[QUOTE] Anyone who grew up in NZ in the 70's and played football would know about the animosity shown towards the sport and the players by the rugby-heads.

Deaker is part of that generation (actually even before that -but still consistent with the prevailing ethos then) and as such is probably incapable of seeing the sport as anything but incomprehensible and/or a threat to the national game.

The level of angst that these sort of people show must mean that football is starting to come of age here in New Zild.

Message of the day, I did play FOOTBALL here during the 70's and used to go and watch Stop Out in the then National League. Yes, FOOTBALLERS and FOOTBALL fans were treated like crap - poofters game hugging and kissing (Let's forget about Graham Henry kissing who on the cheek at a Press conference eh?).

Rugby was the mans game and the AB's were made up mainly of farmers not the gym bunnies of today. Deaker really does epitomise the attitudes of those years. They are afraid, very afraid of recognising what Rugby's true stance in world sport is.

Rugby is very much a minority sport on the global stage and football is played in 210 countries and territories. Some Media in this country should recognise football for what it is, a viable alternative that Kiwi players can be very good at, just like they can be very good at Rugby too.

All these are true. It is all about money. In the late 60's and up to the mid 70's there were regular local games on TV1 ( The NZFA had to pay to have these games shown. All of a sudden rugby is on and the TV PAID the rugby union.
The only way to get through to that w**ker Deaker is for all the football supporters to keep phoning him and asking him about football in general, because otherwise he will continue his usual crap that rugby is the number 1 sport.

Great quote from Deaks on "Deaker on Sport" just now...

Did anyone else see the Deaker on sport with Fallon, Adshead and vicelich last night? What an embarassement Deaker was! kept on saying how 'soccer' wasn't his go, kept saying stuff like 'well John knows more about that than you do Kevin" or vice versa and was pratting on about how outclassed we were against bahrain. I'd hate to think what tourists from europe would have thought of if they watched that interview.

Interesting considering he said hes never watched more than a half of a game of football in his life, and he only woke up to watch the last half hour. Totally informed comment from him obviously. Is what annoys me,a so called sports journo having never seen the biggest sport in the world taking any opportunity to bag it,despite having no knowledge.

How long can someone in his position keep saying 'I don't know much about football'...

I noted last night he had to get someone to put into a Rugby Context how important the loss of Kirk Penny was from the Breakers. So he told the viewers that losing Penny was like the AB's losing McCaw and Carter - does EVERYTHING have to relate to rugby.

I mean i know next to nothing (and honestly have no interest) about Motor Racing, but if i had an hour long SPORTS Show on SKY and hosted 2 days and a few evenings on the Nationwide Sports Talkback Show i'm certain i'd educate myself about it.

The guy is a fool...

I don't know much about F1 but this Button guy - sort of like a young McCaw:  Consistently good performance and hungry.

I don't know much about golf, but this Woods guy - very adaptable to each situation and cool under pressure- like McCaw

I don't know much about boxing, but the way Tua stamped his authority on the match early on - very dominant like McCaw

I don't know much about rowing but those lady twins - sort of like two McCaws... only female

I don't know much about netball, but Irene van Dyk - great percentage play - just like McCaw

Deaker is a senile old fool, and the sooner Sky TV stop giving him a soap box to show his lack of knowledge about everything, the better for the rest of us.

They should make The Crowd Goes Wild a 2 hour show, and drop Deaker altogether. At least with CGW, they cover different sports with more good intent than Deaker could ever manage.

I caught parts of his rants on sunday, basically he's changed his tune on football, apprently now he's tired off rugby and the boring games is giving us - ie the Italy v AB's,he evidently loves soccer now and thought the game was awesome blah blah blah ......turncoat.

That sounds about right for Deaker - a real fairweather friend.

His opinions change with the formbook. I recall him being very much the same with rugby league and basketball when those codes succeeded against the odds.

For mine, he lacks three things which are critical in his role:
1 - credibility (as outlined above);
2 - balance (he's too polarising with his opinions, and should really present the facts and let the listener form their own view);
3 - a sense of perspective (the frequent praising of mediocrity when what has been achieved doesn't even begin to compare with previous achievements of a highly praiseworthy nature).

Cheers,

JR

Not surprisingly, Newstalk ZB have been a bit of a mixed bag this week:

Hosking: Now loves soccer.
Leighton Smith: "Soccer players are wimps...and the ball just goes round in circles".
Larry Williams: "Never been really into soccer.  0-0, 1-0, 2-1 and all that"...but liked the All Whites' result.
Deaker: Hates rugby.  Soccer fan.
Willie Lose: Concerned with what this result means to the "national identity" and what it means to be a "Kiwi".
David Chote: "MARK PASTON - YOU CHAMPION".
Jason Pine: "THE FINAL WHISTLE BLOWS AND IT'S FULL STEAM AHEAD SOUTH AFRICA".

Who was criticising? People are allowed to be surprised at such a massive turnaround, and my post was meant as a joke playing on that. That first statement of yours is a ridiculous case of you being on a high horse, calling people ridiculous and thinking you're better. Uber lame.

Did anyone else listen to MD on Sunday? I think it was sometime between 1 and 2:30pm and he was chatting to John Key. They were talking about sport development and stuff. They touched on the size of the crowd at the Phoenix game on Saturday night. I can't remember exactly what was said.

ps - I tried to find the file on the Radio Sport website but I've got a mac and it won't let me play the audio files

Watching Deaker now - after a bit on the IPL, the first question to Miles Davis is 'Right, soccer is on a roll, is it a threat to rugby'?

Miles was balanced as he generally is these days.  He's realistic enough to know it's not going to happen and that we should just enjoy a growing place in the hearts and minds.
