this event is crp. apart from fielding the worst team in the world to play Galaxy in a demo match, jumping on Radio Sports bandwagon to try and increase sales when they do f all for footy most of the time is comical. Id be pssed if i bought a full rpice ticket and now theyre doing 2 for 1.

And why are the media numpties asking him about rugby ffs?

When it was first talked about, I thought I might wander along but the more I heard about it, the more Mickey Mouse it got. Waste of time and effort.

They are even trying to sell the fact that there is a 'Celebrity' match on as a curtain-raiser to boost ticket sales. Hmm, the likes of Carol Hirschfield (?spelling) and Monty Betham kicking a ball around then Goldenballs and his mates going through the motions for 90 minutes, and for only $85. No thanks.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I hear that those who purchased a ticket at full price can now get a second ticket for free.

What I don't understand is why isn't Christian Karembeu getting more attention? He is much more interesting than Becks.

Two-for-one Becks tickets for all buyers Newstalk ZB - December 5, 2008, 11:42 am

The pulling power of soccer star David Beckham has failed to live up to all the hype.

The Auckland Regional Council is battling to fill up Mt Smart Stadium for tomorrow night's match between the LA Galaxy and the Oceania All Stars. Anyone who has purchased a ticket to the game can now get another one for free.

ARC Parks general manager Lance Vervoort admits the council received complaints from people who had paid full price, when it offered a two-for-one deal this morning.

"We've had up to 15,000 tickets go out - and we actually want to fill the stadium . . . we want to get up to capacity, up to 32,000. We want as many Aucklanders as possible to take the opportunity to see these players."

Mr Vervoort is confident the latest offer will fill the stadium.

The same reason Ruud Gullit got no attention here last year. Ignorant public.

Three for me, and two for them.

1] what a farce, oceania 11 when some like Davids have nothing to do with the region.

2] 2 for one deal.

3] 16,600? WTF - Aucklanders supporting their football like they did with their teams?? Surely there is more than 16,600 football playing adults in Auckland? After all, they keep reminding us how they have a population of over 1 million.

4] For an Oceania team it was intersting to see that our oceania neighbours did not support their countrymen playing.

5] last i heard on the radio yesterday afternoon, they were giving tickets away just to boost crowd numbers, so I wonder how many of those 16,600 actually paid for their ticket.

6] I saw an advert on telly saying that tickets started off at $45 upwards. Didn't we all pay $88 for ours??

7] We all expressed concern when it was announced and yet again, most of Auckland supported our concerns by not showing.

8] I feel for our fellow footballing fans whom come onto this site from Auckland, they were let down by their fellow Aucklanders big time.

9] A very interesting match report on the home page here, just the tone of it is so negative, the whole thing seems to be a big waste of time.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Refer my post on the NZFC / OFC forum, Lonegunmen - the moderators need to do a bit of tidying up, as there are threads on this topic all over the shop!

I think it's a real shame the thing tanked.

We need more of these sorts of initiatives in NZ, and this is just going to make people gunshy.

Booo Auckland for not getting out for it, but also booo ARC for putting on a very poorly run event (flat balls...wtf!)

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

To be fair, Old was better than most of the players on the Oceania team (but still not an Oceania All Star in my books either).

didn't want to say it myself...nah, it was a balls up across the park

Nix took the major risk in 07-THAT is the major difference

and noone at WCC wanted this venture to fail, the implications for the events industry could be grave and far reaching..we shared info with them about the training day, but the product was not as fresh and the discerning public smelt it.

i switched off at half time - a good decision in hindsight

Got very messy in the second half, looked like noone was enjoying the game (players). The ref was rather star struck I though and didn't help with the potential 'spectacle' that the game should have been. He was so far up the Galaxy's arse..........

What was up with Bos clearly doing his rag at halftime in the Sheds? And someone should have told him he is a rolemodel and that on national television he should have kept his shirt on.... think of the children!

Same ref that did the LA Galaxy v Nix game, in front of twice as many people.

this whole episode is mind boggling. who on earth was advising ARC? everybody I talked to about this when the event was only a rumour agreed it was a foolhardy venture. Last year was all about media hype. the press went bananas here and in Aust over the novelty of having Beckham in town. That was never going to happen again. and the game was always going to be very difficult to market. unlike the phoenix, nobody identifies with an "Oceania XI". The risks and challenges to this project were so obvious - its hard to fathom how the decision to go ahead was made - particularly with ARC carrying the risk.

Some good points here about this fiasco. I live in Auckland and never considered going.
As for the people blaming Auckland football fans for the poor attendance they need to consider in exactly the same circumstances would they have gone?

The people saying it is Football fans who messed this one up need only look at the crowds the girls got only about three weeks ago

Those idiots are the same people who say Yellow Fever are responsible for poor attendances at Phoenix matches

Those kind of people also don't have better sperm.

Well it was actually Richardson on Radio Sport this morning saying the issue was largely a 'soccer' issue, he normally is quite sensible. I would consider myself a 'soccer' person and I actively avoided watching the game.
Kent Johns was saying something similar and his basic thoughts were the WC playoff next year will be the real test for Football fans in NZ.
Some strange logic
