why can't a wellington team play all of its home games at wellington?? please don't let the nix become another team that turns into a NZ side (e.g. Auckland warriors become NZ warriors). if we start playing more "home" games in different cities, that is exactly what will happen.
just read the above article. no matter what Tony P says, he can't stop the mind-set of both NZ and Australian supporters of A-League clubs. give it a couple more seasons and there will be no more Wellington Phoenix. we will once again be another national team in a domestic league scarf.man2010-02-07 08:55:33

Tony's "Auckland" comments show a fundamental lack of understanding;
Whitby boy2010-02-07 09:09:28
that "Auckland" is the kiss of death for anything football. He sees a city of a million people and big stadiums and dollar signs fill his eyes - welcome to the world of the Kings and Knights.
how insulting it is to many Wellington supporters to take their team to Auckland. Many, I suspect, could live with a game in ChCh so Terry can make a few $s but Auckland is a bridge way too far. We are not Auckland anymore.
I have an emotional relationship with the Nix and I do not expect my partner to be whored around the country and you won't buy me off with a couple of free tickets to games I will not go to.
Very very disappointing.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

I agree with scarf.man, You don't want Wellington turning into a NZNix (but got a nice ring about it tho'). When you listen to NRL commentaries and hear, e.g. Manly vs NZ - the implication is country vs club, and the Warriors are giving the country a bad name (well they have been recently).
Just had a thought, maybe we should send the Warriors to play down there - The Wellington Warriors but that's another thread on another website.
.but please can we have a game up here (please....)

Personally I have enjoyed this seasons away "home" games, Palmy was Palmy and Chch was a great weekend.
But Auckland have demonstrated time and again that they aren't interested in football so please explain to me why they deserve a game (having the biggest population isn't a reason).
I certainly wouldn't go.

The fact that they are probably the best Fairweather supporters in the land would mean you'd have to hope that the Nix were on a 4 game winning streak.

"No. That's a definite no. We're Wellington Phoenix and we'll always remain Wellington Phoenix FC. We're talking one, maybe two games," he said. "Wellington's our home and we're not forgetting for one minute what the fans of Wellington Phoenix have done from day one. We still have 12 or 13 games, potentially, at Westpac Stadium and our No 1 priority is making sure we look after out season ticket holders and fans from Wellington. There should be no concern from them at all."
Nothing about Auckland what so ever. Nothing definite. Stop feeding the troll. And the fact that it's the Sunday News says an awful lot.

On Stuff, he is quoted as saying:
"I'm not discounting Auckland, whatever happened with former clubs was ages ago. We get a lot of fans travelling down from Auckland. They've got some very, very good stadiums and with the redevelopment for the (rugby) World Cup there could be an opportunity to play games there and maybe bring one of the bigger teams, a Melbourne or a Sydney."

Well let's hope it's all rubbish, but given there are direct quotes from TP saying we are going to become the NZ Phoenix in all but name with only the non-Wellington Cities to be decided, I'm not confident.
And to think I was feeling upbeat us having made the playoffs last night.
I just observed elsewhere:
Last season, games outside of Wellington was a topic and quickly became a no-go. This season, we were told it was only happening for two games because there was no choice. Next season, we're giving up two games willingly. What will it be the season after?

If this is confirmed, and they take ANY home games away from Wellington again, that's the last of my season membership.
Stop trying to play tricks with words Tony P, you just said you're trying to turn the Wellington Phoenix into the New Zealand Phoenix.
The Ring of Dirt debacle in Palmy this year showed how badly things can turn around when you ruin an unbeaten streak at home.
The Phoenix could have had the record for longest unbeaten home streak. They could do the exact same next year, and Tony P is talking about voluntarily risking f**king that opportunity up.
This is a very slippery slope, if anything, will cause the Phoenix to lose more season members than they did this season.

And while people are mentioning the Auckland Warriors, make no mistake, the Auckland Warriors are still the Auckland Warriors.
The only time the Auckland Warriors play outside of Auckland is when an AUSTRALIAN NRL team plays a HOME game in NZ.
The Canterbury Bulldogs had a series of their HOME games in Wellington against the Auckland Warriors.
The West Tigers had a HOME game in Christchurch against the Auckland Warriors.
You can name your team whatever you want, at the end of the day, the decision on where you play tells people where your business is.

Your right. Auckland don't 'deserve' a game but if Auckland ( like Chch) can put some money back in Terry pockets, whos to deny him ( except the selfish ).
When Welly start making money they'll have a right to whinge, but untill then, stfu

Too many threads going on this - anyway here's my thoughts from another thread.
The RFU would be an interesting case study for Tony. They too went down the route of short term (thinking) revenue maximisation. They were happy to sell Joe Blogs season tickets for S12 and NPC but when it came to big games (i.e. tests) the corporates and travel agents were always at the front of the queue. This happened for a number of years, when economic times were good and the corporates coughed up. Slowly but surely Joe Blogs got pissed off with being taken advantage of and the number of season ticket holders dropped and is still dropping. Sure there were other factors that contributed to the decline but I have spoken to a number of ex season ticket holders and the arrogance of the RFU and the disrespect shown to season ticket holders is a common theme in their decisions not to renew. Now times are tough, and the corporates have tightened their belts, the RFU is crawling back to Joe Blogs to try and get him to rejoin - by offering him the opportunity to pay an arm and a leg for test and WC tickets (yes they never learn).
Whitby boy2010-02-07 16:45:50The mistakes the RFU made were not understanding that they had a relationship with their season ticket holders - it was not simply a financial transaction - and also not understanding that maximising short term revenue would be at the expense of long term supporters.
What Tony is talking about is taking us down the same road.
The Nix has a relationship with its core supporters and it is based, in part, on a shared passion for, and pride in, Wellington. We are the Wellington Phoenix.
You screw with that relationship and the Wellington identity at your peril.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

This is exactly how I view being a season ticket holder of the Nix and, when I was still back home, Brighton & Hove Albion.
It is why the whole taking home games away is, for me, a threat to how I feel about whether it's worth renewing my season ticket. If your wife cheats on you, you leave. If your football team cheats on you, you leave.

How many Aucklanders come down to Wellington to watch the Phoenix? or even support them?
To me they do not deserve a game for many many years for all the reasons shared above. Please Tony P, whatever you are taking stop taking them
