Premier Star Wars - Episode 223; The Emperor strikes back

Sam Allardyce believes that he can still persuade Winston Reid to sign a contract extension before the end of the season.

Up to now the Kiwi centre half had steadfastly refused to sign a new deal, having spent the last four years at West Ham since moving from FC Midtjylland.

However Allardyce,  who was briefing the press ahead of tomorrow night's FA Cup 3rd Round replay against Everton, maintains that he can still persuade the 26-year-old to remain at the Boleyn.

"I think that what we have done this season - and hopefully we'll finish off the season strongly - might persuade him to sign for us," he said.

"We are on the up at the moment and we have got a very big future ahead of us, moving into the new stadium. So the club could be bigger than it’s ever been in the next four to five years."

Allardyce added that there was no chance of Reid moving during the current transfer window - unless the club received a huge offer. "There’s no choice for me, he stays - that’s it," he said.

"If somebody makes a big offer then obviously the chairman decides, but for me he’s staying.

The chairman decides whether the money is big enough, but for me he stays and I think that the way the club has improved, I think he will stay."

Well that's just about jinxed the deal Sam.....and the season!

Plenty of teams will be keen I reckon. An established EPL defender on a free.

Left out of the squad. Is he off negotiating personal terms with Man U? Being punished for not signing a new deal? Pulling a sickie? The plot thickens.

West Ham won't need him

Need him fit at least until end of season....and he's claiming that he's taken no decision about his future only that he'll definitely see out his contract. Similar thing happened with Slave Bilic but the deal was kept quiet till end of season.

I like how in that Arsenal are talking of signing two centre backs from a team that has had an absolutely dire season.

Err, one centre back. And they are both quality players.

Three for me, and two for them.

talk this morning of him going to Spurs, which I think would upset a lot of hammers fans if it happened. I think that most people could accept him going to a Liverpool or an Arsenal, but Spurs?  Fudge that noise.

they have 16 defenders already and pay shark wages....not happening. He might have to stay put and get European football anyway!

Maybe it's the facilities at Boleyn and Olympic Stadium that are putting him off re-signing?

I'd be surprised if he paid that much... reckon your lot would probably take 3 mil late in the window, or hold out and let him go free in the summer

From Sky Sports UK - 2nd Centre back they'll have signed this window ...

its not in our control. Winston will decide at the end of the season. I only hope his agent gets him a good deal and he doesn't end up warming the bench.!

Have heard that he's signed for Spurs but wont announce til season end. Million pound signing on fee as a free agent and 60 thousand pounds per week.

not true but even if it were; why go to somewhere out of european qualification for the same money he's been offered to stay. Legally speaking unless it was a pre-contract agreement, a verbal contract would not be enforceable and a beach of his current contract. We're so over this shark.

I think the key here is the 1000,000 quid signing on fee.

no point as his obligations cease end of season. Winston's professional enough to see it out, then decide (if he hasn't already). Signing on fee is normal business and effectively replaces a transfer fee. How much he divies up to his agent is his business.

I like Stuff's headline 'Hammer blow for Winston Reid' ... oh wait, no I dont. They make it sound like his dreams are shattered and that he's devastated. When in reality he's good enough to waltz into any of the worlds top leagues.

Spurs will qualify for Europe though, unlike West Ham.
