I think Matt *almost* makes some good points but the fact that the A-League will be awarded more ACL places even with us there kind of kills his whole justification for writing the hate-piece.
btw he's alright in real life and personal attacks etc. aren't really needed - everyone has an opinion and that is fine (unless the guys name is Diego's Son) I can see why some Aussies get their panties in a twist about us but what annoys me is that they usually fabricate reasons as to why we are so detrimental for the league.
This was the best post in that 442 thread, I think, and Matt would do well to take a leaf out of this guys book instead of writing Andrew Bolt-esque blogs.

agree with aspects of both sides of the argument.
It's impossible to suggest that the Phoenix have not had a positive impact on the A-League - they're one of the success stories of last season. Unfortunately their value before then was debateable; the Kingz were a laughing stock.
On the flipside, Matt is right in suggesting that our insistence on helping a club from outside our confederation isn't damaging our image with the AFC. Although I don't really see how it damages the AFC per se, it's certainly not something they want us doing - the wording of their 'acknowledgement' indicates that very strongly.
So, where is the middle ground? I think FFA is right in keeping the Phoenix (at least for the short term) as they're strong, well-run club that contribues a lot to the A-League at a time when it's genuinely needed. FIFA obviously like us helping out the OFC as they've come in to bat for the FFA on the issue of the licence. Hopefully our continued assistance with NZF and the OFC pays off when voting comes for the 2022 World Cup.
The ACL, as a tournament, isn't suited to our current football climate. It's played after our season proper, and heavily favours teams who can flash the cash and sign the best teams - both huge factors in a tournament like this. So I think it makes sense that we're supporting a club that supports the A-League.
In the short term I don't see any reason to get rid of the Phoenix. In the long term, it depends on what happens to the OFC. If they are absorbed by AFC then the problem goes away. If not then the FFA will need to periodically reassess what is best for its flagship, the A-League. For now, what's best is the keeping the Phoenix.

There were a lot of good posts in that thread (and more continue to pour in nearly a week after filing - pretty successful blog). I have learned a lot from it, and there are some things that I probably would have worded differently looking back to better explain the message. The worst thing about writing a piece like that is having Diego's Son try to defend you and put words in your mouth.
I disagree that it was Andrew Bolt-esque or a hate piece, and I think that you of all could attest that I'm not some scum-feeding racist hate monger unless of course I've severely overestimated our acquaintanceship/friendship.

Yeah - no doubt - I just think you went about it the wrong way. Even the title of the blog seemed like it was designed to piss Welly supporters off (even though I don't think you intended it to be so)
I guess 'hate-piece' was a bit strong. It's more that Welly supporters are so sick of this kind of stuff coming out of Australia when we think we have helped the league and are helping the league more every year.
I said Andrew Bolt-esque because his articles are usually designed to promote heated debate even if the content of it is a bit off. If nothing else, your blog has promoted that sort of discussion.

There you go.Another example of what the Phoenix bring to the league. So why would you want to get rid?
It would appear that the majority of Australians understand that the Phoenix are a positive and should stay. A change from three years ago.
Back on topic:
Tim Tams are $3.50 CAD here. Outrageous.

Is that expensive? I have no idea what the Kiwi Konversion rate is. They go for $3.32 AUD a pack over here.
Getting back off topic:
I suppose that I shouldn't have an opinion because it's not the same as the "majority"?

Was in the supermarket earlier today. The Tim Tams were tempting me with their siren song, beckoning and teasing me seductively. I walked towards them mesmerized, and stood there just staring at them in all their divine glory. I reached out my hand, almost touched that which would make my existence complete, and then I snapped out of it...I could physically feel the pain of not being united with the glorius Tim Tam, could sense - barely perceptibly, but could still sense the pleasure and delight which I had just abandoned with my stubborness, my fear, perhaps even my timidity....today was not the day. But the day will come. And I will have the Tim Tam and the Tim Tam will have me. And life will be good.el grapadura2010-08-04 21:14:30

Matt, in your next blog can you write about why participating the ACL is more important to Australian Football than improving the A-League, there really is quite a logic gap in your argument. Perhaps one or two lines about what it has done for the clubs who have participated in it...
Tim Tams are imported here to the UK but are horribly overpriced. I have to specifically avoid shops that stock them, it's too tempting

I'm due to file tonight and have about 3 articles that I have half started. One on why people shouldn't freak out about pre-season friendly attendances, one on why Melbourne Heart is a dumb move and one on how I don't really hate Kiwi's, I just refuse to buy into the recent hype around Phoenix and the all-whites.
I'll let Yellow Fever decide which one gets finished.

It was a completely different question. It was pointing out that the alleged 2009 review related to a time period where the A-league still had 8 teams. Thus the nix couldn't have cost Gold Coast a place in the A-league.
