However. In eggball's defence, my first match was in 1983 at Lancaster Park (Wgtn vs canty) -  a feckin 'orrible and scary experience.

My next one was in the S12 - Arthritic Park Canes vs Highlanders (a right stomping of the Highlanders) and as  recall it was similar to what the nix is today.  VERY family orientated and lots of the fairer sex (oggling at the eggball players).  That was a great atmosphere as were the handful of S12 games I went to over the next few years.

I guess that atmosphere was lost several seasons ago.

Anyway, I don't care how it (S14) goes because I've now got my true passion back on my doorstep and it's wonderful to re-ignite it after all those years in the wilderness.

I'm an ex boxer, rower and inline hockey player but none of those sports suit being pulled along on a wave of crowd support. And lol my fave sport is K1 but I'm really enjoying watching SOCCER so you guys can just tease me as much as you want and I'll keep growing my interest in this odd but exciting game

haha I'm also an ex-journalist but somehow the boxing and inline hockey didn't totally knock my brain to dust. And what's wrong with rowing...

Nothing wrong with rowing.

Most of the rowers I've met seem like their brains are dust.

Nah they're just tired. When I first moved to Welly I'd be at the club at 5am, train to 8am, work till 4pm, gym to5.30pm then row till dark - every work day. and in weekends train longer morning and night and sleep all arvo in between

Boy when I was younger I accidently dated a rower. She was alright but because I had the names mixed up I asked the wrong sister on the phone. I didn't have the heart to change because it was all last minute arrangements.

Sorry I had to share that, I couldn't help but be reminded of that.

Anyway, rowers are not daft, they just seem draft initially because of the hours of practise. Them and swimmers. They rise early and sleep early and you never get to see them but once they get a chance to party, they go hard. Well that what I remembered then.

Party hard indeed - I learnt to drink hard as a teenager always going back and forth frm on bus trips to rowing camp and regattas. And rowers make it their lifes work to always drink Twizel dry after the NZ champs

You've got to also take into account that the makeup of spectators is very different between rugby and football in NZ. Phoenix gets way more family groups and females than rugby ever has. And the atmosphere even just walking along the concourse pre-game is vastly different. soccer fans are happier and more chatty and excited.

I'd never been to a soccer game prior to 3 months ago and won tickets and dragged another female friend along and we loved it. if we'd won tickets to rugby we prob wd have given them away and yet now we are converts and come partly for the atmosphere

I was at the Hurricanes game over the weekend and saw quite a lot of women and families.   I think the crowds has a very similar split.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/sport/hurricanes/6573093/Hurricanes-Flying-Squadron-takes-off

A new Hurricanes supporters club is trying to gather support for the region's Super Rugby team.

Flying Squadron founder Evan Belford wants to create something akin to the Yellow Fever supporters' group, which are such a feature of Phoenix football matches at Westpac Stadium.

Saturday night's Super Rugby clash with the Highlanders will be the Flying Squadron's first chance to show how their chanting and singing rates compared to the football folks'.

Flying Squadron members will be able to site in Aisle 33 of Westpac Stadium which will now be known as The Hangar at Hurricanes' games.

Tonight they are holding a meet-up at The Green Man pub from 4pm which will be attended by 10 Hurricanes players .

oh dear, oh dear.

I have just spent 10 mins looking at their really whacky photos and songsheets but still cannot get my head around what the f**k a Flying Squadron has got to do with a Hurricane?  You would never try to fly in a Hurricane - that would be mental.

Hmmm. Their 3 Flying Squad photos consist of one photo of a Hurricane and TWO of Tempests.

Edit: Anyway - they better not come around to our manor wearing their colours or there'll be trouble (of the NQF kind).

At least they are going to be based in Aisle 33, well away from our turf in 22

They'll get told to shut up, by grumpy old rugby fans. Is Aisle 33 near half way? If it is, they definetly will.

A couple of times I've been told to shut up at rugby games (I wasnt chanting or anything). Though maybe if its more official, that won't happen...But I don't see it.

I am sure you are aware, but the word yellow is in the name of the tropical virus, and the main colour of the supporters group (hats, t-shirts, etc) as it is the cities predominate colour.

Maybe I am being a bit thick, but I cannot see what Flying Squadrons or airplanes have to do with the Hurricanes or Wellington.

In fact, this is scaring me now - I am sure that there is something blindingly obvious that I am not seeing, and when it is explained will make me look like a complete moron.  If that happens, it will make a massive dent in the popularity and respect that I have on here.

Tenuous connection, but the Hurricanes mascot is pilot - Captain Hurricane.

Gave Jerry the what-for in the Battle of Britain!!!

Although, if that was what they were thinking with the name "Hurricanes" how come the club logo isn't a plane? And if they were thinking of the weather events then why not Cyclones, as that is what they are actually called in this part of the world?

You have to pay $30 to join their club before you can even post a comment on their forums about how $30 is a rip-off.

Not worth it.

Exclusive seating at home games in 'The Hangar' (Aisle 33 at Wespac Stadium)

Does that mean you can't sit there with them if you don't pay the membership?

It felt like a kapa haka mixed with cheerleader group for the hurricanes. Was odd viewing. It may catch on though, who knows.
