Agreed. But would rather have soccer written 10 times than rugby written once.
Its no longer a problem.

ffs Herald stop calling it Soccer already
What's in a name, as long as the Australasian media cover it, who cares?

it's not an either/or situation
calling our game "football" does not mean they will have to reduce coverage
sort it out granny Herald!!
- radio sport and the Dom have and from memory TV1 and TV3 usually manage to get it right
fairly simple stuff really

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I was surprised how many people over here use soccer, it's really just an identification thing more than anything rightly or wrongly some people in NZ will always think of rugby when they hear football

Soccer is the new Football.
Fact.
Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Dumb arguement that just turns people off supporting football (soccer). Let them call it what they want and stop being a dickhead about it.

I generally say football to people around here (small country town) then I have to translate when they get confused. If I said soccer from the start they would understand 100%.

I always say football, and if there's a need for clarification, explain with "World Football". Have yet to find anyone still confused after that.

Yeah but surely a media print doesnt apply to the "who cares what they call it as long as theyre talking about it" thing. They should be proffesional and call it what its officially called, anything else is just ignorance.
I agree that people who shoot individual people down when they say "soccer" are out of line,it only serves to discourage them from the sport, even in a small way. On that level is where the "who cares what they call it..." comes in.

Who cares. I played 'soccer' for years, never got my knickers twisted once.
So, in summary- I'm awesome.

I've always thought the whole 'soccer v football' thing was petty and at least a little bit annoying
It's the same bloody game - who cares what people call it?

cause it's not the Wellington Phoenix Soccer Club.
Doesn't help when our own players, eg Ben Sigmund, have called it soccer on 2 separate occasions. I guess he's just appealing to the masses.Oceanic62009-12-24 21:49:33

Only really bothers me when the media do it to be honest. People have called it soccer all their lives, and since most people call it that,i do sometimes even. Same sport.

Football could also be refered to as other sports, but soccer is soccer.

If you say soccer or write soccer everyone knows what your on about, but in certain countries football can meen a different code, over here a lot of aussies call aussie rules football and in the states gridiron also. If you asked a 1000 average people in the street in NZ what the game was called you would probably find most people would say soccer, thats including siggy, I prefer football myself but funily enough my wife asked me last night if i was going to be watching soccer, and no i didn't bother trying to correct her.

Sorry to dredge this up again. I noticed on the Radio Sport website that it's listed as Soccer. Oceanic62010-02-01 16:49:29
