SHANE Smeltz is set to plunge the Wellington Phoenix into further crisis by walking out on the club.

The Nix - winless after the opening five rounds of the A-League - are desperate to hang-on to their record goalscorer when his contract expires at the end of the season.

But Smeltz - voted New Zealand's player of the year last year ahead of Premier League star Ryan Nelsen and Celtic striker Chris Killen - will instead sign up with the A-League's newest franchise, Gold Coast United.

Sources in Queensland confirmed last night that Smeltz - who will lead the Nix attack in today's game against Sydney in Wellington - is ready to sign a three year deal with Australian team.

Smeltz felt ``insulted'' earlier this season when Nix CEO Tony Pignata was only prepared to offer him a one-year-deal.

''Shane went back to the club and explained that because of his family situation (he has two children) he wanted more secuirty than a one year deal would offer him,'' the Queensland based source said.

''He felt like he had earnt a long term deal after his performances last season.

''It's fair to say he was shocked and insulted when all Wellington could come up with was a solitary season.''

The Nix eventually agreed to offer him a two-year deal worth $300,000.

But by the time Piganta put the offer to Smeltz, Gold Coast officials had swooped with a three-year contract worth $A600,000 with accommodation for him and his family thrown in for free.

Not necessarily,depends if management gets off their butts and can get a good striker as i replacement.I mean a good one not so old hack from z league somewhere.

the article is not 100% clear on what/who the source is "sunday news understands".

and if what is written is true, then Shane has yet to sign anything as it is only at offer stage.

I wonder if Shane/shane's agent has been shopping around in order to get a better deal at the Nix.

We didnt. We have only been speaking to Shane and waiting for him to come back to us to see what he wanted. We gave him time to speak to his family and then go forward. If you read the artilce neither Shane nor I are quoted it is all about "Sunday News reveal" Why is that hey?? Also GC United cant sign anyone unless they go through the rights steps of wrtiing to us and FFA. This has not been done.

Agreed. The only way we will keep him is if he is marquee. $600,000 for Smeltz wouldn't fit into our salary cap. Three year deal as Marquee. Thank you very much.

Also, the article has no quotes from Shane himself. I'm not stressed yet...

However one thing. If we sign him as marquee is there the smallest chance he could be the next El**ch. I think not.

You can't blame him if he does want to sign.
But I think hes loyal, but you can't blame him if he does want to maybe further his career, or at least his financials.
