We've got a Roy thread, a Stevie thread, why not one for our newest young star?
Sarpreet Singh (União de Leiria | Portugal)

yeah an interesting quirk that each record was a Melbourne team
that was our 100th win too yeah, 400th goal in the 100th win is pretty special.

Unfortunately not, the week before against CCM was our 100th
From the R10 thread:
Sarpreet will not have his father interferring like Marco's did.
I know nothing about Sarpreet's family; do you?

If I've learnt anything from all the Bollywood movies that my wife watches, then Indian parents are basically the worst when it comes to interferring in the lives of their kids.
Yes, but if we're going to take Bollywood movies for anything, then we'd expect Sarpreet to break out into at least one song-and-dance number per game

I'd pay to see that. After he scores a hatty, ideally.

Interview from way back in 2010, mum seems pretty supportive:

Great story. I saw Singh first at Petone Memorial about 3 years ago for Wellington United v Petone in a Central League game. It was clear to anyone watching that he had a gifted talent. I then saw him play in a Phoenix pre season warm up game at Faser Park and he was the best player on the pitch. In fact Guy Smith commented the same on one of these forums.
The only thing that surprised me was that they took so long to play him and then when he was given 20 minutes against Sydney last year he made an immediate impact with Piney saying that he was pulling all the strings after 5 minutes on the park. The next week the clown coach we had dropped him from the squad.

Yeah we're so lucky to have him right now, NZ's got some great youth talent coming through and Singh's the pick of the bunch. Anyone who was into youth football at the time could tell he was/is something special; had a mate in Wellington who played against him once and got completely skinned all game. Told me in 2016 that he was more promising than Rogerson, which took me by surprise a bit.
First time I stood up and took notice was the Reserves game against Hawke's Bay at the Cake Tin (I think?) last season, Man if I could find highlights of that game. Made grown men look like toddlers, scored a great solo goal from outside the box and I think grabbed an assist or two as well. Made me think, "he's our future".
Do you think Singh would suit Asia then Europe?. He could easily get his Indian passport for the +1 AFC rule.

Usually the last scene too so at the final whistle expect to see both sets of players doing some sort of mob dance Bollywood style.
A bit scary when the Aussie commentators are calling him the best player in the league at the moment.

Surely not, given Honda etc. Who said that?
Mark Bosnich said it on A-League Hour, saying that he was the best player in the league right now after that last round. Robbie Slater agreed and Daniel McBreen compared him to Messi.
Why Bend It Like Beckham when we can Swing It Like Singh!
Think he is fortunate to have Rudan and some experienced players around him which should keep him from letting the good things being said about him going to his head Cant wait to see how far he can take his game as he is only going to get better the more experience he gets.
I saw him play at an Intermediate school tournament in Auckland a few years ago. Steve Cain told me to go and watch him before the team I coached played against him. I'd had some talent at my school through our academy (TAHW being one) but Singh was so far in advance of anything I'd seen. So beautifully balanced and imaginative, you just knew he'd go far.

He's certainly very humble which should help him a lot with this. He's no Arzani!
I hope the Nix will be a AAA team in the next few seasons, worth playing for, and Singh will be challenged and develop further into something great. When he is wise and good enough to leave for Europe, and not for some other trash A-League club, so we can cash in big $$.

Sarpreet has always been very talented, and he has always been an extremely smart footballer which has made his physical limitations less noticeable; however Liam Jordan tended to get (and perhaps deservedly so, he was ridiculous) all the credit for Onehunga when they were young growing up.
You can see Singh as #11 and #5 throughout this clip. At 50 seconds in he features in an excellent move where he gives the ball, makes a run in behind, is then played in beautifully by Jordan, and calmly finishes. The intelligence to make these sort of runs and play this type of football at 13? years old is remarkable and a reason why both players have become very good footballers.
He also completely does a defender at 2.02, resulting in a goal. Just thought it would be interesting for people to compare him now to how he was as a 13 year old - a key theme: intelligence
The show isn't over until sarpreet Singh!
what the heck did Singh do in the last game I missed to have everyone banging on like he is suddenly some messiah?!
Played well in the second half!

Not much but there's a small selection of highlights in the video in this article. Conveniently called "Mark Bosnich says Sarpreet Singh is the best player in the A-League right now". Also had one of the cleanest megs I've seen, which is up on the A-League's Instagram and Twitter accounts

Found these comments by Hyslop interesting
"The kid can play. He ripped Brisbane apart last weekend, after earlier in the season finding himself out of the squad. There were a few reasons for that and not all of them need to be public knowledge, but what is public knowledge is how he has comeback from that and set the league alight."

Could be anything though, from family issues, to illness to attitude. No point guessing at it.

I am surprised that the Aussie comments panel are praising him so much especially when last year they totally rubbished The Nix, but then maybe we deserved it because we were crap.

My bet is a reprimand for being up late o' nights, doing the kind of thing teenage lads do. No biggie.
Does anyone know how long Sarpreet has on his contract with us? :)

If I was Singh I probably wouldn't be signing a longer contract past next season in a hurry, I'd probably be looking to head to Europe after that. Unless maybe Phoenix want to come up with a huge money contract to stay.
"A near sell out AAMI Park meant for a fantastic Friday night atmosphere where Victory favourite Marco Rojas’ tag as the ‘Kiwi Messi’ has been dismantled to make way for Wellington’s Sarpreet Singh, an exceptional talent who is no doubt in pole position for the A-League Young Footballer of the Year gong." Don't forget Mark Bosnich is an idiot. Singh is not the best player in the A-League, he may the best young player at the moment. It's just hyping some player to get some talking points. We all know since a while how good Singh is and it's clear that he will gets even better.
But comments 'best A-League player', 'like Messi' are just over the top...Messi played first team Barca and Argentina at that age.
