You could also argue Winston's progressed much further at this age than Ryan did. Which surely isn't a bad thing.

Agreed - where was Ryan at 22? Not at an EPL side getting regular time, that's for sure.

Centre backs often don't mature as players until later in their career..

Sounds like he's a fan

You really believe that?

Wasn't really anything to do with what I believe, it's just a quote from a premiership manager is all...

Even a year in the Championship could be good for Reid if it means regular starts

Was Reid marking Zigic for his goal?

No, Da Kosta was.

Upson came into the line-up for Tomkins, but was replaced by Da Vosta

Actually it was Bridge, but Reid got a shove in the back from Zigic before he headed it home.

He was ok. Gave away a few corners by not getting enough on it but otherwise ok

Not even West Ham are stupid enough to put Bridge on Zigic on set pieces.  Our Winnie was marking him, but Zigic pulled off onto Bridge way too easily.

Taken from the KUMB.com match report. Oh dear:

Odemwingie then somehow missed a free header from a corner before Chris Brunt's fairly innocuous 32nd minute free kick, floated into the box, was turned into his own net by the hapless Reid, looking more like a Sunday league footballer than one deserving of a starting berth in a Premier League team.

and..

So (very) down but not out, West Ham set about their unlikely comeback in committed fashion - but only after they had survived a third penalty appeal following Reid's clumsy 49th minute challenge on Thomas.

and..

Massive question marks remain about the ability of young Winston Reid to cope at this level currently, whilst the entire team appeared completely unprepared to deal with their opponents.

Hope they keep him on to prove his worth to the critics.

Ouch. Saw him play on Sky the other week and actually though he did ok, he basically ran the defence and made some good clearances which bodes well for the future. He just needs  more game time to adjust to the pace, it doesn't help that your fellow defenders are of the pace as well.

From Premier League Official Website:

Reid then survived another scare at the other end when his apparent handball in the box went unpunished.

The New Zealand defender was having a torrid afternoon and it got worse moments later as Albion extended their advantage.

Think it's pretty obvious he isn't ready for this level. Had a horrid game.

I think he would be fine with either Tomkins of Upson there. He proved he is not ready to lead a backline when Ryan Nelsen was missing from the Paraguay game in Wellington. Da Kosta was awful

He will come right. He will be playing Championship next year with WH

He's on 22, plenty of time to develop. But West Ham fans must be questioning his price tag.

Well, yes, but I would agree that the World Cup overinflated his price tag quite a bit

Watched the highlights last night.  That commentary is a tad harsh.  If the penalty shout described above was I one I saw then it definately wasn't a pen.

And Reid got hung out to dry for that OG as nothing of his teammates even attempted a header.

After watching the highlights, his performance wasn't actually that bad. He nearly scored a goal himself, him and Ba? were both left unmarked and went to header the ball, but the other West Ham player got in there before him. I actually thought West Ham played alright, and they had so many opportunities on goal, if Reid is made the scapegoat then it's a bit unfair. Also, didn't he clear a shot off the line?

When paired up with someome decent, he's looked ok in his games and West Ham have generally not conceeded too many.

How good one CB plays is often more a measure of his understanding with his fellow CB as opposed to his ability... and i doubt this is a cb pair that have trained many times together like that since neither one of them is choice 1 or 2.

both have probaly trained next to Upson or Tomkins more than each other... learning curve deifnately, proof he's playing aove himself, hardly.

pretty hard to assss without watching whole game. Might have been slightly more alert on the own goal, but half the team missed the ball first. And was definitely a pen, but then he actually did brilliantly to save a goal that his fellow defenders had conspired to create. Reid only made the foul in last ditch recovery. It was an open goal. Should get credit for that. Marius Lacatus2011-02-15 20:17:12
