i just read this article with comments from Smeltz on our last game against gold coast.
Even though he plays for the All Whites, my respect for him is dropping dramatically over this past year. which is a shame because he was my favourite player while at the phoenix and i was watching all gold coast matches this season to watch his performances.

Smeltz has been infected by the GCU "I am, it's all about me mentality".

Best thing he could do for his future is get out of that toxic environment and no I wouldn't have him back.

Smeltz is a bit of a dickhead, who is now amongst a lot of other people who think that is ok. Porter gobbing at the linesman, Miron and Palmer going off on their persecution bs.

Culina has to be regretting coming back to the A-league.

I hate Smeltz, I'm certainly not his number one fan on here as I have never liked him... Shoot me down, but this just makes my day... Typical Smart A*s Aussie. Yes I know hes a kiwi but deep down the Australian in him shows. Even if he gets us to the 2nd round of the World Cup I still won't love the guy.

What I wish someone could ask him is - Were we playing the kind of football to win a GF when we beat him 6-0? And how the f**k does he know what kind of football has required, has he ever won a trophy in his life?

Hey Shane...

If thats not grand final winning football material, then what your team did in the game certainly isn't close to grand final football.

Smeltz is a bit of a knob, but that's not news.

This rant still doesn't compare to his performance when he was transferring from the Nix to GC and flat out lied about what was going on behind the scenes with the Turkish club.

Great link on that article to Gold Coast's sexiest women, well worth a look. Best thing about the whole thing.

That just makes me want to say straight to his face - "f**k off".

Outrageous really, I hate the way it's forgotten Gold Coast needed a win not a draw so even without the penalty the fact they didn't score cost them more than anything.

What a dickhead.

He should be concentrating on his own performance which was, quite frankly, sh*te (x 3 vs Phoenix for the season).

Gee. Wonder if that will causeva bit of disharmony in the All Whites squad? Surely not, they're professionals. I know what I'd like to say to Smeltz if I were Brown, Bertos, Lochhead or Sigmund though.

Smeltz's comment is the sort of thing that should be blown up large and stuck on the wall of the Phoenix dressing room. Perfect motivation if any were needed.

Stupid but, hey, if we are going to start slinging mud about other players' behaviour then I might start with Nix captain Andrew Durante whose on-field discipline at times this season has left a lot to be desired....

Not true.

He was always seemed to be most cocky, unapproachable knob in the Nix squad.
You know we belong together...

I love Smeltz. No I definitely wouldn't drop him vs Mexico.

PS: What are the chances of him getting punished by FFA for those comments about Breeze?

Whats so pathetic?

Not having a go,just wondering.

I think smeltz is right to some extent. But for it to come from him is a bit rich and also rude to say about the club that ignited his career from nothing.

For a start, look at the way the article is written.  It's deliberately inflammatory.

For example...

"I watched the game again and Anderson was booked when he didn't even connect and was on the receiving end of a kick himself," scoffed Smeltz.

"...scoffed Smeltz"?  That's not a quote, that's editorial.

"Smeltz's dissatisfaction with Breeze -- a police prosecutor in his other life -- stems back to his send-off against Central Coast on September 20 for dissent."

How does the writer know his dissatisfaction stems from that? And what on earth is the relevance of what Matthew Breeze does outside football?

If you look back the match thread on here you'll see that opinion was very much divided over whether it was a penalty or not; in fact, the majority probably thought it wasn't, especially on a second look.  But when Smeltz expresses that opinion, suddenly he's a dickhead, a knob and most incredibly, he should be benched against Mexico!  Grow up.  And the idea theres going to be some sort of malice towards him by Brown, Sigmund and Bertos when they get together for the Mexico game is just ludicrous.  These guys have known each other for years; a couple of comments in the press arent even going to register, apart from them giving him a bit of good-natured sh*t about them.

As for the stuff about Smeltz being cocky and unapproachableIm just staggered.  I saw Shane Smeltz pose for more photos and sign more autographs during his time here with the Phoenix and All Whites than just about any other player.  He was always the one people wanted, and I never saw him refuse a request.  Maybe others had a different experience, but thats what I remember.

Ill admit his comments about the Phoenixs style in the very last sentence could probably have been phrased better.  But the character assassination thats gone on here is as I said before pathetic.

Just my view.  Clearly others will disagree.

Nah definetly a fair call. Thats why i asked.  Like i said,i think hes right on the most part.

That last sentence was pretty poor though, and thats what i focused on in my 2 negatives.

LF, of course you are right - the reaction was trigger happy - an over reaction to the perceived slight of the Nix.

I don't think Smeltz helps himself though, some of his comments when going through the transfer saga from the Nix (via Turkey) to GCU weren't too well considered. Strikes me as one of those players who needs a media minder or adviser.

Anyway I suspect we may well end up back at Skilled Park in a couple of weeks - all going well - so we will have another chance to maybe impress him with our style.

I do think he has a point though, we're not going to progress if all we can do is desperate defence.

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

sorry maybe the dickhead call was too strong.

He's been champion for the 'Nix and the All Whites.

But the Gold Coast as a club has been very arrogant, and Smeltz has been doing things there he didn't do when he was at the 'Nix. The eye googles at the linesman, the late or dangerous tackles and frequent complaining...

he's just missing Lochhead's delivery into the box I guess or George to play off

I watched the replay today - for the first 20 minutes we easily had the better of the game. The half time stats had GCU dominating possession but we had a slight edge in territory - in other words we allowed them to play around with the ball in their own half - smart.

Once they went 1-0 down they were always going to pour forward - they had everything to lose. I think it's fair to say we weren't good enough to push them back in the second half but we were good enough to shut them out.

Remember we also had 2 very good chances to go 2-0 up in the second half - on the break, but that's what happens when the losing team has to press forward.

I think we played the tactically smartest (and most committed) game of the season against GCU and reaped the reward.

but does he really have a point? we are the only team they have never won against this season. the only team they haven't scored any goals against.
its a pretty big call from him (or anyone from gcu) to say that the nix aren't worthy of being in finals contention, when they are suggesting they should be minor premiers.
I think its the absolute lack of respect for a team that has outplayed them that annoys me. especially from a guy who is expecting the nix fans to be supporting him at the world cup this year. not only that, but show no respect at all for his national team-mates.

im not saying he has to be warm and fuzzy about the opposition, but surely he should pay respect where it is deserved. and he fails to do that.

It was bloody fantastic defence, and not so desperate either when you watch the replay and see how organised we were, eg, catching them offside 7 times. Whether misquoted or not a barb like that is always going to look like sour grapes.

As for the Breeze stuff, who cares. Breeze is hopeless at one of his jobs at least!

That's unfair. Everyone knows journalists are paragons of virtue who play it straight down the line. Aren't they the second most respected profession after Doctors?

Wrong. I said he's always been a knob, not suddenly.

[QUOTE=Perennial strugglers Liverpoolfan1]As for the stuff about Smeltz being cocky and unapproachableIm just staggered.

Oh come on. Just look at him in this photo looking all cocky and unapproachable. He is practically seething with rage. It's Satan in a baseball cap, on a beach, seething. A group of school children is just out of shot, crying.

The only attitudes from the GCU have been from Palmer and the coach. It has not been from the players.

The comment was for the previous thread regard the problem from day 1. I have already ansewered that.
Culina has made comments and Smeltz has too, but you obviously ignore all the threads regarding ALL the Oz teams. Anything Oz is crap etc.
What you conveniently forget is that if it was not for Oz you you not have a team in this league, plus, half the Nix players are Australian?
