Six week stadium loss.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Just heard on the radio that the stadium wiil not be available to Phoenix for six weeks whilst the rugby world cup is on...  early days yet, it did say that the stadium were in talks with the A-League, but that could be interesting organising a "work around"....

Easy solution. Take a couple of games to Christchurch, maybe one to Auckland.

Any chance RWC2011/NZRU/IRB/Govt will pay our fares to any alternative venue? I heard that this was all to do with advertising and this  "clean stadium" thing.

Take a game to Hong Kong.

I know theyre all rugby mad (it is a global game after all),but am sure there are one or two football supporters hiding there somewhere...

First RWC game in wellington is 11 Sept while the last is 9 October.  I'd imagine we will have 6 away matches in a row between the start of Sept and mid October.

Either that or  play a couple of games at Mt Smart.

Basin? Or is that not an option?
Permalink Permalink

They can only move to stadia that are not in use for the world cup- so it might well be basin, or mt smart.

All the others, are effectively out the window

Ring of Dirt, Napier, Christchurch, North Harbour, all unusable.

Porirua park? also are training venues in the same boat where they have to be clean? Also I doubt the Basin will be usable as they will be preparing the field for cricket ?

Its a council ground though. And if the Phoenix bring money in to the city when they play at home you could imagine they will do what they can to keep them in the city.

Porirua park seats about 1900 people tops. zonknz2010-09-17 14:52:55

The A-league has some rule about what Stadiums can be used. One of which is lighting so would probably rule out the basin.

Porirua Park would be far too small.

I'd much rather have no home games during that 6 weeks.  Can't imagine football getting too much media coverage over that time frame, and poe public is unlikely to be attend a football match while the RWC is going on.

Yeah thats true what 2ndbest is saying about no one really going to it while the RWC is on, so maybe best for everyone to rent there homes out and be in aussie for 6 weeks of nix games :D

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

7 - 11 October 2011 is a FIFA international window so there shouldn't be any A-League games that week anyway.

Basin Reserve is definitiely not an option. It is the worst football venue ever.

A couple of away games, then a game in Chch, then another couple of away games seems reasonable.

Where you going to play in Christchurch exactly? The world cup is on there too, you know.

Basin may or may not suck, but has 11,000 capacity according to Wikipedia. It's probably the only option other than Mt Smart in all of New Zealand, given all the other venues in use.

You would think chances are there will be a FIFA window somewhere in that 6 week period. With the 2nd Sydney team looking all but dead in the water and it being highly unlikely a replacement could get up and running in time for next season you would think we would also have byes again next season.

My preference would be take 2 of our byes during the time the RoF is not available and, allowing for a FIFA window, play all 3 of the scheduled league games away in Oz. Six weeks without a home game is a long stretch but I would rather that than playing in a makeshift stadium somewhere I probably won't go anyway - remember travel and accommodation will be full and, if not, expensive due to RWC visitors.

A good excuse to get over to Oz anyway and get away from what will be wall to wall RWC.

Bonus is we would then have a nice stretch of home games.

6 weeks without matchday revenue might hurt the club though. Not sure it is as simple as not having any home games.

If melbourne can get byes during international windows, then we can get byes during this time.

True but you would think, if necessary, the FFA would come to the party with a bridging loan.

My money would be on Basin or maybe Newton Park as distant second...could be good atmosphere at Basin..12000 plus..

QEII in Christchurch is where they played those preseason matches isnt it? I've never been there so am not sure what it's like.

I've thought about this since the World Cup when all those stadiums in South Africa had to be not played on for 6 weeks - it's one of the tantrums the AFL are throwing about Australia hosting the (real) World Cup.

I think Whitby boy's got it about right (if there are only 11 teams) - two byes,  a FIFA window, and two or three away games in Australia. A home match at Mount Smart would be a sensible option if there are no byes, and there a couple of extra home games.

It's not the end of the world, and unavoidable, so there's no point anyone getting angsty over it, just gotta deal with it the best we can.

Carisbrook before it gets demolished? RWC games will be at the new stadium if its built in time. Not sure what the football scene is like down there but I am sure the students would get behind it. All Blacks play there so should therefore meet the A-league criteria.

The Basin would only work if we could convince the FFA that no floodlights is all right. Then it would have to be an afternoon match without fading light, in a time slot that suits the Australian viewing public, and if possible when there are no big RWC matches on. So it would probably be later on in the six week period, when we have daylight savings, but when the RWC gets into the business end.

Probably another fair option.

Before launching in to 20 pages of how about ......... think about;

The country's transportation and accommodation infrastructure will be already stretched by RWC visitors i.e. how are Wellington based fans going to get to ........., where are they going to stay and how much will it cost (RWC pricing will apply) ?

How many locals in ........., who have just spent their discretionary $s on RWC ticket(s), will have any $s left to pay to see the Nix.

What will season ticket holders who don't go to ........ think about losing a home game(s).

How much will playing in ............ lose the club in lost revenue because the crowd will be smaller than they would have got at the RoF and because they will also have to discount the season ticket price to make up for the loss of home game(s).

Only options I can see are local (Basin or Porirua Park) with temporary seating stands or just play away, byes & international window for the 6 week period.

I strongly prefer the latter.

Oh yeah! Stadium of 4 million and all that bollocks.

So the last week is a FIFA window anyway, stick a couple of Nix byes in there, play the rest of the games away in Oz. Job done.

But please, not the Basin, it is a sh*thole and will reflect poorly on the club and the A-League (if the FFA even let it happen).

6 weeks is a long time but we will survive.

I would love to go to the basin for 1 or 2 games. That would be a season highlight. With the World Cup on there would be plenty of overseas fans around who would like to see an A-League game. So I wouldnt want the 6 weekes to all be away games.

Dont forget Queenstown as a possible venue, plus of course Mt Smart.

Thats assuming there is byes, thats an unknown.

If there are no byes,id prefer 6 away games...but can see a home game being taken away tyo somewhere else in NZ,like what happened when the stadium was unavailable for the same period last season.

Cant begrudge them for that,6 weeks is a long long time for the FFA to be scheduling us away fixtures for.

Really?  Not convinced.

Weather is sh*t here in Sept and Oct.  Take the games to Aussie, then we can have a few more games when the weather is better.

Mt Smart or QEII seem like viable options.

Three for me, and two for them.
