And in a 23 man squad!

GCU have talked up big but do people really think they'll be able to tempt enough players away from their current clubs to make a real mark next season?

Yes.

And I don't mean they'll win it... but I can see them putting a half decent squad together... will be interesting to see and I won't have to go to Suncorp if I wanna see matches either lol

oh smeltzy we love you.

hopefully it is just his agent trying to get a better deal for smeltz at the phoenix i would hate to see him leave but i guess if he did that is football and there is not much you can do about it.

I don't know, the owner is going on about a great squad blah blah blah, why is it that the only name they have released is Vanstratten?  You would think if they already had half a dozen great players signed up (as they claim) they would release a real big name as their first signing, makes me wonder if they are genuine or just trying to put the sh*ts up the other teams and attract fans with high hopes...

From that article:

"Gold Coast coach Miron Bleiberg says he is not really interested in any New Zealand players as they take up one of the five places allowed for foreign players. He says with all due respect to New Zealand if he has to choose between a New Zealander and Brazilian, a Brazilian would come first."

GREAT! We keep Smeltz, Gold Coast can have George. Deal?

We took over an existing licence... we weren't an expansion team (ie: diluting the talent pool lol)

And thats exactly why he's there... to keep them in the news... increase profile... for potential players, fans, sponsors, etc... wouldn't be surprised to see him shifted come kickoff

I never actually thought that Miron was originally intended to be head coach/manager, more a sporting director or some other role that is not too hands on with the team

But if George does play for them they may well punch above their weight in their first dig...

I really think that if Smeltzy goes to GC he'll be making a big mistake. He's already the star of an established club. Should he leave, he'll have to start everything afresh..and really, is it worth it? One is to leave and go play in Europe..then sure, it'll be fun to start from scratch and try and build something important.

But to leave the Nix and go to a sh*tty new team in OZ?? Yeah they have the money but so what? that don't mean anything. Plus everyone will hate them and will give 100% against them.

I just hope that Terry will open his purse coz Smeltzy totally deserves good money for the kind of job he is.
I wonder if he could keep him as our marquee player?

He'd have to try hard to do worse than our one marquee to date, I'd rather see him signed as a marquee than leave - though that's not really the purpose of the marquee slot.

I agree bro. I also understand that the marquee spot should be used to sign either someone extremely good (i.e. awesome brazilians) or someone who will bring more people to the stadium (both cases aren't mutually exclusive). However, Smeltzy is doing both at the moment. He's being scoring heaps - especially last year - and is doing a great job!!
So why not, let's keep him shall we?

Don't stress too much lads (and ladesses)- I know Shane has a very good  relationship verging on the telepathic with Ricki Herbert and there's a lot of mutual respect there. So I think he'll stay.
Shane gives a lot of the credit for turning his career around to Ricki- before the two goals against Wales  last year for the All Whites remember Shane was going nowhere with non-league Halifax Town (not even starting most games and only scored a couple of goals for them). Previously he didn't make it with lowly Milton Keynes Dons either.
Hopefully Shane will realise that staying put with the Phoenix will allow him to establish himself as a player in a supportive environment. He seems to me to be one of those "confidence" players who can go a little adrift without the right coaching support and supportive team environment.
(Think of Charlie Nicholas years ago when he left Celtic for Arsenal or Ian Rush when he left Liverpool for Italy- both nose-dived).
The lure of lucre has often been detrimental to what is actually good for a player's on-field performances.

And what a nose it is too!

Some might argue that the "nose-dive" didn't commence until he signed for a Guest Stint with Sydney Old Limp Dicks in the old NSL...

I think he just wants to be paid what he is worth, and to us, whatever someone else is willing to pay we have to match because that's what he's worth to us.

If we don't re-sign him I would aggressively target Joel Griffiths (who apparenelty contrary to reports hasn't signed a new contract).  Similar type of player

There might lie the problem. Other clubs would be offering so much, that we would almost have to give him marquee status to fit him under the cap, which would then rule us out of getting porter or griffiths on a similar deal.

Tough call.

