New A League Teams for 2009/10

Is it just me or a gold coast coming in here and thinking that they can pinch all the talent from the current a league teams as well as bringing back some current australian representatives.

They seem to think that they are the perfect club and that everyone will want to go there.

It really pisses me off.

They look as if they will replace Sydney as the a leagues glamour club as well considering they have a private jet and all that

but what about the Northern Thunder anyone know anything about that

I agree, already they are becoming the most hated club in the league. If a playboy lifestyle is what they are advertising to get players to their club, then playboy personality players is what they'll get.

I get the feeling that none of the current clubs are going to like them but I saw the article about FFA not doing anything about gold coast approaching players before October 1 because no clubs have lodged a complaint.

That sucks!!!!

It would have been nice to see them have to pay a bit of a fine or something already!

Yeah, I don't think many people are going to like Gold Coast apart from those that live there. I certainly won't. They come across as arrogant and a bit naive. Thinking that because they have lots of money they can buy all the good players and rule the league.

Agreed.

I already dislike them.

As opposed to other teams that complain that they're broke and coming last?

It's professional sport... success and confidence breed same... if they come in and say they expect to be sh*te for the first few years, who's going to want to support and/or play for them? Look at Tasman - one of their own unions won't support them lol

The facts are... they are backed by an extremely wealthy man who does expect and demand success given the resources he's making available to the organisation. And yes, money does matter in professional sport... ask a Leeds/Toon/M-sh*tty fan... not to mention Messrs Bond, O'Neal, Cairns, Armstrong, McCullum, Foreman, Warne, etc...

I know that TPS is alive and well, but a bit of reality doesn't hurt does it?

(and yes, I know I'm generalising, so please don't throw me to the lions with every example of sporting success by some one/team that wasn't necessarily the most financially successful lol)

Let the beating begin...

I love the fact that finally someone has the balls to come out and say "hey look at me, I have heaps of cash and I'm not afraid to use it to get what I want" Good on the owner of GCU. Sure I reckon everyone will hate him, but I doubt he'll care, he's going to have the "best" team he can get and be happy with it. I have my doubts how it will work on field, but sometimes I wish we (kiwis) dropped the underdog tag and decided to go in as though we are the faves to win things more often.

I don't think Clive Palmer actually gets how the A-League, or a football club, really works. He seems to have the attitude that great players make great teams. It's either that or he is a real narcissist who has to have his club in the news constantly. He's about as plastic as the Gold Coast itself.

He's far from plastic CL... if you were in his position what would you differently? Would you put your money into a team and not utilise all the resources you have to achieve success? I wouldn't think so either

His background is actually quite interesting, he certainly wasn't given his money on a plate - he's worked for it, and sure, he's had some luck... but he's worked hard to get it... he isn't one of the plastic Goldie society set... he also gives a lot of his time (and cash) to a lot of other people who need it... and by all accounts (I know a couple of ppl who've met him - one several times) he's actually quite down to earth and not at all ostentatious or arrogant in respect to his wealth or success (my mate had met him over half a dozen times before she knew who he was or anything about him, he was just another guy who drove a nice Commodore lol).

The A-League is following a model of individual ownership... this model is designed to attract individuals with resources (that would be cash) to burn and therefore historical business successes which will hopefully translate into successful and sustainable clubs, and, therefore a successful and sustainable competition... this is driven by Uncle Frank, himself a successful businessman with a record of achievement (and no, I'm not saying it's flawless... Knights/Glory anyone? lol).

Seems to be the way a lot of pro sports are going worldwide... rightly or wrongly...

Oh well... cue the

Okay, well he's obviously not a narcissist but I do question his knowledge of how a football team works, beceause as others have pointed out in several threads around the place, he seems to be trying to throw money at players and the Gold Coast 'lifestyle' (specifically the sun, the surf, and the girls) and he could really be running the risk of building a team of money-grabbers with littlle real commitment to the club.

lol... I know

And his knowledge of football would undoubtedly be minimal... and I agree with your sentiment CL... didn't mean to come across too harsh... lol

PS: Sun and surf aren't at all bad

Surely every player knows it's better to suffer in Wellington's wind and rain than lap up the sun on a Gold Coast beach?

They all want to harden up, right?

The fact the guy is putting up the money, does not mean he has to know anything about the game.He just likes football. The American owners of MU knew nothing about football when they took over.

I have no problem with him not knowing much about football, and I think it is fantastic someone with money and an interest in fotoball is wanting to back a club. What I object to is his assumption that his money will win them the league in their first season.

Its a bit like Thaskin at Man City. He had lots of money and Sven guided city to 9th when he was aiming for at least 10th. He sacked him at the end of the season. Wonder what will happen to the Gold Coast coach after a year?

It's nothing like City... a Salary cap means you can have all the money in the world but you can only throw it at one player.

I meant City last season when Sven was sacked after he acheived his goals when Thaskin was having too high expectations and it sounds like the Gold Coast coach may be sacked if he doesnt live up to the expectation of the owner

Well one thing is forsure, they can play in the ACL(asian champ league), something Smeltz would be considering.
Smeltz for the Gold Coast i say!!!!.
Look at the Nixs? Where can the Nixs take you? Wooden spoon anyone? Oh maybe win the league one day but thats it. You can go futher in your football future with a team like GC FC or Nth QLD FC.

If you hadn't already seen it.

What sort of time do they usually announce their playing strip, I'd imagine not until next year.

And I thought the Fury one was horrid. What pro footballer would wear that on their shirt simply for the price of private jet trips and a mentaly unstable boss??

Why do the new teams insist on having the stereotypical American logos that just include a football with flames/rainbows/streams following it?! What's wrong with going with a European style badge like ours?? North Queensland could have gone with a circular shaped emblem with a picture of the North Queensland area within it, it's simpe.

I don't know . . . one league out of the small sample size above definitely seems to have the most Americanized logos at first blush.

Cough, cough . . . HAL, cough cough!

You sure the Fury, Roar, Glory, GC United and the rainbowed Adelaiders aren't just stereotypically Australian?

Even by the old NASL this is fairly sad, and the roar isn't much better. Maybe its a Queensland thing?

Jacksonville Tea Men

This might sound f**ked but I think the A-League logos look more "American" than the current American logos...
