Maybe, but I really doubt he would get even close to consideration. He's 22 and couldn't get a sniff in to first team football in a middling Euro league this season. Hardly a bright prospect by US standards

Reckon he could quite easily get a call up if he has a few first team apperances. The US team are good, but a lot of their players play at a middling level.

If he was playing regularly in the first team in the Portuguese top flight then I could see how he might be a long shot for a call up, although not a favourite. But he didn't play at all for the first team this year and only two games off the bench last year.  At his age you wouldn't expect massive improvement anymore so if he's not good enough to force his way even into the fringes of the first team now I can't see that changing

I was going to point out Julian Green, being a similar age to Boyd, having probably less first team experience (15 appearances all up, 10 in the 2nd Bundesliga) - but he has been picked on promise which may never eventuate.

Sure, but Green was good enough to make the bench at Bayern for Bundesliga and UCL games, and to play for them in cup games, and to represent Germany at age group level. Sure he doesn't have a lot of first team experience but he has made those 10 appearances in the 2 Bundesliga in half a season, so is getting much more regular first team football than Boyd even now. I think we would all agree that Boyd is worse than Rojas too, and Rojas was released without being able to get in the first team by the club that Green is now starting for. I think the comparison falls down pretty quickly.

Green was also at one of the biggest clubs in world football - Bayern Munich. You don't get picked up by Bayern unless you have some real talent. Green has also had a loan spell at Hamburg (played about 5 Bundesliga games) and is now at Stuttgart. But yes to date has played most of his career in lower German leagues, with club 2nd sides.

Looks like he's also made 5 appearances for US national team to date.

Call me ignorant but I'd never heard of Vitoria, until they signed Boyd. So don't think comparing Boyd to Green is really relevant.

Spoke to a Vitoria fan just a while ago. He seems to think that Boyd will be in the first team picture this season, and the reason he hasn't is because there are 4 or 5 extremely talented players and backup ahead of him (kind of like NZ's depth on the wings), not to take away from his talent, he's just been unlucky with other players shining. But two or three wingers ahead of him will be leaving, in his opinion, so he should get a look in.

I had heard something similar. Vitoria has been having financial problems so selling off a few good players is probably there only option. Boyd just needs to mark his time and keep working hard.....his time will come. Lots of better European clubs scout the Portuguese leagues. Good player development and cheap players makes it an ideal place to recruit. Boyd just needs a slice of luck and anything could happen.

Apparently heading out on loan to Tondela.

Gotta love Google translate...

Tyler Boyd arrives on loan 09:59 - 23-06-2017 A- A A + Tyler Boyd is on his way to Tondela on loan from Vitória de Guimarães. The New Zealand winger has revealed qualities in the breasts of the minhoto game, but needs to add more minutes in the League to evolve and this can happen in the Beira formation. The BALL said Friday that negotiations between the two clubs are well advanced and the agreement for the transfer of Tyler Boyd should be made official this week.

Tondela finished 16th last season, and only just avoided relegation with a superior GD of plus 1 goal! over relegated Arouca (who finished on same number of points) but in 17th place, and so went down.

On face of it, much better chance Boyd will now get some playing time in the Portuguese top flight.

Yes it is a loan and has joined former victory player Nick Ansell.

Good luck to him, this is a good move to see whether he can cut it as a first team player

Re: his non-selection for AWs, I think 2b's post was probably spot on.

If players didn't show enough desire and commitment when Hudson first spoke to them or considered their selection, then Hudson had no time for them, no matter their talent. Some of those guys like Smith and Moss clearly re-initiated contact with Hudson themselves after that had happened, and convinced him that they now had that desire, so he's trusted them and bought them back into the fold.

I assume Boyd hasn't done this, but that if he did, surely Hudson would consider him.

We don't know if he's even available for selection, he might have told them he wasn't available at the nations cup for the foreseable future.

He's only playing football until he makes it into the movies.

I'm sure he'll be an AW in 2018 either due to Hudson jumping/being pushed out after the playoffs or Hudson needing his very best players in Russia.

If he starts playing regularly, and it certainly seems like he will be, then surely he will get a recall. Behind Wood and Thomas, he is playing at a higher level than any other current NZ striker / AM.

Don't know how relevant this is but on his Instagram bio, he has the US and NZ flags and the US flag comes first, conflicted?

The All Whites offered him a spot in the squad for the nations cup and he turned them down, people on here keep wondering why Hudson doesn't select him but do we know if he has actually made himself available?

Really it's up to Hudson to explain to the fans when he names his squads, why likes of Boyd & Gleeson are not picked. These are the 2 recent glaring omissions that stand out. Also the football journos should do their job, and ask these questions. Not just the sycophantic NZF press releases that seem to accompany recent AW squad announcements.

I'm mostly happy with Hudson, but to me he's never properly explained, why some players haven't been picked. The temporary dropping of Kosta was an exception where he outlined it well.

Until then fans will just continue to speculate/guess!  I'm also yet to hear NZF/Hudson confirm that Boyd made himself unavailable for Nations Cup last year.

"The All Whites offered him a spot in the squad for the nations cup and he turned them down" is the product of a football journo asking Anthony Hudson the question.

He didnt play ofc nations cup because he wanted to crack first team in portugal first. Nothing wrong with that look at Tuiloma. Stunted his development hasnt it. Not his fault we have no depth and a coach unwilling to look at established older pros first

I personally think if he had said I am not available, the media would have picked up on it - remember the outraged with Tommy Smith? Instead, I haven't heard anything to this extent other than speculation, so the truth is that we don't really know.

I really hope he gets picked at some stage as I'd like to see how he progressed since moving to Portugal.

And besides, he can't be any worse than some of those amateur players I see floating around the AWs anyway...

Its a bit more of a headline when an All Whites captain says he is unavailable!

it comes down to whether you believe anthony hudson or not - he said boyd turned down the callup, that is a fact, not speculation.

why hasn't it prompted outrage? probably because he's a bit-part player in his young 20s playing reserve football in Portugal, not a man handed the captain's armband who's an English Championship regular, and an international starter from the moment he debuted.