But how would that work?  They are still under the same cap pressure we are.  We should be able to get him under, other sides all have star players who would be well paid.  Durante will be well paid, probably McKain as well.  Marquee player if necessary.  It would be very disappointing to not have the best kiwi playing for the kiwi club

We're still playing all those players we let go too,so i guess thatd take up a chunk? Or maybe we've paid over and above reasonable wages to bring certain players to a bottom of the table club?
I dont really know how others would fit him,but maybe they have a bit more room under the cap than we do.

GC seem to be offering a whole lot of extras over and above a salary too...

Im just saying if rumours are true, and we have to do it...that would mean choosing between smeltz or the possibility of signing Griffiths or porter.

Surely we would have to match anything others are offering...As smeltz is really the heart n soul of the club. A star Kiwi player in a kiwi team as you say.

If he leaves for reasons above and beyond money then there's nothing we can do with that, his call.  I'd be disappointed as Ricki has rescued from a footballing backwater and had faith in him, but thats his call.

If he leaves and we don't match the amount and length of the contract on offer I'll be very disappointed.

But this is football, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, no-one is bigger than the club (except Ahmed El**ch who was huge).

Marquee and guest players do not come under the cap ........... you can paid whatever you like ...... guest players have a limited number of games they can play its either 4 or 6 games only, ..... but you can have more than one guess player ......... Also a replacement player for a hurt player out is not counted in cap but from this year what you pay the replacement can be no more than what  the player out was getting.  LOL last year we had Brown out who is paid like maybe 50, 000 and replaced him with Aloisi.

I understand all that.  That is not the point I am making.  Smeltz won't be either an injury replacement or a guest. He will be most likely a salary cap player, possibly a marquee although I doubt he'd fit the criteria anywhere other than here.  (although if that Zuma can be a marquee than so can I).

From Newstalk ZB this morning...

The playing future of in-form Wellington Phoenix striker Shane Smletz won't be settled anytime soon.

Smeltz, agent Leo Karis says reports Gold Coast and Adelaide have made offers to Smeltz are rubbish.

Karis says he's had no offer from any A-League club including the Phoenix about a deal to sign Smeltz beyond this season.

Karis says at present, Smeltz is more focussed on football and his family rather than negotiating a new contract.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Fears Wellington Phoenix striker Shane Smeltz will walk out on the club at the end of the A-League season have been eased.

Smeltz comes off contract with the Phoenix at the end of the A-League season and has been linked with a move to both gold Coast and Adelaide United in the past few days.

But Smeltz' agent Leo Karis says those reports are off the mark.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Despite all the rumour and speculation not one A-League club ,including the Wellington Phoenix, has made a contract offer to in-form striker Shane Smeltz for next year.

Smeltz's agent Leo Karis, says recent media reports linking his client with a move to Gold Coast or Adelaide United are rubbish.

Karis says he's yet to receive a single offer for Smeltz, including from his current employer the Wellington Phoenix.

What else would an agent say? "Yes, we were illegally taking offers before Oct 1 and I'll admit it to the media???????" That was always going to be the line from Karis, I don't know what other answer was expected. I have no doubt that Tony P is correct in saying that Shane has had other approaches, he doesn't make it up.

If any player wants to go for the same money, but the difference is private jets and a pretty house on the beach then I'd suggest we wouldn't want him anyway. Not that Smeltz is that sort of person. I hope that if the offer is right from the Nix that he sees he's had it pretty good here, has been in the form of his life and a change could upset all that.

Current Squad (Actual or Potential)

Former Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Bosnich is reportedly being chased by Gold Coast United. Palmer has indicated to his manager Miron Bleiberg to hunt for Chinese talent for his first playing list, targeting current Sheffield United defensive midfielder Sun Jihai as a first signing. [14]. Ex-FC Porto junior and current Melbourne Knights midfielder Cameron Watson is also said have been closely watched by Bleiberg.[15]

Former Brazilian World Cup stars Roberto Carlos and Rivaldo were said to been keen to end their careers with Gold Coast Galaxy. [16]

Gold Coast United's first two signings are ex-Queensland Roar players Scott Higgins and Steve Fitzsimmons.[17]

I'm sure they're not going to get all of those players but those are some big names they are throwing about.
