Really interesting article posted on The Spinoff about the Racism in Football in Aotearoa Report.

The kind of behaviour discussed in the article is pretty horrific. Hopefully this report can be the start of some cultural upheaval in NZ football circles.

The Nix and the Fever have had some pretty awesome inclusion campaigns and are both founded on some really great values, hopefully those values can become the standard for football in Aotearoa.

It’s really fudgeed ay. This is the results from one club! Imagine if they surveyed a league or a region.
Massive issue.
From my own experiences, it seems to be ok’ed by ex-pats who hold key roles and clubs. From then it becomes normalised.

Have seen and heard absolutely horrific stuff over the years, whether coaching at school level or watching at club level - and it hasn't gone away.  The whole "banter" argument is still trotted out as a thing,  and sadly it doesn't take much scratching on the surface for all manner of poison to ooze out... would love to say "it'll get better" but am not convinced that's true...

There is one particular club in Auckland against whom I will never play again, after they used the "coconut" slur against one of our Polynesian players. And this is Women's Div 2. What kind of a person do you have to be to think that garbage is excusable at community level?

It's telling that Manukau United are producing this report, because if you'll check that wretched hive of scum and villainy the Northern League Forum, you will see all kinds of only very mildly coded racism directed against that club.

The report, ... funded by the New Zealand arm of Unesco, based on qualitative data from 18 participants, ...
...
... Cotterill pointed to a 2021 survey that found 35% of the 8,282 participants ...

someone got ripped off if they funded a survey that interviewed 18 people.  Particularly when at the end of the article it references a more meaningful larger survey that you can write an article and justify a headline on.

Sadly more low quality clickbait "journalism" from The SpinOff

....so rather than taking issue with racism, you dislike the funding of qualitative research?? riiiiight.

Coconut is a weird one because whether or not it's acceptable seems to depend a lot on what community you belong to.

For example five of my coworkers are from Tokelau and all of them refer to themselves as Coconuts.

However using it as a derogatory term is never acceptable at all.

Yeah just saw that. So they used the survey with 18 people because it gives them a better headline? 18 is not even close to a statistically significant number.

I mean the 35% in the other survey is still unacceptable but it does put it in context with other sports.

Pretty shark journalism all around but you expect that from The Spinoff.

People like you, taking such a stand should be applauded and replicated at all levels. i’m sure you didn’t say this to get pats on the back, but I’m going to give you one anyway. I hate racism.

It helps to be principled in that that team are absolute thugs on the pitch, as well as being racists
