Not sure about that. I thought it was definitely to do with the 'transfer' of the player.

"3. Players may be registered for a maximum of three Clubs during the period from 1 July until 30 June of the following year. During this period, the player is only eligible to play in Official Matches for two Clubs."

Think we were both kinda right.  Not sure if two spells at GCU constitutes two clubs.  Either way, I don't think the registration fro CHina was complete anyway.

Ok cool thanks for sourcing that. So if he had played a game for China it might have made things a little different perhaps. Altho your point about 2 stints at GC might only count as 1? It shouldn't IMO.

Does this damage his chances of playing anywhere else but the GC again? If I was a manager I would certainly see him as a risk to buy. Maybe this is why he didn't do that well when he first went to the UK, he is a home boy and needs a 'home environment' to function best.

He wont be playing outside the A-League again thats for sure. If you cant make it in Turkey or China id say youre pretty much done and nobodies going to be interested, unless he can do something miraculous like haul in a 30 goal bag next season or something... but its hard to see anyone abroad being genuinely interested in him now.

But hey its one thing to not be playing regularly in the EPL, but not playing regularly in Turkey is a bit of a downer. Its a good league, just not worth sitting on the bench for imo.

I agree. Smeltz is a good goal scorer. That is not the same thing as being a good player.
To me he has always been overrated. He has had numerous chances in the UK etc. and has not made it.This latest episode just proves that to me.
He will be OK at the GC as they have players that will be able to srt him up.
I can't remember, but I don't think he played well against us?

The guy's just prolific.  Six in seven games for GCU now.  Break the bank to get him back.

Double in the elimination game against Adelaide. First was a screamer from well outside the box  leftfield into the top right hand corner. Second was a penalty which he had to take twice because Djitee (or however you spell it) was encroaching. Good to see him playing well before China and Japan.

The play where he setup Porter to run on into the goal for the penalty was sublime. He looks a class above this level, always amazes me that he failed in Turkey.

Asian Cup could entice Smeltz to stay

A PLACE in the Asian Champions League could prove to be a key bargaining chip in United's bid to keep World Cup striker Shane Smeltz on the Gold Coast.

While United must overcome the Central Coast Mariners before they can even think about the champions league, Gold Coast chief executive Clive Mensink said the lure of taking on Asia's best could entice the off-contract Smeltz to stay next season.

"I think (qualifying for the Asian Champions League) would help," said Mensink, who stressed the club had not given up hope of keeping the Kiwi match-winner.

"We know Shane will make his decision at the end of the season.

"But I'm sure that will be a big bonus for him to have that ability to play in Asia if we were to be successful."

Reluctant to look too far ahead given their looming battle with Central Coast in Gosford on Saturday night, Mensink yesterday confirmed a Champions League spot could pave the way for United to re-unite winning combinations even if only temporarily.

While big names Jason Culina (Newcastle), Dino Djulbic (China), Bas van den Brink (Korea) and Zenon Caravella (Adelaide) head the list of stars moving on after attracting big-money offers, Mensink said there was an option for the departing contingent to return on loan if United can secure an Asian Cup berth.

"I've mentioned that to the players and they are supportive of the idea but obviously it depends on the timing," he said. "We've flagged it with them but we have to get through this weekend first."

While Asia is the big prize, on the home front a win on Saturday will set up a showdown with Brisbane Roar -- who have already secured a spot in the ACL -- in next weekend's grand final at Suncorp Stadium.

And Mensink said if they could set up an all-Queensland showdown, he could guarantee club owner Clive Palmer will cut short his business trip in Asia to cheer on his team of champions.

"I've spoken to Clive, only briefly, but he was ecstatic and very proud of the boys," Mensink said. "He wished he could have been in Adelaide and wishes he could be in Gosford this weekend.

"But I have reassurance that if we make the grand final he will definitely cancel whatever appointments and business commitments he has to make sure he's back."

Well he's worth goals. They perhaps have realised he needs looking after. Think it is a relatively diverse country, funnily enough with it being a billion point 4 people and going from Europe to Asia and back again.

Killen's club seems to have looked after him and Ivan.

My current contract would have to run out. But you never close those doors. I had a fantastic time when I was there and it's something I would always consider, especially if the right people were still at the club.

