Fred Woodcock's piece in this morning's DomPost is the best thing
I've seen, heard or read in this country so far about the Phoenix.
Granted, it's his job to write about the Phoenix and in
his interests to be positive. But he is doing his job well -
critical when he has to be, but seeing plenty more to be
enthusiastic about.
And this sums up the Phoenix thus far. There are faults but,
overall, it has been a successful beginning that promises much
for the future.
Contrast this to the pap coming out of Auckland. Tony Veitch
said on Thursday night that the Phoenix had failed to live up 'to
all the hype'.
This begs questions.
If he was refering to the on-field performance, then the only
'hype' has come from the likes of him. Ricki has said right
from the start that this season is solely about consolidation,
not top four.
If he was refering to off-field, then any 'hype' has
certainly been lived up to.
I do not consider it an overstatement to say that sport in
this country has never seen anything quite like the Yellow Fever.
We are big, vocal, proud, loyal, colourful and
different.
We are also reshaping the landscape for male behaviour in NZ.
If you'd told me back in June that by December I'd be standing in a
male urinal and singing football songs so loud that the roof was
almost coming off, I'd I've said you need urgent psychiatric
attention followed by deportation.
Merry Xmas to everybody.
