Winston Reid (Unattached FC)

I wonder what Frankie Mac thinks about Avram Grant and Tal Ben Haim missing the game against Stoke because of Yom Kippur, given all the angst about Winston Reid possibly missing a game because of All Whites commitments.

By the way, the fact that Reid has been out with a sore bum just shows how ludicrous all the wailing and gnashing of teeth over his trip down under really is. Players miss games for all sorts of reasons, that's life!

TBH, Frankie is the only one who I've head moaning about Reid heading downunder.

Reid must have played well then because although half evertons reserves are about 17.  Beckford, Yakubu, Coleman, Geye, and Phil Neville played for the reserves from the first team. The first four listed are very much attacking flair players bar maybe the yak but it would have been a good test of Reids strength against the Yak.

to be honest, I don't give a c**t.  My wanting Reid to not fly 24,000 miles in a week was nothing to do with West Ham, and everything to do with the All Whites (as in the more we have playing regualr football at a top level, the better it is for us).  Therefore Ben Haim not playing for a week and putting his position in the first team under threat is actually a good thing for the AW's as it may give Reid a chance to grab a starting position which is then his to lose.

Winston played the full 90 in a 1-0 win over Everton Reserves. It says he was one of three first teamers involved, Stech and Tomkins being the others. Sounds like he did really well.

Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

Tal Ben Haim is absent from this game - as is Grant - so it'll either be Tomkins or Winston in middle of defence. So I think he is at least got a spot on the bench sewn in. Hoping he starts. Otherwise there is absolutely no way I am watching this!

Absolutely agreed. I'll stay up until the coverage starts and if Reid isn't starting then I'm off to bed. :) . Would he be expected to start ahead of Tomkins?

I really think it's a 50/50. Both haven't been great in the first team so far, but both had good games in the reserves against Everton the other night. I'll have a look at the West Ham forums to see what they all think.

A brief look at one of the forums indicated it will either be a Reid/Upson partnership or an Upson/Da Costa one. Chin up Tomkins.

If he continues to be outside the match squad,he should be loaned to a championship team, maybe just for 2 months, because he must play.Stormpark942010-09-26 03:53:24

He is sick, as was Dyer who came off just before half time.
Perhaps he will get two intenrational games under his belt bwfore returning for a loan period.
Da Kosta did alright at centreback today as did Jacobsen at fullback.

Winston is in the August/September Mana magazine.

"All White Winston Reid shot to fame with his last-gasp goal against Slovakia in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. But who is this young Maori footballer who grew up in Denmark? Derek Fox tells the Winston Reid story. And former footballer Derek Royal looks at how more young Maori are turning to football a far cry from the days when his was the only brown face in a sea of white playing the round ball game."

Pretty disappointing, all the excitement that came with him signing for West Ham and now he can't make the squad. These internationals might be a last chance to prove himself before the Hammers begin looking at loan options.

NZ Manu, it isnt quite as easy as getting a contract then getting a game.

I agree, it will be good for him to  get a couple more internationals under his belt and as already suggested, it would be good for him to get a loan period where he does get games. The Championship league is strong and probably even a step up from what he was playing in Denmark. Burnley, Hull and Portsmouth are all struggling to hold their own after being relegated last year.

When Jermain Defoe was at West Ham they loaned him out to Bournmouth. He learnt how to cope, and achieve, then was bought back and the rest is history. Reid is 21. If he has had two full seasons of EPL before the 2014 WC then he will be a great asset.

Tis, and really the only way we would know is if WR stands out in the Championship more than he did in Denmarks top division..

Don't think that individual players' perfomances accross different leagues can serve as a meaningful way to compare the relative strenghts of those leagues, since many different factors impact individual performances other than just the level of play.

Have seen a few Danish teams over the last couple of seasons (Copenhagen, AaB Aalborg and Odense) and they are all pretty good football teams.

Yes, maybe it was an unjustified statement. Lets just hope he starts getting games and developing as a player.

Looks to be back this weekend...

Reid came off in the 43rd minute of this mornings Reserves match against Wigan. Thought to be a continuation of the same illness that kept him out previously. Sounds like he played ok until that point though.

(Hammers won 2-0).

This is West Ham we are talking about. People pay 25 quid just to see the jerseys being pegged out after the washing.

Winston had a late fitness test, but has not been named in the squad just released to play Fulham it looks like.

Given he hasn't been deemed fit enough to play for West Ham any chance he wont be fit enough to come home?

Heh, was confused where you got that idea from until I had a closer look at mt tweets.

I'm (unfortunately) not meeting him. When I said I was looking forward to seeing him in person, I meant watching him live rather than on TV. Sorry for any confusion, it wasn't something I was trying to suggest!
