), Chris Harold (calf) and Smeltz all unavailable.

The return of skipper Jacob Burns from suspension and defender Michael Thwaite from Socceroos duties comes as a welcome relief, but new coach Alistair Edwards says he is seriously considering handing 16-year-old midfielder Danny de Silva his first start.

"He's no longer a little baby any more," Edwards said.

"He's got two games under his belt and he's the kind of guy that thrives on this atmosphere."

The Glory are hoping for a crowd of around 18,000 after handing out almost 10,000 free tickets to soccer clubs around Western Australia.

Fourth-placed Adelaide are already guaranteed a home elimination final, but will be aiming to finish the regular season on a positive note after recording just two wins from their past 10 games.

Had a pretty poor game. Missed the penalty and had a great chance 10 minutes earlier to seal the game.

Not a great game to have when there has been rumours the coach wants to remove him from their wage bill.

Shane has had a down year this year but the last 5 have been very good. I guess when you perform at such a level, you eventually have to have a lull. You can't always be up.

Will he bounce back up next year? I hope so, but then it could well be the beginning of the end being 31.

Grumpy old bastard alert

They have said they are willing to listen to offers for him but won't be letting him go to another A-League club.

Not sure he really fits the style the new coach wants to play.

Smeltz has stated in his sunday article that he is going to complete his last year of his contract at Glory.

No offence to him but he has said things in the past which he didn't necessarily follow through with.

I guess it depends on what Nicky wants to do.

I don't know if professionals run a fines system, but if they do I hope Smeltzy gets an automatic "under the thumb" every week.

The All Stars will debut against Manchester United at ANZ Stadium, Sydney, on 20 July this year but there is a good chance that fellow All White star Marco Rojas also won't be involved.

Former Melbourne Victory player Rojas is more than likely to be at a German Bundesliga club. But two other New Zealanders, Michael McGlinchey of the Central Coast Mariners and Shane Smeltz of the Perth Glory, have ben voted as two of the best 35 players by fans

Which takes him through to mid October at the earliest.....which is less than a month before the WC playoffs and no match time. IMO he would be well behind Wood for a start. Mind you get the feeling that Ricki will pick him no matter what.

I'm questioning why the need for an operation hasn't been picked up until now when Shane's not played since the first week of April - something like 14 weeks of off-season.
Are the Perth medical staff incompetent?
If he'd had an op in April, he'd be fit again by now...
Will he really be match fit by October when A-League kicks off or even November for the All Whites?
Hip surgery usually requires a long recuperation and physio.
