Winston Reid (Unattached FC)

Interview a complete exercise in public w**king by this Morrison dork.

"Oh, look how clever I am - I'm far too clever to interview a common footballer"

The interview is more about the interviewer than the subject!

I'd clam up myself if interviewed by someone like that.

You have to have a basic level of respect to conduct a good interview and draw good answers out of people.

It's only valid to be critical of people if they have offensive opinions e.g. racist, are corrupt or mis-use power.

Otherwise it's just offensive to lampoon someone for not being perceived as articulate etc.

Winston deserves more respect as I think he must have some kind of mana and personal integrity, on top of his obvious playing ability, to be voted both "Hammer of the Year" by fans and "Players' Player of the Year" last season.

Back to what we admire Winston for, his prowess on the pitch - watched the whole game and thought Winston was outstanding - with Winston and Collins, the two centrebacks as last line of defence, no one got more headers or tackles in than Winston.

The whole team played very well, surprisngly well for the first game of the season when teams are usually far from their top form.

Downing showed he'll be  a real force in his 20 minutes, Diame and Cole were very sharp too.

And they still have Andy Carroll coming back in a few weeks and Carlton Cole possibly re-signing.

Some attractive football along the deck - no proliferation of long balls at all.

Things are looking good for a top season from the Hammers...

Perhaps if he didn't want 'predictable' answers, he shouldn't have asked the same old boring questions.  Just a terrible, terrible interview.

The interview says more about the person asking the questions (a complete moron it seems) than the person answering them. If you want better answers ask better questions.

Fuck this stupid game

Worst Interview I've read. So fucking embarrassing and rude. I get that interviewing sports people can suck sometimes but um go get another job then asshole if it's so painful

Bet you this prick would not have dared trying this on a rugby player based in NZ. Never mind an all black captain. If he did, his career would have been in tatters. But no, it's only football (or soccer in his eyes) and the guy is off shore with a low profile, so let's give it to him.

Terrible low rent journalism. Winston probably figured out when he was dealing with this guy that he was a fuckwit. So he basically gave him stock boring answers to stock boring questions. I still reckon most football players give better interviews than most of those grunting neanderthals that play rugby

Picked up a shoulder injury against stoke. Wonder if that will rule him out

Jeepers, we're in trouble if Winston's out!!

Hope RH has a back-up plan!! Maybe that was RH's idea behind making Winston captain - more chance Winston's club make him available and Winston ensures he's available.

If he is out then either Adams or Boxall will get a call-up (yes probably before Fitzgerald)

If Payne's out perhaps Clapham will be on a plane

Didnt rule himself out in comments after the game

""While many of his team-mates will fly to Spain for a meeting with Primera Division side RCD Espanyol on Thursday evening, Reid will be boarding a place for the Middle East, where he will captain New Zealand in the four-nation OSN Cup in Saudi Arabia.

The All Whites take on the host nation in Riyadh on Thursday before facing either United Arab Emirates or Trinidad and Tobago on Monday 9 September.

The games will not only serve as preparation for New Zealand's FIFA World Cup final-round qualifiers with Panama in November, but also help Reid get over the disappointment of Saturday's defeat in time for the trip to Southampton on Sunday 15 September.

"It's is going to be hot in Saudi Arabia so I'm going to have to make sure I take my fluids. It's going to be good to get away for a bit with the national team, as we're trying to build towards going to another World Cup. It'll be nice to see the guys again.

"We have two competitive games and my job as captain is to get the boys together and make sure we get on the same track and are ready for our games in November.

Our Winnie smashed it out of the park today. Away at WHL, the Hammers took it 3-0, Winnie grabbing the opener. From all accounts was immense, potentially MoM. Again.

guardian talks of the 'excellent Winston Reid' through-out their article, Big Sam played a wierd 6-4 and rocked the party in the second half. There is little doubt that Winston has now cemented himself as one of the top 10 CB's in the premiership. Should have had a goal in the first half as well.......

Thought he showed great composure for his goal. Had his first header blocked off the line by his own teammate (?!) but managed to smash home the rebound. Top form Winny.

The independent called him "the most underrated defender in the division". Wonder when a bigger club will come for him? He's hardly a flash in the pan.

Yeah there was a fair bot of chat around Arsenal over the January window last year. That'd be a bitter sweet one...

Big clubs are great for the bank balance but not always the best for development. He is one of the first names on the team sheet at West Ham, would that be the case at one of the bigger clubs?

When will he step it up playing for the AWs? To me he never really looks like a top premier leaguer when playing for us.

Maybe others around him bring him down but playing consistently at this level I think he should be a stand out but rarely is.

I agree. Has never looked anywhere near as good or influential as Nelsen did for the All Whites. Half of the time it looks like he doesn't want to be playing for NZ and it looks like he thinks that he's so much better than everyone else in the team.

Is there any evidence that this is how he feels? Maybe he's just not impressed with the current set up with the AW's, it's hardly a team brimming with confidence. He could have played for Denmark after all rather than NZ and would have made their squad at the very least.

Nelsen was a lot older and maturer than Reid and probably found it easier to take charge. I mean if everything is to believed Nelsen was in charge of the AW's during the last world cup anyhow..

As I've not watched enough prem football to answer if he is good enough for the top 4-5 clubs. What do people think?

Permalink Permalink

He's suited more to Sam's hoofball than the pass-orientated style of the top 4-5 teams, really. Nothing wrong with that - suits the AW's too.

Think Reid has always been brought up in a pretty comfortable system in Denmark - maybe isn't used to the unprofessionalism of the AW's management. (which at times is farcical)

He fits in to WH and I think he is doing a pretty good job. Could not see him playing for Arsenal, City etc cause I don't think he is good enough.

3-4-3 and Ricki's baffling tactics in general would make it tough for any player.

Permalink Permalink

yep, it would make it impossible for a player to score a late goal at a WC and get picked up in the PL by a club run by a coach Ricki knew from his coaching licence course *sheesh*

Everytime Ricki coaches a team someone kicks a kitten

Just behind  Vertonghen, Ivanovic, Vidic, Koscielny, Kompany, Nastasic, Cahill, Jagielka, Williams are just a few who are miles better than him.

I wouldn't put Vidic or Williams in front of him at the moment. I'd say he's definitely top 10 though.

He has done very well and good on him. I don't agree that Vidic is not better and Willams is rated.
I also stopped after nine as i could not be bothered to go on. If you watched him play against City, you would know what I meant.

One bad game after being called to play 3 for the all whites in between its little wonder. Bigger picture leggy

Reid plays hoof ball. He still seems to struggle against teams that pass it around well. (so do most of the Hammers team though, to be fair)

In saying that, having a great season and definitely in the top 10 in form CB's.

Fair point, but he is a professional. Certainly not in the top 5 defenders though.

Has been great for hammers for two full seasons. Like every player, has some performances that better than others. Didn't see the city game, just the highlights. First goal was definitely tomkins fault, not Reid's. made a hash of one clearance that nearly led to goal and might just have done better on the third goal, but they were in the poo by time he tried to block the shot.
