Kiwi Players Elsewhere

Themistoklis Tzimopoulos (Levadiakos | Greece)

A player who has spent a decade in professional football in Greece - and has racked up almost 100 games in the Greek Super League - is set to be included in Anthony Hudson's next All Whites squad to face South Korea later this month.

In the traditions of Winston Reid's discovery, New Zealand Football hope they have uncovered another gem, with their global scouting efforts of the last six months about to pay off.

Mark down the name of Themistoklis Tzimopoulos. It's understood the 29-year-old defender has New Zealand heritage through his mother, and is eligible to represent this country.

Sounds promising.

sounds quite similar to this dutch guy? Wonder if Hudson has looked at him also.

If we get one decent DM out of Hudsons search it was all worth it.

Sounds like "zim-op-olo" here to me on this Greek commentary when he scores:

Awesome news at the very least a very capable squaddie. Would start him next to Reid and then move Tommy to the problem left back spot if he can perform. How far back can you go with this thing like grandmother ? great grandmother ?

From what I understand you can only go back to grandparents, however I may be wrong.

Lets be honest, we are going to need all the help we can get to qualify for the next World Cup. Guys like this and Van Den Broek are only going to strengthen the team and create more competition.

Great news.....another experianced pro footballer will be great for the AW's. No harm giving him a trial. He's a mean looking dude.....looks like a hard nosed no shiite type of defender. Just what the AW's need a bit of muscle and mongrel in defense

It sounds like he would make a good DM according to Hudson. He probably would be more commanding than Bill in that position at the moment due to his size but with his experience he'd also be good for Bill to learn off.

The next All Whites squad could look quite interesting.

Ok, folks...Hudson has been looking at this guy since early October....yes he is a guy that is good on the "air" not afraid to "go forward" has scored 4 goals in his last 6-7 games....  scored a brace in one of them....and yes he is a guy that can make a difference for the AW's. As to why he wasn't "found" earlier well that's another story for the previous administration...!! anyway I made a post back in Nov 14 indicating this.......and yes I am biased...!! Let's give him a chance and you never know....I am sure he will add stability to our backline and together with some of the other guys we can start rebuilding the AWs.

Now as for his name.....Just call him " Themis"  ....!!! as for his surname "Tzimopoulos" well its a kind of TZ a profound Z with a hint of a small "t"  in front of it...!!!!!!

Now the history...he played for the Olympic juniors for a season (obviously quite a few years ago...so yia we are claiming him...!!)...and his uncle was the probably one of the best defenders in the old days for Olympic..( he even played for the Olympic masters recently when they won the national title....( Baz your 5 min of fame starts now...!!!).

Look let's give these new guys a chance and you never know....as for Hudson...hat off to him for "asking and yes daring to do something different" by exploring different options.

Yip it was rather non existent BUT ...Well the fact is that he likes to go forward and he has scored some good goals...that can only be good for us...!! He is also good on the set pieces...he will add another dimension to the squad....even in his younger days he liked to go around 2 -3 players and then score....but these days he is a bit more direct ...!!!

That goal was from 2010 in the Football League (second division in Greece) playing for Ethnikos Asteras.

On July 1st of the same year he moved to PAS Giannina, also in the Football League.

After one season there it looks like they were promoted to the Greek first division Super League where the team has remained.

I bet the fax machine was broke if they did!

Well put it this way, they were advised at the time but I assume that they decided not to do anything about it as they already had all the "stars"...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway ...I look forward in seeing this lad get some game time and who knows....he may be what the AWs need in the defensive midfield....Do we know if the game will be televised somehow...??

Full 90 in a 0-0 draw with Panaitolikos(5).

PAS Giannina are currently 6th in the Greek Super League.

Winner of the league gets direct entry to the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. Teams 2 through to 5 enter a playoff for a second Greek entry. The winner of the playoff enters the UEFA Champions League's third qualifying round.

Well,

Themi's team have performed very well in the last month.

They drew with Panaitolikos, and since have recorded three consecutive victories, including a 3-1 home win vs top of the league Olympiakos. Tzimopoulos played the full 90. Started at right CB and seemed to moved into midfield, looking at the highlights.

Team are now 5th.

Excellent highlights from Olympiakos website.

Tuiloma can pass off both pegs, and based on the way his club team play and train he will only get better at this.

Hard to make passes if people aren't making runs or moving into spaces.
