Full game in a 2-0 win, in the Utah snow!  Probably awhile since Reid played in the white stuff. Full on white blanket in the 2nd half.

SKC finish top of Western Conference, and look like they would host San Jose (8th in the West) in a QF?? No idea if they would have two lives finishing top.

If Winnie is all fit through the playoffs, SKC could be a good shout to go all the way.

Some real drama in this one, in the early winter Kansas sun.

2-2, and SJ hit the woodwork at 88 mins.

SKC think they have the winner at 90 mins (3-2), only for SJ to equalise at 97 mins (3-3) to take it to pens.

Melia SKC's keeper with 3 saves in the shootout.

And Reid (number 22) not credited with the goal, that he appears to slightly nudge in.

From this week's Flying Kiwis.

90mins.com: “After looking a bit rusty during his first few weeks in Major League Soccer, Reid has managed to find his footing and has looked comfortable, starting five of the team's last eight games. According to MLS Soccer, he's done enough to convince Kansas that a permanent deal could be of interest. The situation isn't advanced at all just yet. It's more a case of the MLS side liking what they've seen from Reid. There's no option to buy in their loan deal, which expires at the end of December, so things would have to be agreed between them, West Ham and Reid himself.”

Bit of an upset MU winning away in Kansas.

Tough ask now for MU playing next in Seattle on Monday. Sounders with an extra 2 days off and at home.

SKC with plenty of early scoring chances, incl Boxall goal line clearance.

All the goals in the first half.

Think I read somewhere (Flying Kiwis) that there were rumours of West Ham calling Reid back to the UK from this loan deal. Rumours.

I found this interesting:

$4.6 million. That’s how much Winston Reid was actually paid in 2020. Sporting KC were reportedly only on the hook for about $700,000 or 15 percent of that total. Peter Vermes said, “We didn’t exercise the option for a very specific reason.” It has to be the wages. It’s possible Reid returns, West Ham United even indicated they’d let him go on a free transfer. But the road block would be his wages. Why would he come to MLS to make a fraction of his former deal (which is still guaranteed until the summer of 2023)? And why would Sporting KC put Designated Player (DP) money into an injury-prone 32-year-old center back?

Slaven Bilić was Hammers gaffer at the time of Reid's big 6 year re-signing in 2023.

There has to be times when the accountants at West Ham must just shake their heads. Winnie was already injury prone before that terrible injury at Swansea in early 2018.

Hope he sends his agent a nice Christmas gift every year.

From this week's Flying Kiwis.

https://twitter.com/WestHam/status/135010294553519...

"Could it be... it is! Winston Reid just casually popping up in a training video at West Ham. The fella had his option to buy declined by Sporting Kansas City at the end of the MLS season, though the manager there spoke of his intention to try and bring Reid back on a similar sort of loan deal as he had in 2020. Well, he barely spoke at all but that was the read-between-the-lines hint. Reid still has ages left on that massive contract he signed a couple years back so a permanent deal would be expensive but there’s also no set date for the start of the 2021 MLS season leaving Winston in limbo.

Hence he’s popped back over the pond to London where he and his family live – remember that his family didn’t accompany him to Kansas City, what with the pandemic and all. And while he’s in town, as a contracted player for the club, there’s no reason not to get amongst the Hammers footy even if it’s just to stay fit. Having said that... it’s January so they could register him for Premier League duties during the window if they wanted. It’s an option.

Reid hasn’t played for West Ham since March 2018 when he busted his knee against Swansea. He missed Manuel Pellegrini’s entire tenure as Hammers boss and then when David Moyes took over it was quickly decided that Reid would need to pursue other options. But lots has changed since then. Reid played regularly and he played well for SKC, proving his fitness. West Ham have been playing with a back three in defence so numbers are important... one of the regular starters at the moment is Craig Dawson who is on loan from Watford as a bit of emergency cover (in fairness he’s done very well – more on him in a sec coz he clashed with Chris Wood this week).

David Moyes said this at a press conference a month ago: “I’m due to have a discussion with Winston and his agent. We’ve given him some time off after their [Sporting KC] season just finished. I don’t think he can be involved until January because of the ruling, so we’ll have a chat in the next few weeks and see what their thoughts are and we’ll see what we come up with.”

Hmm. So you’re saying there’s a chance!?"

From Flying Kiwis. Reid still training with the Hammers for now.

There’s another quick sighting of Winnie in there as the team does their warm-up jog so he’s still hanging around. No sign of him in any matchday squads lately though. Not even the FA Cup game against Doncaster which would have been his best avenue back in yet David Moyes went with the youth approach instead as he handed out three first team debuts: including to 17 year old defender Jamal Baptiste (apparently the top talent in the academy atm) and also goalie Nathan Trott who was on loan at AFC Wimbledon playing ahead of Nik Tzanev last season.

With a week left before the transfer window SLAMS SHUT we should get some kind of resolution soon as to what Winston’s next steps will be... hopefully. Another loan to MLS feels most likely – the MLS have just confirmed that the new season will start in early April.

How far has Reid’s quality dropped from his peak a few years ago? Liverpool fan podcasts keep talking about the need to sign a makeshift CB at all costs, and how they’re so lacking in experience at the back now that even a slow old veteran would be a step up from the kids they’re playing. I keep wondering whether Reid could fill that gap until the end of the season, although I know it’s a big stretch if he’s not even making the squad to play Doncaster!

He's still be quality I'm sure. But I also remember highlights of one MLS game, where he was almost gassed by an opponent, only just hung in there enough. At his age, and injury history you'd know he would not be the player he was.

I'm sure with his huge weekly wages - the Hammers will consider a loan deal anywhere.

Yeah it's definitely a stretch given his lack of pace, particularly given Liverpool's style of play. All depends how desperate they are I guess. I just wondered whether a short term deal at a high profile club was the swansong of choice for All Whites CBs in the premier league. Though I suspect that Nelsen playing under Redknapp was a slightly better fit that Reid playing under Klopp.

would be great for Winston if he ended up at Liverpool, they are in need of CB, although maybe not one as injury prone as REid.

Stays in London, reasonable chance of playing time, and a side chasing promotion to EPL, who if they go up and keep him on, would then have some cash to help West Ham with his pricey wages.

Looks a good deal at face value.

From this week's Flying Kiwis. Dead pan as always.

Having Reid in the UK rather than stateside, should increase the chances of a Euro AWs side being strong enough, to try secure some friendlies in that 31st May - 8th June window.

Bought on as a 86th min sub in a 3-2 win over Bristol City (9th).

Score 3-1 when he came. City scored their 2nd at 90 mins.

Brentford 3rd with a game in hand on 2nd placed Swansea, who are 2 points ahead of them.

Danish connection at Bees. Coach and 4 players from Denmark in match day squad. Reid will be able to practise his 2nd language.

Brentford are actually 2nd one point ahead of Swansea and 4 points behind Norwich with a game in hand. Would be interesting to see if Reid would consider a permanent move if Brentford get automatic promotion.

It would probably come down to money. He's on massive wages at West Ham and from memory still has 2 if not 3 years left on his contract.