[Last question] John asks: You've not moved to the Phoenix this season. But, would you ever come back? And what would have to change to make it happen?
1:19
Shane Smeltz:
Back to the drinking question. No I don't drink much at all. Being a professional athlete you don;t find as much time to soacialise, certainly not as much as some of my friends. But I do like to ernjoy myself when I can, but those times are infrequently.
1:18
Shane Smeltz:
That's difficult. I try to take something from all my coaches, and even if I haven't felt they've been that good there might be one or two things they say you take on board and learn from.

Anonymous asks: Who is the most promising player yet to play for the All Whites?
1:11
Shane Smeltz:
That's always difficult to pick. It's quite an even comp. This year I think Brisbane will stay strong. I'm hoping Perth Glory will be a contender with the recruiting we've done and then your usual teams -- Melbourne, Central Coast, the ones with experience in finals will be up there as well.

Shane Smeltz:
Depending on the formation you could see all three of us in the starting lineup. That's a tough one, obviiously Woodsy is big anb strong and can hold the ball up well. Kosta brings pace and skill. A lot will also depend on who's at the back for them.
1:03
Stuff Sport:
Daz asks: Who would you like to partner up front with against Australia? Kosta? Chris Wood?
1:03
Shane Smeltz:
In football you move around quite a bit you pick up plenty of good friends everywhere you go. Certainly in the national team playing from U20s through U23s to the full antional team you get some really good mates. and we're still playing together now. without naming specific players the boys in the national team are really close mates.

Shane Smeltz:
I will be honest and I have never, ever taken a dive. It's one of those things it's either in you to do it or not. I've even been told by coaches or other players that maybe I should have in certain situations. But it's difficult when it's just not in you.
12:59
Stuff Sport:
Ashley asks: Ever taken a dive Smeltzy? Be honest!
12:59
Shane Smeltz:
We're not fully fit at the moment so you might see some players tiring in the second half, but we've got a big squad to cover for that.
12:58
Shane Smeltz:
We haven't done anythign specific about dealing with altitude because it's difficult to do that from here. But we have played at altitude before in SA a couple of times so we know what to expect.
12:57
Shane Smeltz:
We never go into a game expecting to lose, or not looking for a good result and we'll be doing that again.
12:57
Shane Smeltz:
Going in we know it's going to be very tough and the conditions will be tricky. We know they're a a quality side. But we want to do well and keep our standards high.
12:56
Stuff Sport:
Mike asks: What expectations do you have for your match against Mexico? Have the team made any changes to their training to suit the altitude in Denver?
12:56
Shane Smeltz:
I think the game was much needed to be out there getting minutes under our belt.
12:55
Shane Smeltz:
We're in as good a shape as we can be at this stage of the season which is always difficult.
12:55
Stuff Sport:
Nick asks: Are the Australia-based All Whites in good shape for the Mexico and Australia games? Did last night's run against Waitakere help?
12:55
Shane Smeltz:
On the footwork question, I would have to say Kosta Barbarouses and Leo Bertos have some of the better footwork in the team. But I'm still waiting for them to produce more in the games.
12:53
Shane Smeltz:
Even though I love watching allt he games in the PL I support Arsenal. I've fancied them for a number of years going right back to when Anelka was playing for them up front. I like their style of play.
12:52
Stuff Sport:
Paul asks: Is there a English Premier League club you support? And why?
12:51
Stuff Sport:
Jason asks: Hey Shane, which All White has the best footwork and can do the best tricks?
12:51
Shane Smeltz:
It's always difficult to pick as well with the clash of styles. But I'm going to go out on a limb and say ManU to win.
12:50
Shane Smeltz:
That's a tough one. Barcelona have got to be favourites simply because they have to be the best team in the world at the moment. The benefit for Manchester is it's at Wembley.
12:49
Stuff Sport:
Red asks: Shane, Champions League final: Man United or Barcelona?
12:49
Shane Smeltz:
If you had bring out a side like Turkey to Australia or NZ and then the players based in Europe it wouln't be easy. But I live the idea if someone can make it work.
12:48
Shane Smeltz:
I think that would be a reasonably good idea. The trouble with these good ideas is they're difficult to put into action with the international windows. That's why in Europe it's so easy for countries to play each other
12:47
Stuff Sport:
Matt asks: What would you think about an ANZAC tournament between Australia, NZ and Turkey being played every few years?
12:47
Shane Smeltz:
But at the end of the day you never really know if it's just talk or hype. Nothing's ever been concrete from the Premier League that's for sure.
12:46
Shane Smeltz:
No, to be honest most things are done through your agents so you don't deal direct through the clubs. There has only ever been some discussion with a couple of lower teams in the league
12:45
Stuff Sport:
Kyle asks: Has an English Premier League club ever approached you about a transfer?
12:45
Shane Smeltz:
I know a little more about the Australian setup because that's where I came through. I know they've got plenty of academies and that sort of thing. I think we need to pay a fair bit of attention to those
12:45
Shane Smeltz:
But without knowing too much what's happening in youth systems here I feel we need to make sure we've got quality coaches dealing with the youth to make sure we're producing good players
12:44
Shane Smeltz:
Once again I know NZ football working on this heavily and it's something we need to pay attention to if we want the national teams to be strong for the future
12:43
Stuff Sport:
Matt asks: What do you think is the most important thing that needs to be done in order to develop the grassroots game in NZ?
12:43
Shane Smeltz:
Most people know now. It simply never got started to be honest. I went over with good intentions to play on a two-year deal but it wasn't set up correctly from certain people. I learnt from that as well, you certainly need be careful in this game and make sure things are right. It just wasn't right for me. I was only there three days and I've put that behind me now
12:41
Stuff Sport:
Charlie asks: What happened to your move to China? Why did it end so soon?
12:41
Shane Smeltz:
Probably not. Certainly in the past w e haven't. I think its trying to be changed now. We're trying to play a few games here each year now. It's always difficult with so many players offshore. It's not easy to assemble teams and get players back fit and willing. When we can we need to make the most of it and from a national setup I know they're lookign to play more games here from now on
12:39
Stuff Sport:
Nick asks: Do you think the All Whites play enough games in New Zealand?
12:39
Shane Smeltz:
Another good question to be honest. Looking at it now it's something we'd like to avoid I'd say. Our chances now against one of those SA sides would be as good as ever, and I think we take some confidence from playing Paraguay at the World Cup, and we've had a taste of them in the past. We'd be looking to do well and of course progress but if we could avoid it there's no doubt it would nbe to our benefit.
12:37
Stuff Sport:
Tim asks: How do you feel about the possibility of facing a South American side to qualify for the next World Cup in Brazil 2014?
12:37
Shane Smeltz:
Not really one striker. I'm a fan of a number around the world and certainly watch their games and try and take in and learn what you can. Each striker has their strengths and always something you can learn. For example Wayne Rooney and Fernando Torres are different type of strikers, and I try and take the best from each of those and learn what I can off them.
12:36
Shane Smeltz:
In terms of would I go back to Europe again, at this stage I'm not looking at it but it's something you never rule out. You always leave that door open. I'm very comfortable with where I am now and looking forward to the future.
12:35
Stuff Sport:
Jose asks: Is there a striker in world football you base your game on?
12:35
Shane Smeltz:
That's a difficult one. First the reasons for leaving Turkey were a combiantion of football and family. When I first went over things were good, then very quickly they changed when I came back for international duty in NZ. When I arrived back in Turkey the coach and assistant coach had been sacked and that changed a lot of things.
12:33
Stuff Sport:
Hayden asks: What were your reasons for leaving Turkey? Would you ever consider a European move again?
12:33
Shane Smeltz:
That's an easy one to be honest. It would have to be the World Cup one against Italy in South Africa. I've scored better looking goals I'm sure but that one has to be the most memorable for me.
12:32
Stuff Sport:
Dene asks: What's your most memorable goal?
12:32
Shane Smeltz:
Basically it was a decision I didn't take lightly, and took quite a bit of time over. There were number of clubs I looked at. It was difficult to look at the Phoenix at the time because of the situation they were in. It loooks like they're over that now. But Perth was the right deal for myself and my family and in the end it was a reasonably easy decision.
